CORNELIS “JOHN” JOHANNES MEYER

03/09/1931 – 12/28/2024

John was born in Amsterdam where he grew up. Upon achieving his Marine Engineer diploma in 1954, he worked in the Netherlands and travelled to many countries on the ships with his work.

He married Maria in 1957 and in 1959 they immigrated to Canada for more opportunities.

After working at several different jobs in Winnipeg, John settled in with the CN Transcona shops where he spent the rest of his working years.

He retired at the age of 60 and enjoyed over 30 years of retirement.

John was an outdoorsman who loved spending time camping, fishing and at the lake. John, Maria and the children spent many summers enjoying the Whiteshell, however, he would pack up the trailer and take many trips to other destinations over the summers. During his retirement, his favorite place to spend time was in the mountains, especially at Castle Mountain (hostel) which was his home away from home. John met many people during this time especially while taking on the role of relief manager and had enjoyed lasting relationships with them.

In the summers, he would hike the mountains and go on overnight hiking trips and in the winter he would downhill ski. He only started skiing at the age of 58, and he learned how to Snowboard at 62. He skied all the way to the age of 85. John and Maria also enjoyed many trips down South in the winter. Arizona was his favorite, but he also enjoyed time in Texas, Virginia, and California.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for all they have done for John over the years. John had heart disease and had 2 bypassess and 14 stents put in over the last 30 years. We often joked that he probably holds the record for the most amount of stents put in and the fact that he had “nine lives”.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Maria; children, Mike, Joanne (Vince), and Carolyn (Craig); and grandchildren Dorian, Rochelle, Shannon, Jessie, Cameron and Catheryn. He also leaves behind eight great grandchildren. Also mourning his loss is his sister Annie; niece Nel; sister in-law Johanna; and nephews, Gerard and Will.

In Accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

John’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
