MONICA MOELLER

(née Hederman)

May 14, 1934 – June 25, 2026

We mourn the loss of Monica Moeller (née Hederman) who died following a stroke, June 25, at Health Sciences Centre.

Monica was born May 14, 1934 in Lough Ine in the vicinity of Baltimore on the South West coast of Ireland. Her parents were Mary and John Hederman, both teachers. Her older siblings were Mary, a nurse with the British Royal Airforce, and Patrick, a Marine Engineer, both deceased.

Monica was educated at private girls schools in Kinsale and Clonakilty. As Ireland was in an economic depression and jobs were scarce, she moved to London where she found a position as inventory controller with a major German optical manufacturer. There she met in 1959 her future husband Fritz, an account executive. They married in 1961 at Church of the Holy Apostle in Pimlico, London and within a month took a company transfer to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where her children Anita and Kieron were born.

In 1968 Monica and her family immigrated to Canada, living first in Toronto for one year and then moving to Port Moody in the Lower Mainland of BC. She took a course in accounting and worked for a while in a clothing store. In 1980 the family moved to Winnipeg. Monica obtained a university degree in Sociology and worked for a while for the University of Manitoba as a researcher.

After his retirement in 1999, Fritz and Monica lived in Guadalajara, Mexico for a short time and then moved back to the Vancouver area before returning to Winnipeg in 2010.

Monica had a lifelong passion for travel and managed to fulfill that dream with the love of her life, Fritz. Monica loved to laugh, enjoyed a good gossip and had a genuine interest in other people. She was never afraid to take a risk. She was a grand, lovely Irish lady.

Monica is survived by her husband of 65 years, Fritz; her children, Anita Moeller (Andrew) and Kieron Moeller (Edvige); as well as her grandchildren, Emily Robinson (Landon), Nicholas Moeller, Nathan Moeller (Kira), Maeve Boardman and Luke Swanson (Danica); and great grandson Casimir Swanson. She is also survived by Paul Hederman, nephew in Ireland, and Monika Sombetzki, sister-in-law in Germany.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the neurosurgery department at the Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care in her final days, as well as her homecare workers for their kindness and support during her last years.

"Your life was a blessing,

your memory a treasure.

You are loved beyond words

and missed beyond measure."
