LANARD MOKELKIE

Lanard Mokelkie peacefully died at Grace Hospice in Winnipeg, Manitoba at age 65. He has been laid to rest at St. Paul’s Cemetery outside of Steinbach, Manitoba beside his brother Daniel.

At the time of his death, he was predeceased by his mother Thelma; father John; and brothers Jimmy and Daniel. His surviving family are brothers Ronald, Lorne (his twin), Melvin, and Anthony; sister Alana; as well as many nephews and nieces.

Lanard was a what I’d call a heavy industry man. He left home to work at many industrial jobs like Dominion Bridge, Domtar, and Building Products. He travelled Canada to work in Alberta on oil rigs, as a power engineer managing various facilitates, had a stay in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, and went east to work in Toronto. He had various certificates in many occupations. He is what I’d call a rambling man; he enjoyed moving all over Canada and had seen much of the country.

Lanard was a real tinkerer; fixing and building things was a great hobby of his. You could find Lanard collecting and tinkering around with anything and everything. He also managed to obtain an Amateur Radio Operator’s certificate and his call sign was VE4JCG. The whole family loved radios from the old days.

I’d like to say Lanard was strong willed man as he beat off death many times in his life. He had a brain tumor in his early 20s which was a very terrible ordeal. However, he survived and went on to have a long life after. He was a strong-willed person and he never gave up, even in the later years while he was struggling.

Lanard did his best to find God in his life, as much as any one can do. He attended Inner-City Aboriginal Fellowship Church on Burrows Avenue where he had some friends one of whom was Pastor Jeremy with the ICYA program.

Your family will miss you, Lanard, and you always be remembered. Always our brother, and we always love you. Rest in peace.
