BERNARD MOOSBAUER

June 20, 1963– May 8, 2023

With heavy hearts, we announce that Bernard Moosbauer passed away last week in Winnipeg, MB. at the age of 59 years.

He is survived by his partner of eight years, Kathy, his mother Liselotte, brother Michael, sister Kathy, brother-in law Gerry, sister-in-law Namhee, along with nieces Shayla, Alliyah, Danica, and nephews Jaehwan and Damien.

Bernard grew up in the neighborhood Windsor Park where he shined in high school volleyball and community football. Throughout his life, he travelled both ends of Canada and eventually Europe either with the military or by doing youth community volunteering through Katimavik. When back in Winnipeg, he loved taking his brother to movies and attending concerts. He enjoyed discussing philosophy for hours with his mother or talking about military history with his father. He loved playing the trumpet where he also excelled in high school bands, the youth cadets, and eventually in his military career.

Bernard’s attraction to the military resulted in joining the Canadian Armed Forces through Minto Armories that progressed to full-time service. He was involved in two military tours; his greatest success was as a Peacekeeper in Croatia. On leave, he visited his entire family in Germany, which was one of many examples about his care and thoughtfulness toward others. Upon retiring from the military with distinction, Bernard attended the University of Manitoba Faculty of Fine Arts. Being already an educated graphic designer and skilled in framing art, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree with honours distinction. He spent the rest of his life devoted to the education on fine art.

The Moosbauer family kindly requests that you take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Cremation has taken place.

Bernard's Funeral will take place at 11am on Friday, June 9, 2023 at St. Bernadette's Parish (820 Cottonwood Road) with a reception and a burial to follow at 1:30pm.

Deepest condolences to the Moosebauer family and friends of Bernard.  I had the privilege of meeting and serving with Bernard in the same platoon in Croatia in 94.  An honourable and dependable brother at arms back then and I can only try to imagine the hole that his absence has created for those that knew him longer and closer. Rest in Peace Bernard.

All my condolences to the family. I met Bernard in Katimavik in 1984. We started the journey 12 youths from all over Canada; by the end of our 9 months commitment, only 5 remained: Bernard from Winnipeg, Laura from Calgary, Roger from Kingston, Brenda from Kamloops and me from Quebec City. Our first rotation was in Carman, Manitoba where we help the school, the library, the senior home and CN Rail. Our second rotation was in Dorset, Ontario, where we both worked for the first Canadian Acid Rain Lab, spending hours canoeing and gathering water samples for scientists from all over the world. Finally, we finished the program in Trois-Rivière helping planning the 350th anniversary  of the city.  I must say that Bernard took me rapidly under his wings, helping me learn English and understanding the specificity of Western Canada. He was proud of his German Heritage, although he was always cooking asian food! He was a great photographer, showing us how to use our cameras better, playing with light or exploring composition. He loved music, any type, jazz, rock, alternative. He introduced me to classical music 🎼 in Trois-Rivière, the group had a chance to get 2 tickets for a classical concert, which he fought to get… and invited me. He was a big brother to me. He came visit once, my family really liked this “young man from Manitoba who is learning French and took good care of their daughter.”  Life being what it is, we lost track of each other. RIP my friend xxxx.

Sending so much love and my condolences to Bernards family. He was one of my very first students when I took my first job as a printmaking professor at UofM. He had such great energy, wit and creativity and was already a skilled screen printer. He actually taught me quite a bit of technical information as he had worked in the industry. He was a fantastic student and added so much to the classes I had him in. We had stayed in contact over the years through social media. Sadly, a good time had went by since I had been in contact with him. I had wondered about him recently. So sad to see that he has passed. I know that he led a wonderful life and made so many laugh. Such great huror and I also enejoyed discussing philosophy with him. Rest in peace my friend, Bernard. You will be missed by so many.

Sending all my love and condolences. I met Bernard when he took my class at UofM and we instantly realized after our first discussion he had served in the Rifles with my father, Larry Blair. He was a brilliant student and in the years after he finished my course, Barnard continued to sent me so much positivity, encouragement and love to help me through my own educational journey. Rest in Peace Barnard, thank you for all your support- it meant more than you know. Also sending condolences from your fellow rifleman Lawrence Blair - who speaks so highly of you. ❤

Bern was always a good man, in an era when it is difficult to find people you can say that about.  I served with him, and knew him as a soldier, musician, and as a person whose interests were always expanding.  He will be missed.

Heartfelt condolences to Kathy and the entire Moosebauer family.  Bernard was a wonderful friend throughout our middle and high school years.  As many have already shared, he was kind beyond words, and we laughed more times than I can remember.  I loved his sense of humour.  May the wonderful memories people have shared about what an outstanding person he was to so many bring you some comfort in the difficult time.

I had the pleasure of serving with Bernard (“Moose” as we affectionately called him) in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles from 1992-1998.  He was the guy who had your back no matter what.  He was kind, friendly, and a consummate professional soldier. I will always look back fondly on the years I served with Bernard Moosbauer.  I am a better person for having known him. Rest in Peace brother.  We’ll take it from here.
