MARGARET CHOWN MORSE

August 28, 1925 - April 19, 2021

Margaret Morse, O.M., died peacefully on April 19, 2021. Margaret was born in Winnipeg on August 28, 1925 and was predeceased by her husband, the Honorable Peter Morse, in 2018. Margaret is survived by children, Brian (Evelyn), Douglas (Sandra Roberts) and Peter McDonald; David (France Morin), Stephen Morse and Ruth (Ronald) Hermann; by grandchildren, Jenna (Phil) Neuendorff; Lauren and Matthew McDonald and Samantha Roberts; Thomas (Virginie Begin), Lawrence (Vickie Sonier) and Catherine Morse; Ashley and Nicole Hermann; by great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Harper, and Weston.

Margaret was a distinguished member of a distinguished family.  She received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Manitoba and completed a Master’s program in Speech Pathology at Kent State, returning to Winnipeg to become the first speech language pathologist in the Province.  Margaret was at the forefront of speech language healthcare for more than 70 years, establishing numerous hospital clinics and working tirelessly to establish a Department of Communicative Services and Disorders at the University of Manitoba until the time of her death.

Margaret was an iconic member of All Saint’s Church, teaching Sunday school, serving in various leadership roles and fund-raising for both the Church and St. John’s College.  She had a passion for community service including Board roles with the St Boniface Research Foundation, the Victoria Hospital Foundation, the R.H. Institute, the Women’s Musical Club, and the Manitoba Historical Society.  In 1958, Margaret joined the Women’s Committee of the Winnipeg Art Gallery and played a lead role in fund-raising for art acquisition and other purposes.  She remained a staunch supporter of the WAG until her death. In 2017, at the age of 92, Margaret established an endowment through the Winnipeg Foundation, in memory of her father, Dr. Gordon Chown, to support medical students, particularly those of indigenous backgrounds.  She had established the Margaret Chown Fund previously to support various community causes.  In 2020 Margaret was awarded the Order of Manitoba in recognition of her contribution to her profession and Manitoba society.  In 2021, she was chosen to receive the Manitoba 150 Women Trailblazer award, further recognizing her contribution to Manitoba.

Margaret inspired and supported many.  She gave to her family, friends, and community continuously and, when faced with challenge, stated simply; “This too shall pass”.

Donations in memory of Margaret may be made to the Winnipeg Foundation, Margaret Chown Fund. A celebration of her rich life will be held once restrictions on travel and gatherings permit. In the meantime, Margaret’s family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by visiting her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. My wife and I offer our sincere condolences to Margaret's family. I (Robin) had the pleasure of chatting with Margaret over a number of years while we were on the same Sidesperson team at All Saints church. She always had a positive outlook and pleasant manner. Robin & Louise Simmons.👍❤

A beautiful service today for an amazing force of nature.  Thank you Peter for the beautiful words you shared, all who attended, All Saints for the lovely setting, program, and music.  Condolences to family, friends, and all who had the good fortune to spend time with Margaret, she was pretty darn awesome.

Loving memories of Margaret as an All Saints parishioner. A warm, loving talented and dedicated woman. Always missed.

Like her mother "Bunty" Chown, Margaret was usually doing good deeds and supporting good causes. She was a great supporter of the City of Winnipeg and a faithful member of All Saints' Church. May she now rest in peace and enjoy her place in the great congregation of the saints. +Eric Bays

Margaret was a life-long member of All Saints Church where I also attend. Margaret was born in our parish in West Broadway, just five minutes walk from the church. She was baptized, confirmed and married in our church and survived (if that is the word...) the incumbency of no fewer than 22 out of 30 rectors that All Saints has had since 1884!  Margaret was beloved in our parish.  In recent years, she has been the keeper of our history and the stalwart representative of the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund.  Margaret was a person of generous vitality.  She had a lively interest in the world around her and willingly devoted many hours to the range of organizations and causes about which she cared.  As things got more difficult after Peter's death, she was a model in how to look for the positive, stay active and carry on.  She will be sorely missed by me personally and all of us at All Saints Church.

While I only met Margaret a handful of times (Peter was my uncle), she has left an impressive legacy. It is inspiring to read about her professional and community contributions, and her commitment to family and cottage life. My condolences to her family and friends as you honour her life during this particularly challenging time.

On behalf of the Department of Communication Disorders in Winnipeg school division, I would like to express our condolences. We as a department and as a profession have much to be grateful to Margaret for; for all of her hard work and dedication to the field of Speech Language Pathology. She set a high standard for our profession and advocated so strongly to establish  a school of speech-language pathology.  You will be missed.

Margaret was my regular weekly customer for 25+ years at the salon.  Throughout that time we developed a wonderful friendship.  Getting to know her and her constantly busy schedule was delightful.  Margaret was genuinely interested in people and made everyone feel comfortable, always kind & positive.  We have lost a good friend and are thankful for all the memories.  Please accept our sincere condolences Peter & all the family.  Love Alphonse & Pat

Margaret Morse was a remarkable lady.  It is such an honour to have known her all of my life, sharing endless visits and phone calls with her.  Remarkably for 5 generations the Alexander’s and the McDonald’s  have been neighbors at Lake of the Woods. My fondest cottage memories are running through the woods to play with Pete, often winning the annual May long weekend who will jump in the lake first challenge, family badminton games between our families, cocktails on her veranda with my parents, and drying oodles of dishes. Still to this day the multi generational family connections are celebrated regularly. Volleyball has replaced the badminton and it is now drinks on the dock but family time together lives on.   Margaret was the island historian and poet and always had a story to share. I always admired Margaret’s amazing gift of welcoming and remembering people of all ages, walks of life and interests into her life.  Watching Margaret receive the well deserved Order Of Manitoba for her endless volunteer hours, community service and strong commitment to her Winnipeg Community gave me much pride and joy.  I miss her stunning smile, her thoughtful phone calls, and words of wisdom. However I know that her passion for life and goodwill  has been passed on to her family near and far. Xo

I have known Margaret for a very long time !  We always stayed in touch . The last time we talked was when I called her to  congratulate her on her O.M. Margaret contributed so much to the community and was a loyal  friend to many.   Deepest sympathy to her family.

I am so sad to hear of Margaret’s death. She was a very dear friend of my sister, Celine Kear, and I met her many times on many trips to Winnipeg. We enjoyed many lunchtime chats- especially at the WAG- and I will miss our phone conversations and exchange of beautiful notecards! She lived a full, wonderful and impressive life- I send my deepest sympathy to her family. Winnipeg will miss her!!

I met Margaret when working with her on a committee to establish a school for speech-language pathologists at the U of M. I was impressed by her hard work and dedication to the cause. I am sorry she has left the world.

I send my sincere sympathies to the family.  I first met Margaret at my parents' (Bert and Dora Luckhurst) cottage.  I was a young adult and Margaret had the funniest story to tell about her car breaking down on the Trans Canada highway with 2 big dogs in the back seat.  I thought she was a hoot! Our paths crossed many many times over the years and it was always a pleasure to chat with her.  She was so very kind to my father, during his last years in the nursing home, visiting him regularly. I am so glad to have had a long telephone call with Margaret last summer after she  received the Order of Manitoba.  She was a person of so many interests and talents.  She will truly be missed by all who knew her.  Laurie Allen

Dear Auntie Margaret, I was very sad to learn today that you had passed away. You were an outstanding Godmother to me. Though we did not always connect as I traveled with my husband to faraway places, when we did , you showed such a keen and generous interest in what my life was about. I will never forget that. I have the fondest memories of spending time years ago at your family cottage, of you up early and diving into the lake. I see you now, in my minds' eye, figure skating  beautifully at the Winter Club. When my mother died so unexpectedly, you showed the warmest concern for my father, my brother, and I. Such kindness. Thank you for encouraging me to always "Dwell in Possibility". My sincere condolences to the family, Shelagh Carter Loewen ❤
