ROBERTA MORTON

(née KIRKUP)

September 11, 1929 – December 6, 2025

With both sadness and love, we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Roberta Kirkup, on December 6, 2025, at the age of 96.

Roberta leaves a proud family to carry forward her spirit: daughters Sharlee (Gerry) and Roxy; grandchildren Michelle (Rob), Crystal, Jules (Alana), Jordan (Bredan), and Charis (Mike); and great-grandchildren Kiefer, Jorja, Hayes, and Conley. She was predeceased by her grandson Michael, who she now joins in peace.

Roberta approached life with resilience, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to self-reliance. She wasn’t one to show emotion easily, but she cared deeply about the success and well-being of her family. Her strength and perseverance are qualities she passed down to each generation.

Roberta grew up in Winnipeg and began working at the age of fifteen. Over the years, she supported herself through positions at Winnipeg Hatworks, King’s Department Store, and the Hudson’s Bay Company. Her independence and work ethic were evident early, shaping the direction of her life.

In 1969, Roberta moved to Vancouver, where she operated a lunch counter for many years. During that time, she met and married Arthur Morton. Together, they managed an apartment complex and enjoyed spending their days off at their trailer in Peaceful Valley Golf and Country Club in Bellingham, Washington. They also took memorable trips to Winnipeg, Mexico, Florida, Hawaii, and the Cayman Islands.

After retiring, Roberta and Art returned to Winnipeg and created many good memories with family and friends. She enjoyed attending dances, going for long walks, working on fill-in and jigsaw puzzles, and visiting the Regent Avenue Casino for bingo and occasional shows. She often enjoyed good times at the casino with daughter Roxy and her niece Sheri. When Art relocated to Victoria to care for his sister, Roberta moved into Bethania Haus, where she continued to value her independence while volunteering at celebrations, resident outings and serving dinners. With her passing we encourage all to remember her by sharing a Coke with family and friends.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Bethania for their kindness, particularly during Roberta’s final years. Most especially, they wish to acknowledge Sharlee, whose steadfast love and advocacy never wavered, even through the most difficult moments. Her commitment ensured Roberta was surrounded by stability, comfort, and the familiarity of someone who never stopped showing up.

Her legacy of resilience, independence, and family will continue for generations.

For the faithful, we offer this Prayer for Peace by St. Francis of Assisi:

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

(Prayer for Peace)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

-Amen

I lived in “Grandma’s” basement for a while when life was kicking me in the shins. She only charged me half the bills as rent, which was generous… until she turned the heat off at night in the middle of winter.

Luckily, I discovered that rent drops dramatically when all you have to do is sleep in a winter coat, snow pants, and a toque on a half-deflated air mattress, directly on a cement floor.☺️

She helped me when I needed it. It taught me resilience, and accidentally trained me for Arctic survival. Forever grateful. May she rest in peace ❤️
