MELANIE (MEL) SASKIA SCOTT MULDER

December 5, 1975 - April 26, 2020

With great sadness we announce the passing of our Melanie, while in the loving embrace of her husband Brian and mother Sharon, on April 26, 2020.

Mel will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by Brian Sparrow and their children Vivien & Louis; mother Sharon (Bill Martin); brothers Jan (Melissa) and Ethan; father Arend-Jan; aunt Gail Paseska; mother and father-in-law Diane and Bob Sparrow; brother-in-law Ben Sparrow (Lisa); nieces and nephews McKenzie, Mae, Lucas, Sophie and Jacob, as well as many, many close friends.

Our Mel grew up on a hobby farm near Marchand, Manitoba. She spent countless childhood hours outdoors with her brothers and friends, playing, exploring and camping in the nearby forest. The farm provided endless adventures and delights for Mel, from the farm’s multitude of animals (horses, goats, chickens, dogs & cats), to learning to drive at age 10, shooting in the forest, and helping with the construction & wiring of the “new” house.  Hours were spent with her brothers Jan & Ethan playing in an old Dodge Power Wagon, which acted as a play structure and ‘babysitter’ when young, eventually progressing to something exciting to drive.

Mel’s bright kind smile, infectious laugh, caring and thoughtful nature formed close and everlasting friendships from childhood to today. Mel attended grade school in La Broquerie, and graduated high school from Ste. Anne Collegiate. She spent her high school years with a close-knit circle of girlfriends, playing basketball, talking, and driving around the countryside, laughing together.

Mel went on to receive a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba (1998) and then began her long and successful career at Standard Aero. During this time Mel’s easy going, reflective nature, and irresistible smile formed even more lifelong friendships. This time was populated by plenty of laughter, fun-food filled bbq’s, camping & beach trips, dancing, long conversations and adventurous car rides (watch those corners Mel) always culminating in a stop for ice cream.

Mel established her first home in Wolseley, sharing it with her Toby cat and then her beloved rescue dog Truman. She filled her home with light and flowers, always welcoming family & friends with a big hug, good food, and a cup of tea in her sunroom. Mel’s adventures continued in her travels with friends to Mexico, ‘Girls Gone Wild’ trip to Spain, Portugal & Amsterdam, and a bike trip through the south of France.

Mel rekindled an old friendship in meeting Brian again, which blossomed fueled by mutual respect & love for family, travel, long walks in the park with their dogs, and a devotion to cooking & eating great food together. Mel & Brian married in June 2011, and together experienced a dream trip to Botswana and Cape Town, South Africa. Mel & Brian built a family together, celebrating the arrival of their beloved children Vivien (2013) and Louis (2016).

More than anything Mel loved being a mother, and their home always rang with the sound of Mel’s wonderful laugh as she played with her children. Mel & Brian spent cherished time surrounded by nature & family at their Little Deer cottage and in annual family trips to Florida. They filled their home with love, cuddles and reading stories to Vivien & Louis.  Time with Brian, her kids, mother Sharon & Bill and mother/father-in-law Diane & Bob, reinforced the foundation and meaning of family for Mel.

Mel worked at Standard Aero for 20 years and during that time she made an extraordinary impact on so many. She provided thoughtful guidance, mentorship, established technical collaboration with Red River College & the U of M, and through it all celebrated & promoted women in leadership.

Family and friends were extremely important to Mel, she surrounded herself with love and gave of herself freely, never forgetting a birthday, and always reaching out with a visit, a yoga class or a shared meal. Mel’s everlasting smile will continue to shine on us.

During the 2 years of treatment post diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer, a threat to young women, Mel received incredible support from her large group of friends, staff and friends at Standard Aero, her ‘Breasties’ and Metastatic Breast Cancer Support groups. Thank you to everyone for the love and support! Her family also thanks the staff at CancerCare, Palliative Care, Riverview Health Centre and the two transport drivers (Manitoba Stretcher Services) who provided such special care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s memory can be made to the Melanie Mulder Bursary for Women in Engineering or to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be announced later when we are able to come together as family & friends.

My heart is broken to hear this news, and my heart goes out to Mel’s family. Sincerest and saddest of condolences for the loss of Mel, taken too soon. My daughter became best friends with Vivien at preschool (Bambini) and we were so happy when they ended up at the same school together. Such a lovely family, and I feel so blessed that Mel spent some of her fighting days with us. Special memories will always stay with me - of us walking from her home to get ice cream and play with the girls in the local park; taking the girls to see Elsa and Anna when the ice castle was here, watching the girls ride ponies at another friends birthday party. The kids are welcome at our home anytime at all and I hope we can be of support in some way. With deepest sympathies, The Barlow with extra special love from Amber and Melody.

I am deeply saddened at the news of Mel's passing. I had the privilige of knowing her at Standard Aero from the day she and Sonia (Ivans) first started up to the day that I retired. She was a warm hearted, capable and commited young lady then who blossomed into such an inspiring manager. I returned to work at StandardAero some years after retirement and for this period of my life Mel was my boss. She was the perfect boss as far as I am concerned; simply gave direction, clearly stated requirements and then stepped away. She never uttered a negative word in all the time that I knew her and earned the deepest respect from me and those who worked with her. She was one of those people who enriched lives simply by her presence and she will, I am sure, be missed yet fondly remembered.  Since moving to PEI, Mel has been in my thoughts often. My condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace Mel!

I feel priveleged to have met Mel through the friendship of our daughters. As we sat together on park benches and at birthday parties, we soon realized we had growing up in rural Manitoba in common, and of course as a result, knew the same people. In the brief time that I knew Mel, I was drawn to her calm, kind, and strong character. I see these same qualities in Vivien. It is no wonder why my daughter cares for her so much. With all of our hearts, we send our love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mel when we were in UofM Engineering school, this blond Amazon that stood tall in both stature and strength. I remember how she and Sonia would study in 229 and the hours upon hours we would spend there. I also had the pleasure of working with Mel through a large portion of my career at StandardAero.  I remember her wide pure smile, her grounded sense of calm and clarity through all kinds of situations and her hard work ethic. My deepest sympathies to Mel’s family especially her children as they grow without their mom but with an undoubtably wonderful foundation which she passed onto them. Rest well Mel, you will be missed and always remembered.

The passing of such a wonderful, inspirational and loving person is truly sad. Mel had a heart of gold and displayed it every day, whether with friends, with family or at work. She will be missed dearly in our minds and thoughts. Mel brought such joy to those around her and everyone who knew her would attest to the same, as shown by the tributes below. Brian, Vivian and Louis, your wife/mom will always shine on you and watch over you from above. It was such a pleasure to know Mel and share laughs, tears and so many wonderful moments with her throughout the years. We carry you within our hearts.

It is an injustice that someone as strong, noble, and selfless as Mel has left us at such a young age. I lucked out by being at Standard Aero at the right time to meet Mel and join her group of friends from U of M engineering. We had countless amazing times together. I concur with another comment here - Mel never said anything bad about anyone. She was a special person. I loved the photo tribute. Photos are such a meaningful way to remember someone we cherished.

Sharon and Bill and family.  I am truly sorry for the loss of your daughter, Melanie.  My deepest condolences to you and your family and her children and husband.  Although I didn't know Melanie, the loving obituary written for her gave me the sense of what a special and caring person she was. I  am glad you had the time that you did with her and many wonderful memories of her, especially all of the time at Little Deer.  I am heartbroken for you however, that she was taken much too soon.

I worked with Mel for about 10 years at Standard Aero up till 2014.  I was brokenhearted to hear of her illness and now once again upon this news.  Mel was always calm, sincere, and kind.  I remember sharing dreams and stories of the cottage.  I am a better person because I was fortunate enough to be blessed by the presence of Mel in my life.  My condolences to her family as they deal with the loss of their love.

Sharon, Bill, Brian, Vivien and Louis, My condolences to all of you at this time of terrible loss. I never met Mel but know Sharon and Bill. I was struck by how much Mel and Sharon look alike but mostly the smile she shares with her mom and with everyone she knows especially her husband and children. Let that smile linger in your memories as it speaks to her love and to how lovely she was. Condolences to all who have lost a great person, wife, mother, daughter, co-worker and friend. Debra Dusome

Mel was a true friend when I moved to Canada in grade 3. She never spoke an unkind word in our 37 year friendship. Such amazing memories of being with her family in Marchand, as simple as stoking the woodstove in their kitchen. Later in Dufresne, running in the snow to the hot tub. Working together in math class, then dancing in the bars, turning heads as tall blonds enter. In the last few years walking our dogs together in the Kingston Row neighborhood. Mel you touched many lives. Your spirit, looks and personality will live on in Vivien and Louis. My deepest condolences to them, Brian, Sharon & Bill, your brothers Jan and Ethan and your dad Jan. I will never forget our friendship and your smile Mel. ❤

I knew Mel from our time together in engineering at U of M. I will always remember her for her kind nature and huge, quick smile. She was friends with everyone (truly), but especially Sonya ❤.  I hadn't seen Mel for years but I'm not at all surprised to read comments from her colleagues and hear that she turned out to be an excellent engineer and manager. She was simply a lovely person. With love and sympathy to her family and friends, Jane Comeault

My sincere condolences to Melanie's family and friends.  Melanie started at StandardAero about the same time that I started at Manitoba Aerospace.  Melanie and I worked together on several events/activities to showcase aerospace and engineering as career opportunities for young women.  Melanie was a pleasure to work with and I will remember her wonderful personality and generosity and willingness to share her time and expertise.   She is missed.

Melanie was my boss for a number of years at Standard Aero. She left early 2018 to get treated for her breast cancer and I left late 2018 to get treated for my breast cancer. She and I got together sometime in December 2018 for coffee and “compared notes” regarding our treatments. From the neuropathy on our fingers and toes to fatigue to how our appetites even bigger than before, I was glad to have someone that could relate to what I was going through. She talked about going for walks and doing yoga and meeting up with ladies that are going through treatments as well, and I talked about sleeping a lot.  On my way home that day I remember asking myself “How does this woman find the energy to still be active?!” I was absolutely astonished and impressed that Melanie did not let her treatments slow her down. I came back to work July 2019 expecting to see her walking around in the shop, but sadly that was not the case. She was very professional but approachable. She was friendly, nice and had such a warm smile. She was very thoughtful. A Melanie staple was the Christmas cards she would give out to her group every year. Those Christmas cards did not have generic messages, they were personalized and I looked forward to them every year. Melanie will be missed by her work family. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, especially to her two little ones.

Melanie was a pillar of strength all the way through her fight with this horrible disease and was saddened by the news of her passing. I've worked with Melanie for over 20 years at Standard Aero but closely in the last 5 where I was lucky enough to work for her directly. She was a kind, selfless person and one of those rare people that could lead confidently, yet quietly and trusted people to do their job. She was passionate about Engineering is an inspiration to everybody that worked with her. Her smile, laugh and positive attitude (about everything) was infectious and is the thing about her that I'll miss the most. She always took the high road and wouldn't say a bad thing about anybody or anything. She was just that person we should all aspire to be. It's likely Mel never knew the impact she's had on people's lives, including mine.  I'll think of her fondly when I pass her photo at the entrance of our office every day. She will always be in our hearts. My sincerest condolences to her friends, family and colleagues.

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person, inside and out. I had the pleasure of working alongside Mel at StandardAero for the last 10 years. She was a well-respected leader who always looked at ways to support and develop her employees.  She was passionate about engineering improvements and new technologies and a strong supporter of getting more women into engineering and leadership.  She also always liked to instill fun and wellness opportunities in the workplace and I enjoyed co-chairing the company’s wellness and recreation committee with her. I will remember her for her infectious laugh and smile, her fun sense of humor and her ability to stay positive, through thick and thin. My condolences go out to the Sparrow/Mulder family, her large group of friends and colleagues during this difficult time.  She will be deeply missed. Stacey Barrette

I worked with Mel for many years at StandardAero, getting to know her very well as co-trainers in a mentorship program and then as direct co-workers shortly thereafter. In all the time I knew Mel, I never heard her speak negatively about anyone or anything; always seeing the best in things. Mel truly was a good person, and was loved and respected by all us who were fortunate enough to have known her.

We only met Mel a few times over the years, but her vivacious spirit, wide smile and spirited laughter were unmistakable. She showed great courage in her long fight with this terrible disease, and such strength and persistence in being such a loving mom and partner. Our loving thoughts are with you, Brian, Viv and Louis, Sharon and Bill, Diane and Bob, and all the family, friends and co-workers Mel loved in her too-brief but brightly-shining life. It was shocking to hear of Mel's passing.  I worked indirectly with her at Standard Aero in Winnipeg.  I was transferred to the US many years ago, and haven't seen her since.  Mel's warm and inviting smile resonated with me.  She was always very helpful and ready to answer any of my Engineering questions.  She was very bright, hard-working, and skilled in her Engineering role. I was very saddened to hear the news of Mel's passing. I am honored to have known Mel from her early Standard Aero days, remembering when she started with the support office that worked with our cell at that time. Mel frequently visited the area that I worked in and we shared many fine conversations concerning work & life over those years. Many years have passed since I have seen Mel, but I always remembered her. I will never forget her smile, it was brighter than sunshine. Condolences to family and friends during this difficult time. What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person. I never knew Melanie for long, but the glimpse I got of her as a mother to Vivien, through a few conversations, the exchange of a few emails, student conferences, and when she attended Vivien's kindergarten field trip,  her love for Vivien was very evident and beautiful. Her smile was infectious and I see it in Vivien's wonderful smile as well. My heart is with all who loved Melanie! I hope all of the wonderful memories she made with all of you will help you through these difficult times. And to Vivien, I send you the biggest hug possible.

Mel was such an incredible warrior, fiercely brave but also full of grace. I wanted to tell you about a conversation we have after she received the devastating news that there was no more treatment options for her.  They were moving the hospital bed in. She mentioned they were going to tell the kids.   I asked her how she was coping.  Her answer to me was that she picks a theme every year for her bullet journal and this year’s theme was love and that love was her answer to everything. ❤
