DARRELL JACK WATSON NICHOLSON

October 11, 1993 - June 16, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce the tragic passing of our treasured son, Darrell Jack Watson Nicholson, June 16, 2021, at 27 years old.

He was our beautiful surprise child born at 11:01 p.m. on October 11, 1993. He was our beautiful baby. He was the kind of little guy who could go to the playground and make all new best friends of the day. He was such a little people person. He adored and was adored by his wonderful big sister, Carly, who made "boats, trains and automobiles" out of cardboard boxes so they could travel the world together. On a weekend home alone, the two of them painted his room a bright orange with checkerboard table tops. He was so proud of that. He loved kayaking, trick-biking, snowboarding and skateboarding. Just Monday, he caught a 28" catfish while fishing with his friend, Juan.

Heartbreakingly, he descended into the world of drugs and addictions in his teen years. While he rallied a few times, in the end, it took his life.

He had just started working at Riverbend Movers last fall making a new start. According to his boss, he moved quickly from being a "swamper" to a dependable lead driver. He seemed to have matured and settled into his new life. He was happy to have a good job, a good work family, and he appreciated his supervisors and boss.

He was so kind and compassionate to those souls who were down on their luck, giving them coffee and a sandwich. He had been where they were.

He was honoured to be asked to be a ring bearer at his sister and brother-in-law's wedding. He took his job very seriously. He was so pleased to have been with his family in that wonderful moment of joy and happiness.

He made many mistakes in his life but one thing was sure - he loved his Dad, Mom, sister and brother-in-law, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He leaves to mourn his passing, parents, Lloyd and Shirley; sister and brother-in-law, Carly and Dan; beloved dog, Bandit, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins, Tyler, Sara, Ali and JB, John and Micaela, Laura and Adam, Karen and Adam, Tom and Tara.

Addictions of all kinds are cunning and baffling diseases. Darrell was more than that. In memory of Darrell, who fought so hard to overcome his, donations to the Bruce Oake Foundation, 210 Recovery Centre or the Behavioural Health Foundation so others may find hope and sobriety, are appreciated.

Thank you to the Winnipeg Police Service for their work and service every day, especially days like this.

Darrell’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

With restrictions, there will only be immediate family members at a service.

Many thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers at this time.

What a tragedy. The loss of your beloved son and brother. It sounded like he tried many times to become sober. Drugs are away of coping for so many. That coping then becomes addicted to coping mechanisms. It is powerful addiction that unfortunately can be had from anyone and not always safe. So very so for your loss.

There's only a handful of people that impact your life in positive ways, who help shape who you are as a person and make you appreciate them for allowing you to be a part of their lives. I'll miss you buddy

Darrell came to us for a time.  To teach us how to live & understand people with his personality & foibles, to learn himself how to be in addictions & the struggles in this life he had to learn, to be a part of our lives for reasons know only to his soul. When He loved, he loved deeply & with all his heart.  He cared so much for all beings, whether it was fresh little ducklings or stray frozen cats, or someone slumped in the street where others stepped over them.   Darrell loved us all.  He never meant to hurt.  He meant to live.  He had plans.  He had dreams and goals just like us. He fought the demons within long and hard.  He was a burst of light into our lives and we'll always cherish his memory.

the most amazing tribute , the story tells the love and the pain. I never got to know Darrel , I do know the Parents. My heart goes out to the family .  I also lost a son (accidentally).  I can mostly relate. I do know the hopes and dreams family had for Darrel and his future moving forward for all good things for him .  In this time of grief and moving forward my message is ,  to all , keep in mind this a not just period of grief  for the family …. It’s a complete life altering situation , imagine your life as you once knew it , is over. Life moving forward from that day is totally different , they all have to find a new way of living each day. Let me tell you all. Please don’t forget and stay in touch with them.  We all need someone to talk to , share , cry , they need your support , take a moment out of your day and reach out !  Let’s all be kind to everyone and make a difference in this life , Someone needs you.!

I am a family friend of Darrell’s and watched him grow up to be a very special young man with a heart of gold. When his grandfather passed away I went to the service to pay my respects however did not know most of the people who attended. I was feeling out of place when along comes Darrell with his beautiful smile and wonderful personality to keep me company for the rest of the service. A thoughtfulness I will remember always.   My condolences and prayers go out to the family especially his Mom, Dad and sister   Remember him in your hearts forever.
