JOHN "NICK" WILLIAM NICOL

December 30, 1940 - April 17, 2025

Nick was born on December 30, 1940, in St. John's, Newfoundland, and was a proud Newfie. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Anne; his parents, Rex and Kathleen; his stepmother, Joyce; his brothers, Bob and Charlie; and his sisters, Janet, Mary, and Eileen. Left to cherish his memory are his sister Jane; his children, Tod (Heidi), Joanna (Bill), Chad (Anna); and his grandchildren, Sabina, Nicholas, Brendan, and Olivia.

Nick embarked on a remarkable journey, joining the Canadian Air Force immediately after high school. While stationed in Saint John, New Brunswick, he met and married Anne. Together, they built a family and a life full of adventures, with postings that took them to Marville, France; Trenton, Ontario; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Gander, Newfoundland, and then back to Winnipeg for good. Nick took great pride in his work with the Search and Rescue Team in Gander during his Air Force career. After retiring from the CAF, he continued his professional journey at Hudson’s Bay Distribution Centre and later with Rol-Way Services, managing deliveries until his retirement in 2008. Throughout his working years, Nick valued the camaraderie of his work teams and fondly remembered the friendships he built.

Nick loved nothing more than summers spent camping and canoeing with his family. A passionate hockey enthusiast, he played in his younger days and spent countless hours coaching. He admired Bobby Orr and was a devoted Winnipeg Jets fan, holding season tickets for years and celebrating the Jets return to Winnipeg. Nick also loved golfing and could often be found playing a round at Blumberg or the base golf course and relished friendly competitions with his sons. His love of sports extended to organizing and participating in a seniors' bowling league for many years. A computer whiz, Nick enjoyed online golf games with friends from all over.

Nick and Anne embraced retirement with travels to Palm Springs and Nick enjoyed memorable visits to Newfoundland to reconnect with his family. Above all, Nick treasured time with his children and grandchildren. He had an extraordinary gift for storytelling, endearing himself to everyone willing to lend an ear.

In recent years, Nick resided at Rosewood Assisted Living and, later, Golden West Centennial Lodge, where he spent his final days. Despite the challenges of Alzheimer’s, his feisty spirit endured to the end. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Rosewood, especially Mary Lou who was always so kind and caring, and the caring team at Golden West.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nick’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba. The family invites you to view a collection of photos celebrating Nick’s life and share your own memories and stories in the comment section.

As a fellow Jets season ticket holder during the 1980s, I sat next to him in the upper deck of the Winnipeg Arena for years, where I always enjoyed listening to his stories. My condolences to the family.
