COLIN DOUGLAS McMORRIN NICOLSON

With broken hearts, we mourn the sudden and unexpected passing of Colin Douglas McMorrin Nicolson. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin & friend. Colin was born on August 17, 1962, the youngest child of Mae and Gordon Nicolson, three months after his father’s passing. He was also predeceased by his mother Mae and in-laws, John & Ethel Blues.

Colin leaves to mourn his loving wife Wendy (Blues); sons John (Erin, Emmett) and Zachary; and daughter Tia (Gary). He is also survived by his siblings, Cameron (Wanda), Gordon, Bruce (Alix), Kathy (Vince), Richard, Barbara (Rob), John (Adele), Elizabeth (Barny), Stewart (Shona) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Colin attended Lord Roberts Elementary and Churchill High School. After graduation, Colin enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and served six years as an Airborne Signaler with 2 PPCLI. After returning to civilian life, he obtained his CGA designation. He worked for Sill, Streuber, Fiske & Co., and then the Duck Mountain school division. He returned to Winnipeg in 1997 to work for the University of Manitoba for 21 years, until his recent retirement in September 2018.

Colin was never quiet. He was always singing, whistling or talking. Music played a big part in his life. He never missed a chance to sing, whether it was at 7 am with Operetta wake up calls or singing pussy cat songs throughout the day. He starting singing with school and church choirs as a child which led to performing at the Hollow Mug Dinner Theatre.  As he got older, he was in a band with some high school friends. As an adult, he performed with the Manitoba Opera, and never missed a chance to sing karaoke. Every year on his birthday his request was for a karaoke night with Tia and Zach. He also participated in an annual family Christmas carolling group with Elizabeth, Stewart, Wendy and Zach.

Colin was very involved with the community and coached hockey and soccer teams when the children were young. He was the singing Santa Claus for Riverview Community Centre and other organizations as requested. Colin loved to cook at all family gatherings and this carried over into preparing the breakfast for the annual Riverview 4 x 4 hockey tournament for many years, always cooking up many “McNic’s”. This passion for cooking has been passed on to his son Zachary.

He loved sports of any kind, especially those on TV, where he controlled the remote. He was an avid golfer and has passed on this love to John and Tia. Over the years, he played broomball, bowled, curled and fished. He loved the social aspect of sports. He loved poker and played in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas with his friend Cheynne for two years and was thrilled to make it to the second day last year. There were many nights of canasta, rummoli, poker or other games with family and friends, including his 30 year long weekly card game with his “besties” Cheynne and Ken.

Colin loved to travel. In the last year alone, he travelled to Nova Scotia, took the whole family to Scotland, went to Alberta, Las Vegas and spent the last three and half months on his dream retirement trip golfing in Arizona with Wendy. He travelled to many exotic places with his work and while he was in the army.

​

Colin was not afraid to take the unpopular side of an issue and had many spirited debates with friends, family and co-workers. He didn’t worry about what other people thought and was especially supportive of the recent legalization of marijuana. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ready smile. They broke the mold with Colin. Gooooo Bengals!

A Celebration of Colin’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Riverview Community Centre, located at 90 Ashland Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Riverview Community Centre.
