ALLAN NIELSEN

June 1, 1932 - November 12, 2022

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of Allan Nielsen on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at his home, Oakview Place.

He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his loving wife and best friend Inger of 67 years; his children, Ann (Bob), Karin (Duane), and Glenn; grandchildren, Christian, Nicole (Peter), Kurtis (Amanda), Derek, Amy, and Alena; great-grandchildren, Emily-Ann and Colton.

Dad was born on June 1, 1932 in Odder, Denmark to proud parents, Peter and Gerda Nielsen. He was the oldest of three children. Big brother to sister Ruth and brother Mogens.

Dad was a jack of all trades. In his younger years he worked on bicycle repairs and woodworking with his father.

His formal education was as a printer (Typesetter) until he was called up to the army where he always told us he was a “medic”. His all-time favourite show was M*A*S*H* which always brought a tear to his eye.

Dad’s mom was the matchmaker. Our mom worked with our Farmor and when they got to know each other, Farmor decided that Dad needed to ask Mom out on a date. It’s been 70 years now since that first date!!

Mom and Dad were married in Denmark on September 17, 1955 and then immigrated to Canada in 1957 and have made Winnipeg Manitoba their home ever since.

The only family they knew here were Vern and Ulla Steffensen. Dad and Ulla were first cousins. As time passed, they became part of the Scandinavian Club where they formed many long-lasting friendships, that to us, their children ended up being our Danish Family in Canada, our “Aunts & Uncles”.

Dad’s very first job in Canada was at “The Lance” and from there he embarked upon opening his own print shop with partner Warren Hanks. Spartan Printing was a very successful print shop that over the years won many awards.

There are three of us kids; Ann, Karin, and Glenn. 1968 is when our cottage at Twin Lakes Beaches was built and it’s almost done!! This was by far Dad’s favourite place. We have many fond family memories such as:

  • The homemade plywood wakeboard

  • Skiing behind the red tin boat

  • Beach bonfires

  • Jumping off Dad’s shoulders when we went swimming while at the same time he was washing his socks that he still had on his feet!!

  • His infamous BBQ’d rib roasts were delicious!!

The legacy continues to live on as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren enjoy the “beach”, our little piece of heaven.  Dad was a very skilled woodworker. He built the cottage, with the help of many friends, built some furniture, and enjoyed all aspects of woodworking.

Mom and Dad ensured we knew our family in Denmark with many trips there as children. We will forever be grateful for that. One of our fondest family road trips we took was a three-week adventure to Disneyland in Dad’s beloved wood-grain Station wagon.

Dad was a blood donor for many many years and took great pride in his contributions to that.

This summer we were able to get Mom and Dad out to the cottage for what proved to be a fantastic day. They stayed out late enough to be able to enjoy what would be Dad’s last incredible Twin Lakes Beach Sunset.

Thanks to all the staff at Oakview Place for always making Dad feel at “home”.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of Allan's life will take place at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent.

We miss and love you, Dad. May you rest in peace!!

I'll never forget the great times that were spent with Allan. Times like Christmas or the time we had a big storm at twin lakes and his cottage was getting flooded. He didn't want to leave and kept saying a captain goes down with his ship? He'll be missed!

Our sincere condolences to tante Inger, Ann,  Karin, Glenn and their families. A whole lifetime of memories, much too long to list. I'm pretty sure it was Uncle AL  at the helm of Ann and I having to be home at 10:00 p.m. I'm glad I got to share that last day at the lake. Rest in peace  Uncle AL. Todd, Dylan and Jo-Anne

Our sincere condolences to Tante Inger, Ann,Karin, Glenn and Families.  What a lovely tribute.  Sure brought back a lot of memories of all the times our families spent together, whether it was Christmas, Easter, all the camping and the great times at Twin Beaches.  Sharing all the Danish traditions as a "family".  So many wonderful memories. Love from Alice, Rob and family.

While sharing your loss, I think of what a great friend Allan was to my late husband, Arthur.  Allan was always willing to help with building anything that needed to be  built  or repaired. He was skilled at carpentry as well as printing. Allan and Inger came from Denmark bringing with them some enjoyable Danish traditions that were highlights in our social life. Thank you Allan and Inger and sympathy for your loss.

To all of you, Tante Inger, Ann, Karin, Glenn and all your families.  You have our deepest sympathies on the loss of your husband, dad, morfar, farfar.  I'll always remember Allan as a fun-loving, enjoyable person to be around when we children. He provided fodder for a lot of laughter and good times.  He loved being with people and people loved being with him.  Please accept our deepest sympathies and condolences on the loss of Onkel Allan.  I hope he’s playing some cards and raising a glass with his buddies, the other Dansk-Canadisk Vikings again.  Sincerely, Jan and Kris

Tante Inger, Ann, Karin, Glenn and everyone in the family I am so sorry for your loss.  As one of the numerous Danish cousins in this huge extended family, I have memories as far back as humanly possible, and for what I can't remember I can see in old photos of all the times we were at the beach as babies or at the airport in a huge cluster to welcome visitors from "the old country" with all the tantes onkels and cousins, or just at dinner get togethers.  He will be remembered always, love from Susan

Thinking of the Nielsen family as they celebrate and honor the life of their father.  Katherine and I share many fond memories of Mr. Nielsen (and the entire Nielsen clan!).  He was a kind, jovial and generous man and will be missed by all. All our love, Michael & Katherine
