Inger Nielsen
INGER NIELSEN
February 19, 1934 - March 21, 2023
We are very sad to announce the sudden passing of Inger Elisabeth Nielsen on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the Grace Hospital.
Inger was very much loved and will be greatly missed by her loving family; children, Ann (Bob), Karin (Duane) and Glenn; grandchildren, Christian, Nicole (Peter), Kurtis (Amanda), Derek, Amy and Alena; and great-grandchildren, Emily-Ann and Colton. Mom was predeceased by her husband Allan and sister Grete.
Mom was born on February 19, 1934, in Oldrup, Denmark, to proud parents, Christian and Gerda Kaltoft. She was a sister to Kalle, Grete, and Erik.
Mom grew up in Odder and in her early adult life worked in retail and helped others in their homes.
In her late teens, Mom met Dad at a dance. Dad’s mom, our Farmor, was the one who suggested that Dad look out for Inger Kaltoft at this particular dance. The rest, as they say, is history.
They were married on September 17, 1955, and immigrated to Canada in 1957. Dad was the first to arrive, sending for Mom a few months later. Winnipeg has been their home ever since.
Mom and Dad’s first home was an apartment on St. Mary’s Road. Mom spoke no English but met a very kind woman, Shirley, who took Mom under her wing and taught Mom word by word how to speak English.
The first job that Mom had was as a caretaker of this small apartment block that they lived in. She later worked at Jostens and when Ann had school photos done, because of this job, Mom came home with oodles of pictures of her beautiful first-born. We are sure that we will find some of these photos!
Mom also helped out at Spartan Printing when needed. She was also a banquet server with Ann at the Down’s Hotel for a time, but her most important job was at home, being a great wife to Allan and Mom to her three kids.
In 1968 Mom and Dad embarked on the building of our cottage at Twin Lakes Beach. Mom was there supporting Dad every step of the way. She made sure everyone was fed and the kids were looked after.

Our cottage was where Mom earned her name, “The Dragon Lady”, because she won just about every game she played. Just recently she beat Ann and Glenn at Crib, her legacy will live on.
Mom loved cards and all the games she played at the lake. We would often find her in a card game with Tante Ulla, Tante Ruth and Tante Inger. It was here at the lake that “Big John”” taught Mom how to play Cribbage.
Mom also very much enjoyed playing bingo and hitting up the VLT’s at the casino. She was known at Oakview as one of the top bingo winners and had many prizes to show for it. She was very proud of all her winnings!
Mom was also part of a bridge club that started when Glenn was born, in 1970. She made many good friends and enjoyed great times with those ladies.
Mom loved being a Mormor, Farmor and Oldemor. She helped us out a lot when our kids were young, babysitting whenever we needed her. Right up until her last days, one of her first questions was, “how are the kids doing?”
Recently we were able to get Mom to the lake, which proved to be her last visit, along with a stop in at the casino. Her last birthday was celebrated with her whole family, good friend Sonja, and her favourite Chinese Food.
Her very last outing was to McDonald’s, where she enjoyed chicken nuggets, fries, and chocolate milk with Ann!
We miss you like crazy Mom, but we know you are at peace and with Dad again. Love you to the moon and back…
