CARTER NUGENT

December 10, 1962 – June 17, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Carter passed away on Thursday June 17, 2021, in the Grace General Hospital, at the age of 58.

Carter is survived by his wife of 18 ½ years, Deidre; stepdaughter Stephanie; brother Clare (Anne) and their children Mariah and Eric; as well as his many friends.

Carter, spending more than half his life working as a pressman, managed quite an array of hobbies and interests. Whatever he set his mind to, he did it fully.  Numerous motorcycles throughout the years offered him the freedom of the open road.  He was adventuresome with his cooking skills.  He often harvested the bounty of his gardening talents.  Home renovations and maintenance brought out his creativity as a handyman.  Years ago, his freezer was stocked with an abundance of game from hunting conquests.  He enjoyed socializing and slurping a barley sandwich at the community Fort Rouge Legion.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal services held. Carter’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

He is gone

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived

You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind,

be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want:

smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I am very sad to read this.  I am also sad to say that Carter and I had a falling out when we were young adults and I never saw him after that.  I prefer to think of the good times when we were kids in Scouts and the short time we lived together.  Funny how you can be very good friends for a time and then never keep in touch.  Carter and I won the 47th St. Alban's, Jim Spencer Award together in 1977 and it still hangs, with Carter's name on it in my office to this day. It was for the top Scout in the troop that year, and thus it was a tie. Please share this with Clare and say hi for me, would love to touch base with him too.  He and my brother we best friends when they were young.  Jim Legh

I grew up with Carter in riverview we went to Ashland, Riverview and Churchill together. We often hung out at each others houses. His mom always had a beautifully decorated cake on of her hobbies.  I remember Clair and Carter playing thier musical instruments for the whole school at Ashland. It is sad to learn that he passed. My condolences to you and the families. Adam Hastings.

Carter was a very down to earth kind-hearted, generous gentle soul who wasn’t afraid to let you know what his opinions were. He always seemed to treat Deidre with dignity and respect. A great couple!  He will be missed!❤ Geoff Danyluk

Our hearts break for you Deidre, Carter will be missed. We have so many great memories. If you needed help with anything, big or small Carter was your man, day or night he was there...He even rescued us off the highway one night when our motorhome died. We shared many laughs on the patio with Carter and Deidre drinking Margaritas and beer. In earlier years when we worked at Data Mark,  after our midnight shifts Carter and I would would go cruising on our bikes for hours and stop somewhere down the road for breakfast. I can still see him in his tube, floating down the Rat river, a beer in one hand and a smoke in the other, not a care in the world, he was the most laid back tuber of the group. When ever we were to meet up some place we always said if you get there first save us seat. I'm really gonna miss you Buddy, save us a seat. Gone too soon ...Randy & Dollie

So sorry to hear of this news.  Carter and I were school chums and would hang around together evenings and weekends.  In high school (Churchill) we would often get a case of beer on the weekends and sneak it into Kenny Shinkel's basement and hoist a few.   Good times!  Lost track of each other after graduation tho.  😔

Carter will be remembered as a loving, kind and helpful person. He was an extremely hard worker but he always made time for fun. Sharing a laugh with Carter would make your day. It was also nice to have a conversation with him as it was always enlightening. It was great to visit with Deidre and Carter and to share in their love for each other and life. Heaven could always use another carpenter and  handyman. We love you, Carter. ❤

Like my mom said, “he was like a son”, Carter was also like a brother to me.  Helpful, poking fun, insightful. He had a tough veneer but was a real softy at heart. Onwards and upwards… “In fact death is not such a terrible thing. It is quite a Holy Occasion. We accept the Will of God and surrender to it. When death comes we just dive through it like when a wave comes on the shore.”  ~Maharishi

My heart breaks for you Deidre and your whole family.  I always appreciated the help he gave us when Kiah moved to her house.  Carter helped lug in heavy furniture and set it up.  And then you brought food and gifts when the baby was born.   Kiah often mentions this fond memory. I remember Carter as a generous, quiet man, but with a fun side.  I hope you feel the comfort of family friends and the Creator.  Rest in peace Carter. Susan

❤As Carter's mother in law, he was like a son to me. Always helping when I needed it, fixing things, taxiing me to the doctor...   taking me to cottage.  I can't believe he's gone, I'll miss him dearly. ❤
