A Photo Biography Video is forthcoming.

Please check back soon.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ernest Nyiro on October 2, 2026, at the age of 89.

Ernie was predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa Dorothy Nyiro; his mother, Rozalia Nyiro; and his father, Ernest Nyiro.

Ernie was born in Budapest, Hungary, on December 11, 1936. He will be lovingly remembered for the life he shared with his family and friends, and for the many memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.

Ernie and his mother made the difficult decision to leave their lives in Hungary behind during The Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Ernie immigrated to Canada first with his cousin Joe (Dojie) and his family who also settled in Winnipeg. They were followed a few years later by his Mother Rosallia and Aunt Eori mama. Ernie often talked about Dojie as a mentor who promised to look after him and always fulfilled that promise.

Throughout his life, Ernie generously shared stories of his childhood and early years in Hungary, as well as the challenges and triumphs of establishing a new life in Canada. His stories offered a glimpse into a remarkable journey filled with courage, perseverance, and hope.

Ernie and Terry were married in 1960 and made their home in Transcona, where they spent the remainder of their life together. Ernie worked as an electrician with CN, while Terry enjoyed a fulfilling 45-year career at St. Amant Centre before her retirement.

Some of Ernie and Terry's happiest times were spent hosting family and friends for special occasions at their home as well as fun filled weekends and summer vacations at their Big Whiteshell Lake cottage.

Ernie leaves behind to mourn his passing his children, Rick (Elaine), Dave (Barb), and Lisa (Tim), as well as 10 beloved grandchildren and 8 precious great-grandchildren. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

Over the 5 years after Terry’s passing Ernie lived at Devonshire House. Our family would like to thank the residents and staff who offered him friendship and support.

Though Ernie is no longer with us, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. The love he gave, the stories he shared, the moments enjoyed together, and the memories he created will be cherished always.

In Lieu of flowers please send donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.

Rest in peace, Ernie.

You will be deeply missed

and lovingly remembered.

Sorry for your loss. Ernie and my husband , Gary Greening, were friends from the railway and visited together after retirement. Ernie used to call me after my husband passed to make sure that I was doing okay.
