Suzanne Oates

SUZANNE (SUE) OATES
July 30, 1954 – December 22, 2025
Suzanne (Sue) Oates, age 71, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Sue had a lifelong love of science, mathematics, culture, and music, interests that shaped both her professional path and her intellectual and emotional depth. She was a beloved mother and Nanna, known for her kindness, warmth, compassion, quirky sense of humour, and intelligence. Sue held her family close, especially her daughter, Allyson (Jeff), and her cherished granddaughter, Peyton.
Sue earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from Queen’s University. She dedicated her career to public service in the federal government’s financial sector, where she was respected for her integrity, insight, and steady judgment. A mentor to many, Sue was a kind and gentle leader, guiding others with patience, encouragement, and quiet strength.
Outside of work, Sue loved music, singing, and travel, always curious about the world and the people in it.
She is predeceased by her parents, Joanne and Colin Oates, and her sister, Deborah. She is survived by her sister, Louisa (David), and her nephew Rob and niece Claire. Sue will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and colleagues.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on January 16 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent, where family and friends were invited to celebrate Sue’s life. For those who were unable to attend, or who wish to revisit the service, a recording is available on this page.
In honour of her love of animals, donations may be made to the Humane Society in lieu of flowers.
Sue will be deeply missed
and lovingly remembered.

Allyson, l'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I have great memories of Sue as a colleague at Canadian Heritage. She was a pleasure to work with and I remember her humor and all the lunches I had with her. She was so proud of you and your accomplishments. May her memory bring some comfort to you and your family in these hard times.

I remember all of the Oates sisters, including Suzie. All of the Oates girls came to Camp Oconto where I was a camper, eventually I became the Director, and kept in touch via Alumnae events. Suzie was always involved, smiling and fun. A huge loss for all of you With warm hugs, Lisa

While the tributes will be pouring in for Sue, it adds another dimension to her life altogether to realize that she accomplished it all - successfully and lovingly rearing her daughter Ally, being the iconic dedicated and skilled public servant - as a single parent with life-long health challenges. Even throughout the exhaustion of her past few years of surgeries and therapies, she found the strength to volunteer her business skills to Catholic Charities.. Her life has been a model of resilience, optimism, generosity and selflessness. .......she inherited the best from both parents - her mother's musical talent and her father's business acumen. It was a great source of pride and joy to them. May she join them, along with dear sister Debbie, in that heavenly, peaceful realm.
Heartfelt Sympathy to her beloved Ally, Jeff, and Peyton.

Ally, Peyton and Jeff, you were the stars in Sue's life. She loved you so much and was incredibly proud of you. I was privileged to have had Sue in my life and am missing her. Sue's sense of humour, her interest in others, her intelligence and sense of fun were always evident. Sue's lovely soprano voice, and beautiful smile at our December caroling were gifts to her friends. What a treasured afternoon.
My deepest sympathy to you Ally, Jeff and Peyton.

Sue was a dear friend. She had a love of life and a wonderful sense of humour. When asked, she gave me wise, compassionate advice. Our favourite trip together was to southern Africa where she loved seeing the lions, elephants, giraffe and other animals. It was her unfufilled dream to take her granddaughter there one day. I miss her greatly.
