MARJORIE (MARJ) ELIZABETH OLSHEVSKI

(née MOFFAT)

November 21, 1939 - March 10, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the family of Marjorie (Marj) Elizabeth Olshevski (née Moffat) announces her passing on March 10, 2025, surrounded by her children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Greata and Thomas Allen Moffat, and her sister, Marilyn Fisher. Marjorie will be lovingly remembered by her children, Teresa Olshevski (Enrique Ruiz), Jodi Tellier, and Derek Olshevski (Cari), as well as her cherished grandchildren, Casey, Sloan, Cailin, and Allen.

Marj was born on November 21, 1939, in Brandon, Manitoba. She grew up and attended school in Hartney, Manitoba. After graduating, Marj moved to Brandon and worked for the Children’s Aide Society. She then moved to Calgary, where she worked and met her future husband, Victor Olshevski. After spending time in Grand Forks, North Dakota, they settled in St. Norbert, Manitoba where they raised their family.

A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Marj dedicated her life to her family. She would never miss an opportunity to celebrate her children's and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Marj attended all of their dance recitals, ball games, or school activities—she loved every moment and was incredibly proud of them.

Marj also cherished gathering with family and friends. She was always ‘game’ for anything, bringing joy with her laugher and love of singing and dancing.

She had a deep passion for gardening and eagerly anticipated each spring, when she could plant and care for her flowers and plants. She found joy in sharing the fruits of her labor with family, friends, and neighbors.

For 21 years, Marj served as the Admissions and Awards Officer at the University of Winnipeg, where she was deeply respected and loved by both students and staff.

Always ready to help those in need, Marj was a pillar of strength and support to all who knew her. Her gentle spirit, kindness, and generosity touched many lives, and she was cherished by so many.

She also had a love for travel. Yearly trips to visit family in Calgary, Idaho, Hartney and Cass Lake were among her summer highlights. She traveled to Scotland, Ireland, and England with her dear friend Dorothy of 67 years, as well as to Belarus with Derek's and family, Australia, and to Florida on special mother-daughter trips.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and friends who lovingly cared for Marj during her time in care.

Rest in peace, Mom. You are loved, and we miss you every day.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Marj’s life at a service at Trinity United Church on March 22, 2025, at 6:30 PM.

Please come with some stories to share with those attending after the ceremony. Let’s relive some special moments together.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society (10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4G2), CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of your choice.

I am very sad to hear of Marj's passing. She was there to solve problems for our students in the Kinesiology department at the University of Winnipeg. I always appreciated her smile and determination to make things right. I am sure she has left and is very proud of the lasting legacy she has charged with continuing the good works. My prayers are with you.

Dear Teresa, Jodi and Derek, I am so sorry about the loss of your beautiful Mom. Although I only had the pleasure of meeting her a few times during the summers in MN, her lovely smile and kind, caring conversations will not be forgotten. Blessings to you and your families, Joan (married to Mark - Joey & Ron’s nephew)

I remember my first day in Admissions I was welcomed by Marj with her beautiful smile. She was beautiful in every way and students and staff truly loved her. With her caring came a wonderful sense of humour. So many good memories of a co-worker and friend.

Marj and I worked together at UofW and I remember such a kind, generous human being. I still remember a students car broke down on Spence street the student could not afford to get the car towed, so there went Marj with her CAA card claiming the young lady was one of her children so she could get their car towed home. her kindness went far and wide. so sorry to hear she's gone, she truly was one of the good ones.

Marj was easily one of the kindest people I have ever met. I had the pleasure of working with her in the Admissions office for many years. She went above and beyond for the students and staff. My deepest condolences to her family. She will be missed. I often say we sure could use another Marj in the office.

Marjorie and her sister Marilyn were two great girls, and two of only a couple of babysitters I ever had. This picture depicts Marjorie looking so much like her mom in her last years. Allen and Greata, and Marilyn and Marjorie were wonderful people. My sympathy to her family. My dad and Allen were always great friends.

My sincere condolences to Marj's family. I got to know Marj at Trinity many years ago when we both were involved with Sunday School. Marj was a friendly lovely woman. Cherish your memories,
