CHARLOTTE EVELYN OLSON

April 25, 1931 – May 7, 2021

Peacefully, on May 7, 2021 at the Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, we said goodbye to our loving mother, grandmother and good friend.

Charlotte is survived by her sister Dorothea; children, Barry (Sonya), Kim (Matt), Edwin (Deborah), and Dwayne (Jeanette); as well as her ten grandchildren, Erik, Olivia, Georgia Mae, Ella, Tyler,  Annika, Lauren, Charli, Austin, and Cheyenne. Charlotte is predeceased by her husband Gordon;  brother Donny; and parents, Arthur and Helena.

Charlotte was born and raised in the tiny hamlet of Marchwell, Saskatchewan. Her family operated the general store just across the border in Harrowby, Manitoba where the kids would work part time while attending school. After high school, Charlotte worked at the hospital in Russell, Manitoba before moving to Winnipeg where she started her career as a bank teller. She worked for several years with the TD Bank on Portage Avenue. It was during this time when she met her husband Gordon. Charlotte and Gordon were married in 1961 and together they raised a family, established Fort Garry Refrigeration & Air Conditioning and were active members of their community.

Charlotte loved to draw. The notepad by the phone was her sketchbook. In her younger days she displayed her creative talents making posters for the store, promoting community events for her father’s Big Band. Charlotte enjoyed gardening and caring for her tomato plants, canning and pickling. She always looked forward to hosting her bridge club and getting out with her curling group. Mostly, Mom loved people. She was upbeat and welcoming and she always made time for a chat or a cup a tea. Her home was her happy place. The Fort Garry bungalow buzzed with activity and was host to many gatherings with family and friends. Charlotte was a genuine friend to many and will be missed, especially by her close neighbours and dear friends of over 60 years, Elaine Dale and Lorraine Roth.

She was patient, kind, and generous to a fault. Charlotte always put the interests of those around her ahead of herself. She devoted hours of her time to accommodate the busy schedules of her four active children and she never turned down the opportunity to spend time with her beloved grandchildren. Quite simply, Mom was the glue that held it all together.

At the age of 88 Charlotte moved to Riverview Health Centre. Her friendly disposition and warm smile did not go unnoticed and allowed her to make new friends there. Mom celebrated her 90th birthday at Riverview last month. Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Riverview for their care during her stay and for their comfort and compassion during her final days.

A family service will be held at a later date. In the meantime, Charlotte’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

If there ever comes a day

When we can’t be together,

Keep me in your heart,

I’ll stay there forever

My condolences to your family, especially Kim whom we met at Riverview my mom is Adele who was on the same floor as your mom.  Your mom did have a wonderful sense of humor right up until the end.  She always welcomed me when I walked in the door as if I was visiting her home.  She would also come into mom's room with her business jacket and ask if everything was alright as she was in charge of the area and wanted to make sure everything was okay.  From the sounds of what her biography that sounds like the Charlotte I met.  Pre  Covid days  her and mom sat at the same table for meals and I would help her and my mom, we had many chats and laugh.  May peace and love in memories always surround you.      Heather Scott

Your mom was a wonderful person.  I recall the day she arrived at Riverview and so enjoyed sitting and having a chat with her in the days and weeks that followed - pre COVID.  My mom, Carol, is also a resident at Riverview and I know she felt comfortable and content when sitting with Charlotte.  My sincere condolences to you on the loss of your mom.

On seeing this sad news my instant memory was of Uncle Gordon and Auntie Charlotte’s beautiful framed wedding picture at Grandma Olson’s house. I always thought she was more beautiful than a movie star and Uncle Gordon was so handsome too. Our visits as families were very infrequent but you are all in our hearts.

To all of Charlotte's children, your Mom was a beautiful woman. She influenced me at an early age. She not only blessed your lives, she blessed mine. I will never forget. To Barry, I will never forget how much you loved your Mom. To Kim, you were blessed with great brothers. Keep them close. My memories of us as kids having sleepovers and the Japan trip are forever imbedded in my memory. Much 💘to you. Peace be with all of you.

Charlotte was my daughter Sonya’s mother in law. Far from being the mother in law of jokes, Charlotte was immediately accepting of Barry ‘s choice and Sonya’s family. The comments written about Charlotte’s personality are so tue. She was beautiful, gave unwavering love to her family, and hospitality to all. I know Barry well and the other family members slightly. But I see in all of them adults who learned the value of good citizenship and family solidarity. Gordon and Charlotte did well.

I remember being at their wedding at the Viscount Gort and  I was 10 years old. I had never been to a wedding or seen anything so elegant and fairytale magical as Auntie Charlotte as a bride!  She was very beautiful and so caring and sweet natured , it was always a pleasure to see her at family affairs. Will miss her so.
