Susan O'Meara
SUSAN DIANE O'MEARA
(née ETHERINGTON)
December 20, 1948 - December 18, 2018
Peacefully, surrounded by her family, Susan passed away, after a struggle with cancer, on December 18, 2018, just before her 70th birthday.
Susan is survived by her husband Patrick; two daughters Alison O’Meara and Kathleen O’Meara; grandson Dominic O’Meara; mother Joyce Etherington; sister Marylyn Jenkins (Paul); brother Bill Etherington; and nieces Christine and Toni. She was predeceased by her father William Etherington.
Susan was born on December 20, 1948 in Stratford, Ontario to proud parents William and Joyce Etherington. The oldest of three Children, Sue has been described as bright, curious, kind, loving, and, at times, feisty. These characteristics would continue to define her throughout her many roles and experiences in her life. Her mother lovingly recalls Sue as being “very fast” as a child, “often running whenever she got the chance, showing through as an example of Sue’s free loving spirit.
Susan attended high-school in Stratford Central Secondary School, achieving excellent grades. In her grade 11 yearbook, Susan’s quote was “Keep smiling, it makes everyone wonder what you’re up to”.
Susan went on to attend Guelph University where she achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She met her husband, Patrick O’Meara on a blind date through friends while they were both attending Guelph. Pat’s first words to her were in admiration of her apartment when he asked; “Nice place, how much is the rent?”, to which Sue replied “$60”. Pat joking response was “When are you movin’?”. Susan’s sense of humour and fun-loving spirit shined as she broke into laughter.
Susan had a beautiful smile and laugh to match. She and Pat went on to become partners for 6 years before marrying on March 17, 1978. Susan gave birth to her older daughter, Alison on May 16, 1979 in Kingston Ontario. Four years later, on October 14, 1983 Kathleen was born in Kitchener, Ontario. Sue was a dedicated, loving, and very patient mother. Sue was devoted to her family by providing a loving home and strived to ensure that her children had all of their needs met in every way. Sue nurtured their individualism and free-thinking, and she continued to be loving and supportive to them throughout their entire lives. Sue and Pat were devoted to each other, in love, and best friends for forty-six years.
In 1985 Sue and Pat moved to Manitoba to start a successful business in the Swine industry. Sue was a full participating partner in this business. Sue and Pat retired in 2006.
Sue had a great love for animals and all living things, especially birds. She ensured the bird feeders were well stocked for the many birds that flocked to them. Sue would often sit reading in the sunroom observing their behaviours. You would often hear her laughing at their competitive antics and social interactions. She was particularly concerned in the winter about the wellbeing and the increasing population of the chickadees. The chickadees had a luxurious heated bird bath that Sue always made sure was full of clean, fresh water each day, and always plenty of food for them. This love for all beings extended to the bees. Sue would plant and grow flowers specific to the bees liking. Sue took great care of all animals in her life including cats, dogs and lizards.
Sue had a passion for gardening and had a “green thumb”. Sue spent time and put special care in to researching each plant and was particular in her selection, preferring plants and shrubs native to Manitoba so they would thrive in their environment and location. Sue would often be seen caring for her many flower beds, vegetable gardens, and great number of house plants.
Sue was known as a humanitarian, and was appalled by the suffering, deaths, and refugee status of the victims of war. She had a great interest in learning about and understanding world affairs and politics, an interest shared by Pat. They would have many discussions about this subject matter and would provide each other with articles of interest, they would read and share each other’s views, which occasionally lead to lively but healthy debates together. This shared passion for discussions and debates was a strength in their marriage.
Susan was an avid reader all her life. She read a variety of topics to satisfy her own curiosity and desire to learn, as well as for pleasure including mystery and detective novels. She believed in being a life-long learner.
Sue was loved by anyone who knew her for her genuine kindness, care, love and concern for those who came into her life. This extended to her grandson, Dominic, who she spent a great deal of time with and loved dearly.
Sue will be greatly missed by her husband, daughters, grandson, mother and siblings.
Donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital , Cancer Care Manitoba, and/or Darcy’s Arc. Flowers are gratefully declined
A celebration of Susan’s life will held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).
