UWE PAUL WILLI OSTERWALD

April 14, 1955 – January 24, 2022

It is with profound sadness we announce that Uwe passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his family, following a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer.

He will be lovingly missed by his mother Inge; brother Ralph; sister Karen; nephew Erik; good  friend Gordon; many friends & cottage neighbours, as well as numerous relatives in Germany. Uwe was predeceased by his dad Paul in 2004.

Uwe was born in Reutlingen, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1956 with his parents. They settled in Winnipeg, where Uwe lived all of his life.

Uwe graduated with a degree in Computer Science at the University of Manitoba in the days when they used “boxes upon boxes of punch cards”!  Uwe was always the family “go to” person when a computer broke down or malfunctioned.  A number of years ago Uwe’s computer skills and patience were put a true test-  when he announced “he was  going to teach Mom how to use the computer!”   (Now this may be a coincidence – but that’s  when the grey hair started). But -  persevered he did!  Mom now knows how to use a computer and tablet with amazing proficiency.

Uwe was the oldest of 3 siblings and first to buy a car.  Uwe & Ralph sure learned a LOT about cars and car repairs from Dad in the days when you could open the hood and ‘still fix your own car’.

Uwe enjoyed a variety of career interest including: microcomputer software development; computer programing; teaching outdoor adventure skills, as well as, volunteer mentor helping those with limited computer skills. His hobbies included sport cars;  photography; calligraphy; model railroading; robotics; computers;  oil painting; camping; canoeing, and many outdoor recreational activities.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre and Victoria General Hospital oncology departments for their deep level of commitment, caring and compassion shown to Uwe over the years.

In lieu of flowers, consideration of a donation to either Cancer Care Manitoba or Siloam Mission (Winnipeg) would be appreciated.

A private service and interment will be held at a later date.

We miss you Uwe - Rest in Peace

Dear osterwald family,        I am so sorry for your loss of dear Uwe. I facebooked with him for a couple of years till Oct. Of 2021. I knew of the hard battle he was fighting and our communication  stopped for personal reason... I just today found out of his passing...Uwe was so fond of your summer cottage in gimli and I loved hearing the enthusiasm in his words...I will miss him dearly!!! I once loved him and was in and out of his life,  for 6 years...in 1988 he travelled to chapleau Ontario with my son Mathieu and I ...he had a good heart,  as my sister was killed in a car accident and he did not hesitate to take us to the funeral. A memory stayed in my mind...( my father took us for a ride in his argo (an all terrain vehicle that drives on land and in the water and Uwe was thrilled) Well I hope this year that he bumped into my dad and they reminisced about that ride over a cup of tea...I will never forget you Uwe💜💜💜

Uwe and I were both enrolled in Computer Science at the U of M in 1974. In our APL class an assignment was to write a program that would duplicate Dr. John Conway's "Game of Life". I wasn't able to complete the task and submit a working program. Uwe, on the other hand, not only met the objective, his program was a single line! My jaw dropped and it was quite some time before I picked it up again. :-)

Please accept my condolences in the passing of Uwe, whom I knew through a group he attended. He always had something valuable to contribute to the group and sent well wishes to myself and other members each year afterwards, which were always a great pleasure to read and was very thoughtful of him. I am glad to have known him and will miss him! Thanks for sharing the lovely photo tribute as well!

Uwe was a great friend. A rarity of caring, sincerity, and eagerness to listen and discuss our mutual interest in computers and electronics. He got the ball rolling for me in the use and programming of microcontrollers when he insisted I get a particular beginner's book and when I didn't, he got me a copy of it. Well, things changed after that moment and we began a mutual endeavour to figure the complicated devices out. Later, when illness prevented us from verbal communication, he did some research and found a way he could send/receive texts to his computer. His sincerity and interest only grew at that point and he was always eager to hear what was new in my projects. I will miss that very much and I will miss Uwe very much. He will always be an irreplaceable friend. Soldier on, Uwe. Your friend forever, Gord Hanks.

Dear Tante Inge, Karen and Ralph I was saddened to hear of Uwe’s passing. I fondly remember the good times we had as kids growing up. In particular, when the Hoff family would visit your family and us kids would enjoy slot car racing and railroad modelling. I will also cherish the memories we made at Camp Neustadt as our two families spent many many summers together. Our deepest sympathies to Karen, Ralph and Tante Inge for your loss and our prayers and thoughts are with you all. Mike and Tana Hoff

Dear Inge, Ralph and Karen I am so sorry for your loss.  For the years I lived next door Uwe was always the handsome, a little mysterious, older brother - just like the  movies.  I know he has been a faithful son and brother.  The movie is a beautiful tribute.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.  Kristel
