RICHARD WILLIAM PALUK

July 17, 1950 - July 3, 2022

Hello dear family and friends. It is with heavy hearts that we must say farewell to our brother, uncle, and dear friend Ric.

Ric grew up in Fort Garry with parents Bill and Peggy, sister Joan and brother, Michael. He attended Crane School, Viscount Alexander, and Vincent Massey Collegiate.

From the time he was able to talk, he loved to sing. So much so, that our mother had to make some rules: 1) No singing at the dinner table, and 2) No singing after bedtime.

Ric spent a lot of time as youth involved in programs at the Downtown Winnipeg YMCA, including completing the Red Cross swimming safety program and gymnastics. His involvement with the ‘Y’ led him to the YMCA Camps Branch. Ric worked at both Camp Manitou and Camp Stephens in summers during high school. His experiences with family camping growing up and later camping and canoeing at Lake of the Woods instilled an enduring love of the wilderness. The lasting friendships from the ‘Y’ and later Camp Stephens remained dear to his heart for the rest of his life. Ric shared many of these experiences with his good friend, Greg, born just a week apart from Ric and always like another brother to him.

At age 16, Ric took up playing the guitar and his musical journey began as a folk duo with his high school friend, Doug. They played together as simply, “Doug & Ric” and  made a name for themselves with their perfect harmony, playing at church coffee houses every almost every weekend in Grades 11 and 12.

Ric later attended the University of Manitoba and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. During his University years, he continued playing music with his friends Bob, Kris, Lenny, Tom, and briefly Dan, as “Second Tyme”.

After Graduation, Ric went to work for Pitney Bowes and worked his way up the corporate ladder until he decided to pursue his musical passion and he set out as a solo artist, singing and playing his guitar for many years in lounges throughout western Canada.

After several years on the road, Ric returned to Winnipeg with his career largely focused on real estate, as a realtor and later as a property assessor. He also broadened his experiences by working at times in the family business, Queen Anne Upholstering & Furniture Company, and with Stage Lite Entertainment.

Ric continued to play music with his friends, including Bob, Kris , Lenny and Ryan in a band called “Disraeli Freeway” and later he formed  “Echo Park”, with his brother-in-law, Bob, friends Gerry and Brent, and his beloved nephew, Brian. When nephew Brian left Winnipeg to pursue his career in BC, he was replaced, of course, with Ric’s good friend Bob on drums once again.

Ric helped instill a love of music and the outdoors in his other beloved nephew, Michael, who played piano in the studio with Ric. They also enjoyed exploring Fort Whyte Alive and other trails together.

Ric’s most recent musical endeavour was a duo with his friend and work colleague, Patrick, playing a tribute to Canadian singer-songwriters as “Canadian Express”.

Ric recently retired from the Province of Manitoba where he worked for the Assessment Branch. He played his final concert with Canadian Express on the bandstand in front of Winnipeg Beach on Saturday evening, July 2nd. His friends, Bob, Tony and Dan joined him and Patrick to round out the sound for the event. Ric passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home the next morning.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered at a location he named and loved. Also, in accordance with Ric’s wishes, there will be no formal service; however, an informal get together will be held for family and friends on September 14, 2022 at 2:30 p.m.. Location: The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg.

We know from speaking with so many of you since his passing that Ric’s presence and his fabulous vocals will be missed and remembered well by so many people who crossed paths with him. Halleluiah!

Rick’s passing is hard for me to fathom. I’ve known Rick my whole life. He was truly one of the nicest and best people I have known. Such a level head and beautiful person. A heart and voice of an angel. I visited him in Selkirk last year when visiting in Winnipeg. Such a pleasure catching up over a lovely meal. I was planning on visiting him again next year on my way through Winnipeg. I will miss that. I will miss him. The world has lost one of the best. My condolences to Mike, Joan, family and friends.  ❤Larry

Still have a heavy heart whenever I think of Ric no longer being with us, he was my colleague, & sometimes mentor, since I started 5 years ago or so, and very well-liked and respected. I always told him he was secretly my "favorite"... I unfortunately could not attend Ric's final concert at Winnipeg Beach but I had seen him & Patrick the year before at Winnipeg Beach, and enjoyed their music  immensely (even though the acoustics were not up to Ric & Pat's standards that year!). My condolences to his beloved family, bandmates and friends.

As with Renee below, I also attended Ric's final concert at Winnipeg Beach on July 2. I had seen the band several years before also at Winnipeg Beach and enjoyed their renditions of the Canadian Folk classics and was excited to see them once again on July 2.  My condolences to the family, bandmates and friends of Richard.

Ric and I met working at Manitoba Hydro’s Missi Falls project in 1975. We became roommates when we returned to Winnipeg. Although I moved east for work and then later west for recreation, we remained friends and reconnected regularly.      I am still in shock at his sudden passing and was looking forward to his visit to Vancouver Island this month. I visit “Canadian Express” on YouTube to watch Ric perform his favorite songs and recommend this to others who loved his voice and his music. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I didn't know Ric personally but I was at the Winnipeg Beach concert on July 2nd & thought it was great & that Ric was an excellent musician. I also work at Riverview Health Centre Foundation & Echo Park has been doing 3rd party fundraisers for us since 2018 - the musicians have been donating their earnings from an annual concert at the Park Theatre. I didn't realize at the time I went to the Wpg Beach concert that Ric was one of the founders of the band. I was quite shocked to hear that Ric passed away the morning after that terrific concert. I wish his family & friends the best & comfort in their memories.

So long amigo. You were my best man and best friend since we first met at U of M in 1970, and although I moved to the west coast in the late 70’s we kept in touch with reciprocal visits, texts, and by phone. We shared our highs and lows and musical endeavours over the years and I’ll continue to miss your advice, consul, and love.  Sing now with the angels my friend, and know that you were loved and respected by all that came to know you.  Don.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ric's passing. My husband David met Ric in 1984, shortly after having moved to Winnipeg- a friendship that endured until David's passing 3 years ago. Ric was part of many, many get togethers and celebrations in our circle of friends and family. My nephews loved it when brought over his cat for a visit. When David passed, he kept in touch calling to find out how I was doing, chatting and reminiscing. He was truly a kind and gentle soul. My heartfelt condolences to his family - Joan, Michael, his beloved nephews. He will be missed. Silvia Visintin-Kennedy

It was an honour and privilege for me, to do sound for you and your band, here in Winnipeg Beach.  Great talent, and memories, whether it be a duo, or full band.  You will be missed.

Ric and I go way back, we started kindergarten together in Ft Garry. We went to U of W together and sought our fortune working pipeline during the summer break. We lost contact, but reconnected several years ago. I will always cherish the fond memories of our adventures during childhood, then University and heading west to work on the pipeline. And, I regret that he left us far too soon, with me owing him lunch. He picked up the last tab at Beaurivage and I committed to returning the favour at at Roxi's in Selkirk. Rest in Peace Ric.

Rick old friend, when I first met you at our first band practice, my first thought was. "Wow, I need to play with this guy" and Doug Kris and Bob too. Your voice was incredible. Smooth rich and powerful.  You've given me over 50 years of fond memories and stories that I can pass onto others.  It was such a pleasure listening to your voice and making such good music with you.  I enjoyed every second of it.  You where not only my friend, you where everyone's friend.  We are all going to miss you. Heartfelt condolences to the family. Lenny & Karen

It’s taken me a while to come to grips with Ric’s passing. I began my musical journey with Ric in 1971 and through to our final show at Winnipeg Beach. Our journey was more than musical. From the beginning he took me under his wing; he was my big brother.  I learned about life from Ric. His openness, thoughtfulness and honesty.  I love him; I miss him. He has left a hole in my life and my heart. He was a great talent. I always said some people hit the notes; others sing them. I will forever hear Ric singing.  Bob L.

The world has felt a whole lot emptier these past few weeks and I certainly know why. I was always most honoured to be asked by Ric to share the stage and aside from being a truly wonderful musician, Ric was just a beautiful guy, humble, salt of the earth and I will always be most grateful for having known him as part of my life.

A kind, caring and gentle soul with the voice of an angel.  I enjoyed talking with you at concerts and family dinners and events Ric.  You made me laugh and smile and had a unique way of giving people your absolute time and attention when talking …..such a gift.  So many years listening to you as part of Echo Park…..what a voice…..I could have listened to you for hours.  Bob and Joan, Mike and the rest of the family I know your hearts are heavy as Ric moves to the next chapter.  Thinking of you all.❤❤❤

A gentleman, gifted, keen perception, sociable, likeable, caring, giving - all the traits of one of the most decent people I known and loved.  You have no idea how much I miss you my dear and good friend.  Our time together as musical buddies will always be cherished.  Peace bro.

Just before Covid a group of old Fort Garry classmates met up at the Park Theater and heard Rick and the Canadian Express,  and started making  plans to follow his music and book him in the future.  Too little too late! Just loved him and his voice. Sing on!!

Ric was an amazing talent. A voice silenced too soon. Always my first choice when I wanted to hear a Lightfoot tune, with Lightfoot a distant second...Deepest condolences to the family for the loss of a wonderful man.

Going to miss you uncle Ric.  Your singing on River Of No Return is my favourite and will always be a cherished memory. Thank you for the many years of enjoyment growing up at the studio listening to you and my dad play and the thoughtful gifts at Christmas time.

Ric just had the best vibe- a presence that just made you feel good when he was around. Given the opportunity one could just listen to him sing forever—which I’m certain he is doing now. Thank you for your rendition of Desperado - we will miss your smiling face.
