BARBARA "BARBE" ANN PARKE

1964-2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Parke on December 9, 2024.

Barbe, as she liked to be called, was born on April 13, 1964, at the Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She attended Florence Nightingale School, Sisler High School, and later Red River College, where she graduated as a Registered Veterinary Technologist. In 1986, Barbe began working at McLeod Veterinary Hospital, where she spent 37 years passionately caring for animals. She was incredibly proud of the work she did, demonstrated through the love she had for her coworkers and every animal she attended to.

In her younger days, she was an avid cyclist and often rode to work, sometimes with her daughter, Willow, in tow. As Willow grew, they spent weekends riding their bikes down the Wellington Crescent and Wolseley pathways.

Barbe loved animals, and her home always had a cat or two roaming around. Over the years, many cats were loved, the most recent being Twig, who passed in June 2024. She was also passionate about being a vegan, a lifestyle she committed to for all of her adult life. Barbe was well known for her vegan baking, especially her brownies, which were famous for tricking even the most sceptical into enjoying vegan treats.

Barbe often said that creating art kept her sane. She found joy in adorning the walls and shelves of her condo with her creations. A multi-medium artist, she explored sketching, painting, clay, papier-mâché, collage art, and anything else that inspired her. She also loved reading books of all genres and listening to music, passions she passed on to Willow through years of bonding over songs and stories. Barbe was a natural DIY-er, always tackling projects in her home with skill and creativity.

Her greatest love was her daughter, Willow. Barbe was immensely proud of her and everything she did.

The last couple of years were difficult as Barbe courageously fought through her ALS diagnosis. Incredibly strong and fiercely independent, she wanted to do as much as she could for herself until the very end.

Barbe will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Willow; her twin sister, Marie Parke, and husband Gary; her sister, Gloria Van Styvendale; her brother, Allan Parke; and her niece, Nancy Van Styvendale, and husband Al; Granddaughter Ella & the incredible Quigley family. She will also be remembered by numerous other relatives, friends, and coworkers. Barbe was predeceased by her parents, Rudolph and Sophie Parke (1998); and her brother, Robert (Bob) Parke (2006).

At Barbe’s request, no formal service will be held. Instead, Willow asks that any memories or photos be shared with her privately at memoriesforwillowparke@gmail.com and encourages donations to the ALS Society of Manitoba through their website (https://alsmb.ca/donate/).

In Barbe’s memory, hold the ones you love extra tight, listen to your favourite song, or adopt a pet in need of a warm and loving home.

“Ring the bells that still can ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack, a crack in everything

That's how the light gets in.”

I still find it hard to believe that I won't have more time with Barbe. I worked closely with her for over 20 years and we developed a trusting friendship during that time. She mentored me for many years as there was always something new to experience and learn. But she also became a mentor to many over the years as a tech, as a strong, independent woman and as a mother. She cared deeply for the pets she worked with as well as people.

I miss you already.

Willow, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. She was a strong independent woman and will continue to be so in my memories. I know you will inherit those qualities and continue in her memory. Love and take care.

Oh Willow, we are so sorry to hear about your mom. She was one of the sweetest, kindest people we knew. Whether it was sitting watching you girls curling, or taking Misty in for her vet visits, she always was so much fun. Now she and Wayne are together watching over us all with all the animals that loved her.

Barbe was such a nice person, I will never forget! I worked with Barbe at McLeod Vet for 8 years, I remember everything she taught me, we both loved the same work ethics and we always had great conversation about life. She was always interested in Knowing about my culture and about my home country! She was so special for me, I always talked just good things about her, how she was such a role model, like everything had to be perfectly done at what she touched! Barbe I will really miss you, I wish I could come visit more often. May you rest in peace.

Barbe was a dedicated, passionate and valuable team member at our hospital for so many wonderful years. Her skills went well beyond being a superb animal health technician. Barbe was a trouble shooter extraordinaire and a ""miss fix it"" of all our technical equipment. I so much enjoyed working with her every day and especially our talks of music and art. She was as so much more than an employee , she was truly a great friend. I will miss her greatly.

I had the ultimate pleasure of sharing my days with Barbe when I worked at Mcleod vet. She was such a positive spirit and had such a great intellect and wit. Barbe was amazing with animals and always surprised me with how she could talk to nearly any fearful or upset animal and calm them.. She had this amazingly otherworldly calming presence that was unprecedented. I learned so much from her and I will miss her dearly. She left a beautiful impression on everyone who knew her and I was extremely lucky to have known her.

From the age 16 all the way to her last day, Barbe was a very special role model in my life. Her fierce independence and her unconditional love for Willow taught me how healing it is to love your way through the hardest parts of life.

Barbe and Willow welcomed me into their home whenever I needed a safe space to land, and gave me the laughs and support that would carry me through some of my darkest teenage years.

Barbe never missed a happy birthday wish or the opportunity to congratulate for the special milestones celebrated in my life. Beyond caring for and showing her love for me - she took great care of my two dogs Frankie and Biggie, offering all of the love and advice available to her, much beyond working hours.

Barbe, you are loved deeply beyond measure. Your presence will be missed, and the love you held for each of the people close to your heart will ripple on forever.
