DR. ROGER JOSEPH PATUREL

May 22, 1935– January 27, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce that Roger passed away on January 27, 2025, at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, at the age of 89.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years (Ragnhild, née Thomsen); his beloved daughter Lianne (Jeff); adored granddaughters Bianca and Sophia; and many close friends. Let’s not forget his granddog, Thor, to whom he offered way too many treats. He is predeceased by his father Francis and his mother Yvonne.

Roger, only son of Francis and Yvonne (née Girardin) was born in Saint-Pierre (islands of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, France) and spent his early years there, surrounded by many members of the Paturel clan. Roger would eventually make his way to post-secondary education in Halifax, Nova Scotia, graduating from Saint Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Science degree and Dalhousie University with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He was always an avid sportsman and at Dal, he participated in many different university sports.

After graduation, Roger joined the Canadian Armed Forces to practice dentistry. He spent his entire career supporting the dental needs of our troops and achieved the rank of Major. He travelled the world and on one of these trips, while stationed in Germany, he joined his friends on a vacation to Denmark. Little did he know that he would meet the love of his life on a beach there. Roger and Ragnhild married in Hvidbjerg, Denmark in 1969. He was actively involved in many different special assignments during his time in the Armed Forces including United Nations peacekeeping duties in Egypt and Cyprus as well as being a protocol officer for the 1976 Olympics in Montréal.

Roger and Ragnhild lived in many cities in Western Canada and welcomed their daughter Lianne in Brandon, Manitoba.

Roger loved to play board games, card games and complete logic puzzles. He particularly liked to encourage his young daughter Lianne to play games meant for older children. He was always up to date on current and world events and those who knew him referred to him as a ‘learned man’, whatever the topic.

In his early retirement years, he loved to travel and Roger and Ragnhild enjoyed many exotic vacations and cruises around the world. In his later years, he enjoyed curling, lawn bowling and many games of Bridge with friends.

Roger loved getting a ‘deal’ and took great pride in researching all the options and making the best possible decision, regardless of the purchase or investment under consideration. While endearing, it also often drove Ragnhild a little crazy given that no stone could be left unturned in the hunt for the most advantageous offer. Sharp as a tack until the very end, he took great pride in providing for his family and instilling in all around him the value of an earned dollar.

Ever the proud Dad and ‘Grandpère’ as he was called, he was quiet in his praise, preferring to express his feelings in understated nods of approval, complete with a bit of a mischievous grin. He supported his family in an understated manner, providing guidance but never wanting to push his own thoughts on others. He preferred instead to trust that he had set the framework for the best decisions to be made, regardless of the matter at hand.

Roger was deeply loved,

and will be dearly missed.

Roger’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Our sincere condolences to the Paturel family, we remember our fun times, especially marked with your hospitality and great desserts. Roger and I were colleagues serving in the Dental Corps at the Air Base in Winnipeg. Rest in peace brother !

Dave and I admired Roger's intellect and enjoyed his sense of humour. "This Hour has 22 Minutes" was the perfect combination of current affairs and humour and we enjoyed watching it together. Continue to be strong Ragnhil. Our sympathies to you, Lianne and your family.

Barbara and I have known Roger for over 50 years, ever since we were comrades and neighbours at the Shilo Military Base. We were fortunate to enjoy the company of Roger, and indeed Ragnhild, as we often joined together in family dinners, card games, cross country skiing or just plain socializing. Roger and I played many games of golf and while he liked the sport he just hated to lose a golf ball and spent countless time looking for each one.

Rest in Peace Roger for you have served your country well and you can now `Stand easy`.

I have many a happy memory from childhood with the Paturels. Mr. P was a constant presence, at Christmas, many a summer day, or watching me sneak past to go to the basement to play board games in the winter (and fall, spring and summer!).

You will be missed.
