Stephen Paulhus
STEPHEN (ETIENNE) PAULHUS
September 2, 1933 - January 14, 2022
Stephen Paulhus passed peacefully in his sleep on January 14, 2022, at age 88.
Known as a great storyteller, Stephen’s memory will be carried forward by his wife of 67 years, Marie Louise; their children Marguerite (Brent), Claudette (Mike), Daniel, Denis (Sharon), Jackie (Battista), Rose Marie (Miles), and Nicole (Ken); their grandchildren Michael, Stephen, Christin, Mark, Brady, Nicholas, Alexander, Adam, Brittany, and Evan; and great-grandchildren Michael, Hannah, Lyla, Roslynne, Esmae, and Bennett. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings Gerald, Donat, and Dolores; and son Bernard.
Stephen was born to Charles and Agnes Paulhus on their family farm near Bellegarde, Saskatchewan. He often spoke of attending primary school at the convent in Bellegarde and Catholic Boarding School in Otterburne, Manitoba. Steve started his career 1st as a bank teller then Weyburn Mental Hospital where he completed a power engineering apprenticeship then on to Unity where he worked at the salt plant. He worked at Grey Nuns Hospital and Saskatchewan Power for many years in Regina.
Stephen and Marie-Louise met as young adults through their church choir in Redvers and married on October 5, 1954. They started their life together in a small one room apartment in Weyburn and moved several times before settling onto a hobby farm in Jameson, Saskatchewan with their eight children. Stephen worked hard so that they could take the family on vacations and camping trips across Canada. While working as an engineer, he put in extra time selling encyclopedias for World Book as well as many side jobs such as cutting and raking grass for residences and businesses alike. Stephen was quickly promoted and relocated the family to Winnipeg in 1972 to further pursue sales full-time. He finished his career at London Life retiring at 55.
Stephen has remained active in the church through his life singing in the choir and doing readings at all the parishes they were at. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them about his woodworking projects. He was known for multiple different projects but mostly for his personalized cribbage boards and that his wife Marie-Louise painted. Stephen had a vested interest in politics, sports, opera, music and biographies. As much as he loved to read about other people’s lives, his own passionate storytelling is how he will be remembered by his family, whom he loved and was deeply proud of.
While there was much travel across Canada and the US for both pleasure and business, 3 of their memorable trips were the train trip to BC then to Europe where they met family on both sides in England and Belgium, and an Alaskan hockey themed cruise with some of his favourite NHL players.
A service in Stephen’s memory will be live streamed on Friday, Jan 21, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. on the St Charles website on YouTube. Go to Saintcharleswpg.com and go to the Youtube icon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Canada, and Seven Oaks Foundation.
The Paulhus family would like to thank Dr. Woo, Dr. Coodin, and the many healthcare providers at the Seven Oaks Hospital Dialysis Unit 1 as well as the many home care nurses and workers.
