ARLEIGH BETTY JEAN PERKINS

February 20, 1933 – January 4, 2022

Arleigh Perkins passed away peacefully on January 4, 2022, at her residence, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was surrounded by her family and dear friend, Mary Braun.

She is survived by her sons Casey (Sheryl), and Stephen (Deborah); grandchildren Alex and Holly; nieces, nephews, and many good friends in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand.

Arleigh was born in Winnipeg on Feb 20, 1933, to Stephen and Isabella Perkins and was the youngest of four children, Isabel, Georgina, and Stephen.

Following her graduation from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, Arleigh worked in numerous and varied jobs most recently as a bookkeeper for the accounting firm of Dean R Jenkyns. She was a long-time volunteer with the Red River Exhibition and a member of the Eastern Star, serving as its Worthy Matron for a time.  She had a passion for music and loved to sing and entertain, which she did often throughout the years. Her knitting skills were legendary, and she donated countless mitts, scarves, and toques to children in need.

As a young adult, a sense of adventure led Arleigh to live in Seattle and Las Vegas. Upon her return to Winnipeg, she met Bill Porter through their common interest in competitive roller skating. They were married for 17 years. Bill’s military service took them to live in various eastern Canadian cities, before settling back in Winnipeg to start a family.

Roller skating took Arleigh to New Zealand as a coach in later years. She made many friends while living there and reconnected with Harry Tomlinson, an ANZAC airman whom her family had billeted during WW2. Their romance ended too soon when he passed away suddenly before they were able to start their lives together. Following this unfortunate turn, Arleigh returned to Winnipeg a final time.

Arleigh enjoyed many animal companions over the years including two engaging chihuahuas that befriended many of her condo neighbours. Her most recent furry friend, a cat named Missy was by her side to the end. During her retirement, Arleigh set about writing her life story. She wrote hundreds of pages documenting her many adventures, loves, losses, challenges, and successes—a precious gift to her family.

Arleigh was rebellious, stubborn, loving, generous, adventurous, and determined. In her later years she battled against several ailments with the support of family, care workers and especially her friend Mary. She faced her final moments with courage and dignity.

A family gathering of remembrance and celebration will be held later in the year.

Arleigh’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Donations on Arleigh’s behalf may be made to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.

Leonie and Philip Mawkes

Philip and I have so many wonderful memories from our time in Winnipeg and will forever be grateful to Arleigh for opening her home to us so that we could re-charge our travelling batteries. She was the Mum (Mom) we very much needed but was quick to join in our youthful misadventures, none more memorable that Phil's 21st birthday shenanigans! Anyone there on that night of horizontal bungee mayhem and tequila shots will remember, at least vaguely....Thanks to Arleigh our stay in Winnipeg will remain a highlight of our Canadian travels. Arleigh remained in touch with us over the years and delighted in hearing of our marriage and the birth of our daughters, now grown. Arleigh was the most generous, kind, funny, optimistic and mischievous person and it was a privilege to have felt part of her life. xxxx With love also from Philip's parents Jack and Judith Mawkes (both deceased) ❤ Leonie and Philip Mawkes

Our sincere sympathy to the family. Many years ago Arleigh coached Carol and Myself in roller skating . We all became close friends. Later she became friends with my mom Lil Pilon. They visited us at the cottage by Grand Beach & played many games of cards. We have a lot of happy memories of ArleighMike and Pennie Pilon

Sorry to hear of your Mom's passing.  She was  great lady.  I will remember her always as the coolest mom, sitting in her living room knitting while we partied in her basement.  I would always love to chat with her at those parties.  Farewell, Arleigh.❤

… family ties loosened when our mom (Arleigh’s sister Blue) died in 71.  Hard to pick up those connections (us cousins) in later years….  until FB and covid, alas not in person.  Thinking of you Casey & Stephen, and yours. Tom and I had a conversation last night about her roller/figure skating accomplishments, her siblings and our grandparents (Wpg Beach)  - all so long ago. regards, Cathy Murray

I first met Arleigh  thru a mutual friend over 12 years ago.  She was bold, smart, funny, kind, and opinionated.  I moved into the same condo building a few years later, and we got to be good friends. She a lived a full life and was full of love for her family and pets.  My condolences to her family and many friends.  She was loved by many and shall be missed.

I first met Arleigh when she taught me dance skating at the Winnipeg Roller Rink in the 70s and 80s. Later in 2002 we crossed paths again in Eastern Star. She was a wonderful woman with a lovely smile, great sense of humor  and a wonderful voice. I know she will be missed by many. My deepest condolences to the family and all friends.
