ADRIEN PERRAS

August 23, 1954 - December 23, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Adrien Perras shares the news of his sudden passing at the Health Sciences Centre on the evening of Dec. 23, 2021 at the age of 67 years. Although his life was marked by kidney issues, he was unrelenting in his pursuit of fully enjoying life, which he did exceptionally well.

Adrien, a man of all seasons with a zest for life was a remarkable father to Kim and devoted grandfather to Mia.  His loving, loyal wife Rosemary was his partner in all adventures including dialysis. Adrien was born and raised in St. François Xavier, alongside siblings Yvonne (Ken) and Marc (Jennifer). Also left to mourn his passing are nieces Alice and Elise (Richard) and nephew Chris (Sara) and their children as well as nephew Justin (Mel). He was predeceased by his parents Alice and Henry Perras along with multiple aunts and uncles, including his favourite Uncle Gene who taught him mechanical skills, fostering one of Adrien’s favourite pastimes.

At age 22, Adrien experienced kidney failure which rocked his world, but he was incredibly blessed to receive a transplant before requiring dialysis. He fully recognized this gift of life and sought to live every day to the fullest. After university, he worked with Probation Services of Manitoba in various positions for 31 years, most recently in the Restorative Justice unit.

Adrien enjoyed exceptional health for someone with a kidney transplant for over 40 years and was celebrated as a true success story for transplants. To mark this important milestone, two CBC video interviews were conducted on the importance of signing the online donor registry and overcoming a kidney transplant and celebrating life. (to view, visit links)

When his kidney began to fail four years ago, he and Rosemary began the long and difficult journey towards dialysis. This new journey in dialysis began in April 2019 and they were fortunate to receive training to do hemodialysis at home. This was a gruelling undertaking with Adrien experiencing many health issues throughout the process but they successfully transitioned to home dialysis in September 2019. They remain incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have done this at home rather than in hospital, most especially throughout the pandemic.

Adrien and Rosemary were a true partnership throughout the dialysis venture, sharing the workload and gratefully thanking each other at the end of each session. Their “mask kiss” was always a warm ritual in an otherwise difficult time. Dialysis slowly became easier with experience and recent machine adjustments made the process easier on him; however, it severely curtailed the active life he longed for.

After a long, difficult process, Adrien’s brother Marc was successfully approved as a live donor in November 2021 and the surgery was conducted on December 16th. The transplanted kidney did very well and performed as expected. This renewed hope was bittersweet, as Adrien soon developed complications from the surgery and died on December 23rd. Rosemary and the family will be forever grateful to Marc for this selfless gift.

Adrien was a devoted father to Kim and spent seven years as a single parent before marrying Rosemary. He was a steadfast attendee at all sports and theatre activities, forever cheering her on. Very proud to be the father of the school valedictorian! Their home was a favourite gathering place for Kim’s circle of friends, which was largely driven by a fondness for Adrien.

In 2004, Kim made the decision to move to Ottawa for school and work. The special bond between father and daughter was strengthened as Adrien helped her move across the country and later bought a house with her under trying circumstances. He did the cross-country move in true Adrien style, living in his beloved Honda Element in a Walmart parking lot while negotiating house and moving details. While on dialysis, using the miracle of FaceTime, Adrien managed to participate in Kim’s home renovations during the pandemic including input on a new kitchen, bathroom and deck.

Adrien was a strong supporter of Kim’s fitness business and proud of her accomplishments, including getting her Pro-Card this fall.  He was very impressed by her creativity in maintaining and developing her business throughout the pandemic. As usual, he quickly became a favourite of Kim’s friends and is widely loved and admired, as ‘Papa Peppers’.

A true joy in Adrien’s life has been his relationship with grand-daughter Mia (now 17) and her parents Rachelle and Marcel. Their unique family is a model for Open Adoption. Adrien was so grateful to Kim for this gift and to Rachelle and Marcel who welcomed them as new members of their family and gave Adrien the opportunity to be a Pepère. Mia shared a special relationship and close bond with her Pepère and they had so much fun throughout the years.

Adrien was a man who loved physical activity and the outdoors. An all around athlete, he grew up playing most sports (except for football where he would have been decimated) but was especially involved with baseball and curling. Curling continued to be constant in his life and his teams at the Deer Lodge and Assiniboine Curling Clubs have many legendary stories about the bonspiels they entered. He was always an active cyclist and cross country skier and then took up running (including a half marathon), roller blading with his daughter, and working out regularly at the Rady Centre.

Gifted with a rock climbing course for Father’s Day by Rosemary and Kim, he quickly became an active rock climber and then developed a new passion for ice climbing and mountaineering.  He spent countless hours at the St. Boniface Alpine Club’s ice tower at Whittier Park helping to build the ice tower, climbing, working and competing at Festiglace and teaching climbing skills to high school students. Friendships made at Club d’Escalade de St-Boniface were among the most important in his life. Many trips to the Rocky Mountains were made to climb with friend Toni, attend Alpine Club camps, and enjoy the challenge of mountaineering. Climbing to the Abbot’s Hut and the top of Mount Victoria was a highlight of his life. The mountaineering events usually had some alarming event and would end with a call to Rosemary saying “I’m ok, but…”.

Summer also involved hiking accompanied by Rosemary with the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies for many years. This involved hiking every day from a high altitude base camp featuring amazing scenery, building strong friendships, and having great fun at campfires and skit night. Adrien was much loved as the camp host for 3 years entertaining people with his wit and hi-jinks.

Rosemary introduced Adrien to canoeing, followed by   kayaking. Living on the Assiniboine River allowed for leisurely kayaks up to Assiniboine Park using a great new dock equipped with a winch system installed by Adrien. Day trips with the Grey Hares of Nature Manitoba and the Alpine Club were features of local adventures in and around Winnipeg and two weeks were spent every summer at a cottage in Rushing River to enjoy the beauties of Blindfold Lake. Unable to go for two years due to health challenges and the pandemic, they were able to return this summer with support from dialysis at Kenora Hospital. Adrien transitioned to a fishing kayak propelled by foot pedals which allowed an easier passage and he took up fishing. They were so happy to get back to Camp Waterfall, its beautiful surroundings and good friendships. Their granddaughter Mia came to the cottage each year and they have many precious memories of playing dress-up when she was younger and fishing together as she grew.

Covid brought its difficulties but living on the Assiniboine River brought them so much joy. The tight-knit neighbourhood community came together to develop an amazing system of skating and skiing trails last winter. Adrien was a regular in shovelling these trails and enjoying skating again albeit with a hockey stick for balance. Another testament to his desire for adventure and recreation. This winter, the trails were already started before his surgery and once again Adrien was out there the day before entering hospital, working away.

Adrien was a man of wit (sometimes caustic!), creativity, humour and wide-ranging interests. He was able to add fun to almost anything.  Early in their marriage, they took a year off  work and school for Kim and took a road trip to the east coast, followed by three months in New Zealand, where they did several wonderful multi-day hikes. For many years Rosemary and Adrien enjoyed hiking trips throughout Canada and the US, especially loving Sedona, AZ. France with friends Clark and Joan was another special time.

Adrien particularly enjoyed fix-it projects and woodworking. His workshop was always pristine and rich in tools. A regular “MacGyver”,  he believed in fixing, not tossing!

Reading, going to the theatre, following Formula 1 racing, and participating in the Retired Gentleman’s Book Club were among his more sedentary past-times.

The family is grateful to the various renal services of HSC and to the doctors and nurses who tried so valiantly to save his life after a successful transplant occurred. A special thanks to family and all those friends who supported them faithfully through many trials and tribulations.

Cremation has occurred and a private family gathering has been planned. There will be a celebration of his life in the spring when we can meet in the outdoors he so loved. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada in his honour. The family also hopes that people will consider signing up to be an organ donor which is done on-line at  signupforlife.ca

Dear Rosemary, My heart reaches out to you.  There were so many hopes for the success of the operation.  Adrien faced life with much optimism and enthusiasm.  He was so thoughtful—I remember him coming to fix my screen door when Ian was so ill. I was amazed at the energy and activities that you both enjoyed together even through the difficult times.  Until I can hug you in person, my thoughts are with you.

Our deepest condolences, Rosemary and Kim. We have many happy memories of shared experiences with Adrien. I remember on a wilderness canoe trip, we were relaxing at the end of a day of paddling.  We were sitting at the lake's edge looking out at the sunset. Adrien was wading in the water and looking back at us. In his quiet, understated manner, he says calmly, "you guys, there's a bear behind you."  Adrien was always a kidder and we all laughed and continuing looking out at the water.  Raising his voice a little, he repeated his statement.  On his third try, we turned and realized it was NO joke. There was in fact, a bear behind us and it was approaching our camp.  Needless to say, we broke camp hastily with Willy standing guard with the bear spray. Although it was late in the day, we had to paddle another hour to find a place to camp for the night.  Through all the excitement, I'll always remember how calm Adrien was, even in an real emergency.

How special we feel to have shared time & experiences with a special person named Adrien Perras! We were lucky to have hiked and tent- shared with Rosemary and Adrien while attending SkyLine Hikers in the Rockies. In a short time we realized what a knowledgeable and capable hike-leader Adrien was and what a  great sense of humour! His quick wit showed up the time that we were assigned a tent that was so located that we were not able to stand up in it!       We also experienced Adrien as a skilled curling skip who took curling very seriously; he was demanding in his expectations of us but was even harder on himself.  More recently, we spent many pleasant hours drinking coffee and swapping stories with Adrien & Rosemary as they expertly teamed through the dialyzing process.  We are very thankful for the life of Adrien and  extend our deepest sympathy to Rosemary and to all of his family.  Clark and Joan

Adrien, Yvonne and Mark were my friends when we moved next door to them in the early 60's and the adventures we shared were many and fondly remembered.  Not that long ago we bumped into each other at a fundraiser for Darcy's Arc and was so happy to see him again, and shortly afterward his brother Marc and I met again at a wedding. Yvonne has kept in touch through my sister.  Our friendships are cherished.   We were three and they were too and we roamed the prairie fields, the bush areas and in winter skated on the slough behind our property.  My memories are of granaries, tree houses, football on the lawn and the freedom we had to explore and challenge ourselves.  We talked about a get together with our spouses and to my regret that did not take place.  My siblings are sad to hear of his passing and so I send condolences and sympathy to his entire family.  He was a good friend who's impact on our lives will not be forgotten.  May he rest in peace, until we meet again.

Dear Rosemary, although I should feel sad, truthfully right now I feel blown away by the story of Adrien's life you've given us in words and pictures.  They make me want to put on my parka and head outdoors right now, which is what I'll do.   Wishing you warmth through the cold, smiles through the rain, and a peace that surpasses all understanding.  Hugs to you and your family.

My memory of Adrien is through  many years of knowing Rosemary, as I met Adrien only once.  As a couple, Adrien and Rosemary were striking to me as a couple so respectful of each other's way of being and doing, and joyous in their living, as well as massively appreciative of each other.  Lorne and I will be thinking of all of Adrien's family as you keep close to your memories of him.

Dear Rosemary and the family of Adrien Perras, I am saddened to hear of Adrien's passing.  Although I did not know him well, I feel I know him now with the video, obituary that you, as a family have so lovingly put together. What an amazing man and how fortunate for all of you to have had him in your life. Celebrate the beautiful times and memories you all have of him.  His life as a transplant recipient is a testament for all.  My daughter-in-law is a transplant recipient and she has taught us many lessons about celebrating life every day. If Adrien left a legacy for all of us, it was to sign your donor card.  Sincerely, Terumi, a former colleague of Rosemary's at the Child Guidance Clinic.

Adrien was a multi-talented man who loved life and was dedicated to physical fitness. He shared 30 years of a happy marriage with Rosemary. My husband Bill and I hosted their wedding reception in our home. Adrien treasured his daughter, Kim, whom he raised on his own during her early years. I have many fond memories of times shared with Adrien and Rosemary. He was a good man.

Adrien was the probation officer "shepherd" for our St. John's Youth Justice Council in the early 2000s. I loved working with him and grew to respect his skills, his warmth and his respectful interactions with us. What a beautiful man!

My sincerest condolences and prayers to Kim, Rosemary and Mia and the rest of Adrien's extended family. I only met Poppa Peppers once but I was so impressed with his gentle smile, unassuming humility, sense of humor and obvious love for his daughter, Kim. What an incredible man and what an incredibly successful and adventurous life he led. May your memories of him continue to grow brighter and deeper as the years pass. What a legacy he has left. God bless you all and may God's peace and comfort be a blanket of presence for you in this time of grief.

Dear Rosemary, Kim and all Adrien’s family: We will always remember Adrien’s dry sense of humour, his gentle manner, his courage and competence in all he did. He taught us crucial lessons about seizing the moment and experiencing the challenges and beauty of nature.  We cherish our times together, sharing a meal in your sunroom, chatting about trips taken and new ones planned, while watching the river roll by. Kim, it was so evident how he adored you and Mia. Rosemary, we are forever grateful that you brought Adrien into our lives. As we say in Yiddish, you and Adrien were ‘basherte’, soul mates fated to be together. Please know you are surrounded by the love and admiration of so many friends to support you in the days and years ahead. With sadness and much love, Sari, Neil, Simon Sarah Kai and Leah

I  met Adrien over 35 years ago. I had just been hired as a Probation Officer and we worked in the same office.  Thus began a very long and rewarding friendship. Both his co-workers as well as myself understood that this was a man of many qualities. The words intelligent, compassionate, genuine, and straightforward immediately come to mind. I believe that those attributes were a constant with Adrien, and they permeated every aspect of his personal and professional life.  At work I found his steadfast friendship and counsel invaluable. I also know that his work with what could sometimes be a challenging clientele resulted in many success stories.  On a personal note, Adrien and I spent many hours together over the years. To his great credit, he tried to teach me both to canoe and curl.  Unfortunately the results were not what he might have hoped for (to put it mildly)!  We also spent many hours doing what friends do-just talking. Every subject was on the table-from his many exploits (who can forget that South Dakota tenting trip in a March snowstorm) to the truly comical (his love for Austin Powers movies???)  I will miss the long talks and the camaraderie with my friend. His loss his monumental. My deepest and heart felt sympathies to Rosemary and the entire family. Brian Troughton (friend)

Want to send my condolences today in this note to those I did not mention yesterday but who were also so close to Adrien and are suffering his loss so deeply. I have enjoyed meeting you in Winnipeg when visiting Adrien and my sister, Rosemary, and and are grateful for having had those opportunities as my brother-in-law generously welcomed me into their home and shared his family with me. So my heart goes out to Yvonne and Ken, Marc, Alice and Elise and Chris, Justin, and Rachelle and Marcel. May your memories of Adrien give you some solace in this time of grief. I will remember this amazing man in many ways, chiefly as a wonderful husband to my sister.

My Condolences to the family of Adrien. Adrien and I went to high school together,  he was a year or two older. Long ago he taught me how to use a 35 mm camera. His patience and humor will never be forgotten. It's important for the family to know, that skill has served me well over the years having taken pictures of hockey teams, proms and graduations all to the credit of Adrien. The knowledge that Adrien shared allowed me capture pictures from across the world and eventually in my work to capture evidence as a fire investigator. Adrien I always wanted to say thankyou for that. Few people leave an impression like Adrien did. He was truly a kind soul. May he rest in peace and God bless him and all of you.

Condolences to Adrien’s family. We knew Adrien through our climbing activities at the St. Boniface Alpine Club Ice Tower. We had the pleasure of volunteering alongside Adrien on several occasions. True to this tribute he was a beloved member of our urban climbing community and an inspiration to us all. The sadness felt upon hearing of his death is real but at the same time we feel very happy for the fullness of the life he so clearly lived.   You left too soon Adrien and you will be missed. Condolences. Funny thing in your wonderful obituary you mentioned he never played football. The one thing I think of first when ever I heard his name are the memories I have of Adrian playing touch mini football on the lawn in front of his house in S.F.X. He would throw long bombs to myself and his little brother Marc. We played that game for days and days on end almost every fall... just the three of us. I remember asking him once why we didn't play tackle and he briefly reminded me that he had kidney problems and could not risk physical contact. Never a word about it to me his neighbor before or after.  That was over fifty years ago. Funny the things you remember most about people and how they stay with you through the years. I never forgot that conversation we had that day. So ironic looking back now. For sure he will be missed.
