Clyde Perry
WILLIAM “CLYDE” PERRY
Clyde Perry died peacefully on Sunday, October 13, two months and three days short of his 100th birthday. If he was writing this obituary, it would simply say “Clyde died.” He definitely did not want a funeral or any flowery accolades. But he would love those who remember him fondly to raise a glass in his honour.
Clyde was predeceased by his first wife, Audrie; as well as his three siblings, Thelma, Helen, and Dorothy. He leaves behind his three daughters, Donna Robertson (Murray), Cathy Cable (Doug), and Susan Keith (Ron); six grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. He was a beloved Poppa to his grandchildren, especially Gillian and Daniel Keith.
Clyde was born at the Lakehead (Thunderbay) but grew up on the mean streets of downtown Winnipeg during the depression. In 1943 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy to “help make the world safe for democracy” but also to get a warm coat and new boots. He always appreciated the Canadian government veterans’ support program which enabled him to complete his education.
Clyde went into teaching and was a long-term employee of the Winnipeg School Division where his last assignment was as principal at Tec Voc High School. He loved working with young people and was a great support to many. He touched many lives with his generosity, kindness and common sense all in the name of “just doing my job”. His impact on some may never be known by most. He was a good man even though he would often drop a sharp F into his conversations, a habit he picked up in the navy.
Even though Clyde did not play team sports he was a firm believer in the value of sport for young people. He worked tirelessly to foster the growth of basketball in Winnipeg. He organized, refereed, and even coached basketball at the high school level. His efforts in this area were recognized when he was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.
Clyde enjoyed snooker, bridge playing, bowling and took up golf in his retirement where he was known for having a sweet swing. He spent many happy hours at Niakwa golf course until his foursome dwindled into a onesome. He enjoyed conversation and sharing ideas and was frustrated in his later years when his hearing loss made listening to others difficult for him.
He will be greatly missed by his second wife, Jill Fox; their housemate, Karla Yallits; and their 2 dogs, Henry and Oliver. He was a sweet man, a loyal friend and a great companion. An energetic force for good in this world. Rest well, my love.
Clyde’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I first met Mr Perry whan I was 5 years old attending a free YMCA night at Robertson school. We re connected while attending Sisler High School where I was fortunate to be enrolled in his English class. As a counselled he was extremely helpful in guiding me in a number of ways.
Mr Perry gave me my wfirst opportunity to teach in the WSD when he Showed enlightenment faith in me by hiring me to teach at Tec Voc. During my time at Tec my wife Margaret and I had many surprise visits by Mr Perry and his wife
Mr Perry was not only a mentor., educator ad administrator but truly a friend, He was someone who pushed your buttons to succeed and achieve what he believed that you could do
I am extremely for all that he did forr me and can never thank him enough for his friendship and kindness
You will be fondly remember by both Margaret and I

Clyde was a cousin of my father 'outlaw' Clay Perry. When we moved to Winnipeg Clyde was one of the first of many to show me the kindness and integrity of this place and many of its community. We was gruff in the kindest way.

Mr Perry was one of my teachers in Jr. High at Issac Newton...Even today I remember some of the things he said at that time... 60+ years ago... He was also a great coach and had an incredible ability to connect with people, young and old. Thanks again for all your efforts, Mr Perry. You made this world a better place!

I was a graduate of Tech Voc 1976, Mr. Perry offered his guidance to me as a young teenager, which I took very seriously. I kept in contact with him years after I graduated and often went out for lunch with him. I invited him to my wedding and the day before the wedding day he stopped by my house as he lost the invitation. As always, he showed up for me. I will always treasure my memories of him.

I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Perry but because of him, my husband 's life was changed. Bob only had Grade 10 when we were married and Bob's aim was to finish high school. He started by taking night school courses at Daniel McIntyre. Mr. Perry was one of Bob's teachers.. Because of the encouragment from Mr. Perry, Bob went on to the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre, University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. Bob got his Grade 12,.. B.A., and B.Ed. He never forgot Mr. Perry.
I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Perry was an inspiration.

Tec Voc student 1981-84. I would not have graduated without Mr Perry's help. I was navigating a chaotic home, almost full time job and school. He helped me without judgement but also no bs. He was a straight shooter and appreciated the same. Rest easy Mr Perry and thank you for stepping up when those at home were not.

Tec Voc student 82-85.. Mr. Perry made Tex Voc and the tough years in high school so much easier. He always had time to talk if you needed to, give advice when required or let you use his car in an emergency. He allowed each and every student of 1500 feel like you were important and seen among so many. I was honoured to see him at a reunion many years ago and enjoy the warm hello and hug that he was known for. Rest in peace Mr. Perry. Keep smiling down on us ❤️

I've always been so proud to call him my poppa. There were so many times in my life people would light up when I mentioned his name. It became clear to me as an adult why--when I would meet him for dinner, everyone from the owner to waitstaff would know him by name and come over for a chat. He had such a magnetic personality and you could tell he cared for those he knew. I will miss his incredible stories (he would have you hanging on every word) and his genuine kindness. Love you, Poppa. Rest in Peace.

My Uncle Clyde. He was a man who always made me feel important and was definitely interested in me as a young person growing up. He helped guide me through schooling and career decisions. I witnessed for myself his iconic principal days as I spent 6 months at Tec Voc. I was really proud to say I was his niece.
He gave the best "Toast to the Bride" speech in history and treated me like a princess when he would come visit me when I lived out west. He told me so many stories of his past and he wanted to hear mine as well. I learned a lot from my Uncle Clyde. He always made me feel special and I hope he knew how much he was loved by me and so many . RIP. You deserve it.

My brother and I lived with my Poppa for our whole childhood/teens/young adulthood. When I was a little girl he used to sit with me and tell me nursery rhymes from his childhood. Some of them were a bit dark, but sitting with him and talking to him I always felt calm and safe.
For a small man, he had a large presence. His love was unwavering, and I always felt comfortable talking to him about the things that were on my mind, the small things and the big ones.
He taught me how to do crossword puzzles, I never was as good as him though. He knew all the answers to every one! One time, I was late for curfew and he stood out in a snow storm in front of the garage waiting for me....(I got the full principle that night! I was never late again). He drove me and picked me up from school whenever I asked, which was almost always, and when he was away he let me use his cars, first and last time I've driven a Mercedes!
When I woke up on the morning of 9-11 he was home and we watched the tv together in his room for hours. He made me feel safe. He had a wisdom to him, that made the overwhelming things feel manageable. I am not nearly as eloquent as him but it was always as simple as life is too short for bullshit.
I eventually moved to Calgary and had a family of my own, but whenever we went home to visit my kids would run into Great Poppas room and say hi, and I would go sit on his bed and catch up on life.
I knew my Poppa was kind of a big deal at Tec Voc and in the education community. Whenever we were out in the neighborhood or at a restaurant there was always old students of his stopping to say hello. When I went to school all my teachers knew who my poppa was. It wasn't until I got older that I realized how rare and special a life that impacts so many people is.
I am so proud of you Poppa, but not as proud as I always felt you were of me.
Thank you for everything, rest well and I'll be seeing you.
xoxo

I attended Tec Voc from September 1976 to June 1979. Mr. Perry was a very big presence in our school. I met with him twice in his office and although I was in a little bit of trouble, he just gave me his advice and/or a warning and sent me on my way. I always admired the respect he managed to receive from all the students. Even the bad boys knew better than to cross him. He hit the smoking room a few times a day to try to ensure the kids in there weren't breaking the rules or supposed to be in class. I last saw Mr. Perry at the Tec Voc 60th anniversary. He was super gracious and accommodating, allowing everyone to take pictures with him. I have attached a picture of Mr. Perry with my friend (sister from another mister) Cheryl McLeod (Bittner) and myself at the 2011 anniversary social. Rest Easy Mr. Perry - you were one great guy!!!

Clyde Perry was a mentor and friend to me. He and his wonderful wife Audrie took me into their home for a few months after a messy personal situation. Their generosity and kindness helped me through a crisis, but I was not the only one to benefit from their kindness. Clyde (Mr. Perry) hired me to teach at the beginning of my career at Tec Voc High School where I worked for 3 years. I learned many lessons about teaching and living. He was a good principal, not necessarily easy on people, but he was fair and appreciated students and teachers who worked hard to make Tec Voc a top notch school. Because I had become a family member I continued to keep in touch after my time at Tec Voc and visited with him whenever I had a chance. i appreciated his sage advice and life experiences but most of all his sense of humour about life and living. He had a twinkle in his eye and a zest for life. He loved his students, and they appreciated that love and responded in kind. That was his advice to me as a beginner teacher. 'If you want to be successful it's not necessarily what you teach them, it's how they feel when they're in your class.'' Definitely a life lesson. To most of his students, Mr. Perry made them feel listened to and cared for. That's how I felt too in his one on one time with me.
You will be remembered and missed Clyde Perry. Thank you for your life lessons, your love! and support. My deepest condolences to your family and loved ones!

I became close to Mr Perry when i was in the role of student president in 1976 at Tec Voc. I feel he was a pioneer of understanding and practicing that creating a bond with students was the most important thing an educator can do to make a difference. His time was spent in the fields, cafeteria and hallways of the school where the students were, he was hardly ever in his office, unless confidentiality was needed. He is a mentor to all educators; a unique man who always sincerely wanted his students to succeed. He naturally earned the respect of every student who walked his hallways.... Rest in peace Sir, and thank you for your guidance

I was having waaay too much fun there. Mr. Perry knew who I was. While I was getting decent enough marks, I guess I was shy of 1 or 2 to graduate. I show up in Sept and he grabs me aside and we count my credits together. He says, "dammit man, you don't deserve to be here, go live your life!!" I'll never forget this man. Rest easy, Mr. Perry. I feel privileged to have known Mr. Perry!
He taught my Mom when she attended Tec Voc in the '60's and then was the Principal during my tenure from 1977 to 1980.
He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in those blue eye!
Mr. Perry often accompanied those of us in The Belles to our many performance, always helping to carry the cases of bells and offer a ride to the engagements if necessary. He also joined us to help Miss Jones keep us in line on our annual Belle Trips.
He was equally supportive of our efforts in the Choir and Company groups over the years.
Deepest condolences to his family and friends. You were very lucky to have him with you so long!

You always knew that Mr Perry was on your side...even if you were in trouble in or even out of school. He was your best friend and you knew it because he wouldn't put up with your BS. He was your best friend because when you hurt, he hurt for you. He was your big brother because if anybody messed with you they would deal with him. He was your surrogate father...there with the advice, the directions and when necessary the discipline. But you always knew all of it was because of his love for HIS kids.
Rest In Paradise Mr. P.

While I was there i was a cheer leader, he took all of us to Minneapolis to end the basketball year. Mr Perry didn't have to do this but he chose to do this to encourage us to not give up on ourselves. He went the extra mile to know us, stop and talk as well as encourage us.
He was a good human through & through and taught by example.

- Principal Perry was tough but very fair. I remember just like yesterday of his retirement announcement in an assembly in 1985 at Tec Voc. Even though we didn't talk, we hand shaked, and he had a smile on his face. I knew he was a man of integrity. I did a movie at Tec Voc last year and took a photo of his image on the wall. Alot if memories came to mind. RIP Mr Perry.

Mr. Perry was a selfless, tireless, no nonsense champion for any student who needed help. Whether it was through encouragement or tough love, he cared about all of them and wanted them to succeed. Especially the less fortunate in the Inner City. He understood their challenges.
In all the years I worked in the office at Tec Voc, I never called him Clyde. It was always Mr. Perry, out of respect for his work ethic and commitment to the school.
His infectious smile, his crooning singing voice and sense of humour were a joy to me. It meant he was having a good day!
RIP Mr. Perry. You will be missed, but remembered by many. Including me.

I was sad to hear Mr. Perry passed away. He was a part of so many lives. We all met him at Sisler when he was a boys' guidance counselor. But….the girls preferred seeing him to chat about any concerns they had and appreciated his advice! Years went by and wouldn’t you know it …our paths crossed when he was principal of Tec Voc and I was a student working on my Education degree. It was my second degree and I’m sure he was pleased but very amused that one of those silly girls that used to see him at Sisler was going to be a teacher! He arranged for me to do some research in study skills at Tec but told me he didn’t believe a word I was saying in my hypothesis! When I concluded the research he looked at my data, told me he was wrong and implemented a study skills option the following school year. Shortly after we approached the Minister of Education and nominated Mr. Perry for the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt award. She loved the idea and the wheels for the award were set in motion. There was a big assembly that day in June/1985 and Mr. Perry was really surprised when the Minister got up to speak about her tour of the school and added the other reason she was there was to present him with the MB Order of the Buffalo Hunt. Mr. Perry looked shocked…..and some of us knew we could be in very big trouble with him because he hated surprises! But he was happy and thanked us for nominating him when he eventually found out who did it!
Mr.Perry was truly a force of nature that will forever live in the minds of so many who had an opportunity to know him.
