CARRIE PETER

Carrie Peter (nee Chypyha) was born June 15, 1935, and peacefully gained her wings and returned to her eternal home on Tuesday October 10, 2023, at the age of 88 years young.

Grandma was the 7th child of Mary and John Chypyha and she had 5 sisters and 6 brothers.  

Grandma and her siblings learned from a very young age that to get the things they wanted in life, they must work hard, and that is what Grandma did. She worked various jobs over the years to make ends meet. Grandma always wanted us kids to know the value of hard work.

She met the love of her life Glen Peter in 1954, they were young and so in love and embarked on a lifelong journey getting married in 1955. They both worked very hard to create the life they wanted. Their love brought them 4 beautiful children to whom she was so proud of. She was their biggest supporter and cheerleader, seeing them live out their childhood/young adult dreams in sports and in life in general. Not only was seeing her children succeed but oh how she was rooting for us grandkids/great grandkids. We could always count on her being in the stands cheering us on. If she couldn’t make it in person (she would die trying I tell you) she would call and share some words of encouragement every time. Her family was her pride and joy. She would always say how truly blessed she was. She was the matriarch of our family; we are forever grateful for our Gran.

Grandma had so many passions in life, golfing, curling, cooking, painting, sewing and being with nature to name a few. With her ability to create amazing meals with very little groceries in the house, to picking up a paint brush and creating a beautiful masterpiece, to which many of us family members are fortunate enough to have them hanging in our homes. Grandma had the attitude “why not.” She never looked at things with the attitude that she couldn’t do something, it was more “I will figure it out as I go,” and her stubbornness also contributed to her ability to meet her goals. She loved to sew, making a lot of the kids’ clothes growing up. She created the most beautiful quilts, which many of us grandkids were the recipients of such precious gifts.

Grandma had a competitive spirit. If you ever played a game of cribbage or Wizard with her, you would know what I am talking about. The card games were very therapeutic (though stressful-if that’s even possible) during her long stays at the hospital. She enjoyed the friends she made who took a liking to these games with her. Even when we were little kids and grandma, and grandpa would take us to Kildonan Park grandma always had to beat us down the toboggan slide. We sure had fun!

My Uncle Doug said “mom loved family, she was loyal and would have done anything for family and friends.  She had many friends over the years, too many to count. She loved all our friends too, cooking them a meal or making late-night snacks and was always asking about them! Our friends were just an extension of her family.”

 Grandma was an amazing cook. Nobody will make perogies as good as she, though many of us are so fortunate that she took the time to teach us the art of making the perfect perogy. Her scones and cabbage rolls were delicious too. My mom Jan inherited her love for cooking from Grandma. We certainly never left grandma’s or Mom’s kitchen hungry, there was always enough food to feed an army.

Grandma’s faith was strong. She loved her God. The trials she faced and overcame, she knew God had a hand in carrying her through. She encouraged all of us to call on Jesus and choose him. Even in her final moments she rested easily knowing that God was with her, and she could not wait to join him in her eternal life. The comfort that she had knowing she was safe made her pass that much more peaceful for her and those that grieve losing her. We know she is in a much better place. “With God all things are possible.”

Grandma will be lovingly remembered by her Son Rick (Lorie), Daughter Jan, Son Doug,-Son in-Law Garry, Grandchildren Jordan (Nancy), Lacey (Vince), Ryan (Mindy), Jennifer, Derek (Natalie), Austin (Hayley), Brendon (Amy) and Great-Grandchildren; Dylan, Owen, Abigail, Gianna, Wesley, Landon, Cohen, Raiden, Cruz, Avaya, Ash, and Kai and her dear sisters Sylvia Ralph, Elinor Chypyha and Josie Brown as well as many extended family.

Grandma was predeceased by her beloved husband Glen in October 2016, her daughter Cheryl in April 2023 and numerous siblings and friends to whom she was so ready to be reunited with.
