GERTRUDE “TRUDY” PETERS
March 29, 1928 – November 1, 2024
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear mother Gertrude “Trudy” Peters, on November 1, 2024, with family at her side.
She leaves to mourn her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Winnipeg, Trinidad, London England and the United States.
Trudy was born on March 29, 1928 in San Juan, Trinidad to Thelma and Kenneth Webster. She was the third child in a family of six children. She would regale us with stories of growing up in Trinidad, where she got into many antics with her siblings. In 1955, she immigrated by herself to London, England, paving the way for her brothers to follow a few years later. She got married and had two children, Roger and Wendy. Together, her brothers’ families and hers lived in a big brownstone house, with each floor its own flat. It was fun-filled, wonderful chaos with the family under one roof as the cousins grew up.
In October 1968, Trudy was divorced and ready for a new adventure. Her brother Ken was a doctor in Winnipeg and encouraged her to join him. Several years later, her cousins Peter and Greg also came to Canada from Trinidad for education, and stayed at her house at 478 St. Mary’s Road. This house was a home to many “social functions”, with family and friends, most of whom referred to her as “Mom”.
Getting her own education, Trudy obtained her Medical Record Technician Certificate in 1971. Over her working years, she became the Medical Record Director at the Rehab Hospital, Selkirk General Hospital, and Municipal Hospital. In 1974, she taught a night course in Medical Terminology for Red River College, and continued her education, pursuing certificates in Hospital Departmental Management. She retired in 1988 at 60 years of age, and it was time for another adventure.
She moved to Sanford, Manitoba with her son’s family, living in an A-frame cabin and spent quality time with her granddaughter, Marley, and grandson Conor, who she instilled with the creative values and the love of reading. Trudy was a creative soul, with comprehensive skills in sewing, painting, and often pursued other artistic endeavours like metalworking and miniatures.
She eventually moved back into the city and lived in Appleton Estates in St. Vital, continuing to enjoy her retirement and looking after both of her grandchildren. She enjoyed walking, gardening, sewing, reading, and enjoyed when the family all got together and could loudly discuss whatever was the topic of the day. As she grew older, she moved to Sterling House, where she made new friendships, rekindled old ones, and enjoyed the staff support.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Sterling House for their kindness and support over the years, and the Bright Water Senior Living staff. A very special thank you to the staff at St. Boniface ER and the Palliative Care ward who provided her with the care, dignity and respect she deserved in her final days.
A celebration of life will be planned for late spring.
Trudy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Sending our deepest condolences from our family to yours. My mom, May Given, was Trudy's roommate for three weeks in the Victoria Hospital. During that time we got to know your mom and your wonderful family a little bit, and witness how supported and loved Trudy was by all of her family. Trudy was always so kind hearted and interested in our family, too. It was very clear that she had the most loving and kind heart, and that she was very thoughtful about others. We are so sorry for your loss, we can tell by the words you’ve written about her that she was so very much loved and she will be very missed. Thank you for being such a kind family, and for your support as we both shared the challenges of our beautiful mothers’ last days and weeks here with us. Take care, Wendy, Roger and family. Hugs from us

I met Trudy for the first time 15 years ago at her grandson Conor's 11th birthday party. We immediately took to each other and that set the tone for every interaction I had the pleasure of being around her throughout the years at various family events.
My sons Tevon & Torian also enjoyed being around Trudy and she was very kind to them.
Trudy I truly enjoyed the aura that emanated from you,.
Your spirit was strong, your laughter was big and I greatly enjoyed listening to you speak of parts of your childhood as I got to learn more about you.
I loved the way your entire being would light up with immense joy and pride whenever you spoke of Conor & Marley. It was very clear you deeply loved them both
In my last visit with you, you spoke lovingly of Wendy & Roger who were in London. You spoke of how much they looked after you and how fortunate you were to have them
You said Wendy was the strength you relied upon to push you to doing the things you knew you needed to but did not always have the will to.do so. You said you did not let Wendy know but that you truly appreciated her for it.
Trudy also spoke of Roger always visiting her and wss sure make sure she was always provided for. She said they would sit and talk.
It was very clear Trudy loved and missed you both while you were away. You were her heart.!
Trudy it was a pleasure having met you and getting to know you. You were an absolutely wonderful woman and will be greatly missed!

Trudy meant a lot to me for many reasons. To me, Trudy was as close to being my Mom as could be. After my own mother’s passing, Trudy provided to me a kind and maternal presence in her stead which I have always valued and always will.
I also recall that Trudy and my mother, Rachelle, had an enduring friendship that they both enjoyed. During their visits they would have long and lively conversations, mixed with laughter, where they would talk mother-to-mother and grandma to grandma about all of their experiences, and of course, about their grandchildren.
Trudy , as well, was my mother-in-law for many years, and proved to be supportive and kind to me for the duration. There were many family occasions full of merriment and animated discussions which Trudy enjoyed being a part of.
And yes, Trudy adored her grandchildren, and she was so immensely proud of them and who they had become as adults. I believe that the many hours she spent with them in their developing years were the greatest gift they could have received. I remain convinced that Conor gained immeasurably from his grandma’s care, love, and attention, and in many ways the attributes she fostered in him have grown to become defining parts of who he is today.
Finally, even as I moved on to my new life with Andrea and her boys, Trudy graciously accepted and cared about these new members of her “extended family” without hesitation
I have to say that my ongoing relationship with Trudy over the last almost twenty years would not have been possible without me continuing to be considered part of the Peters family. My sincere thanks to Wendy and Roger for including me and for “sharing” their Mom with me all these years.
For all of these things I am grateful.
May you rest in peace Mom.
With Love, Marc

Trudy, also known as "mom" by our group of friends was a wonderful woman full of kindness and compassion. She was also very creative and I really admired the many different ways she expressed herself by creating beautiful works of art, some of which I still have and treasure!
I have so many fond memories of her over the 50+ years but my favourite memories are just having some really good conversations with her upstairs while everyone else was downstairs partying.
"Mom" was loved by all and will be missed.
My heartfelt condolences to Wendy and Roger and all of the family.

My condolences to Roger & Wendy and their families! I remember when I was taking the Medical Record course at Red River College and my practicum was at Selkirk Hospital, Mrs Peter's & I would ride the bus from St. Mary's Road together for the two weeks I was there! She was a great instructor and role model! Such a lovely lady! RIP Mrs. Peters

Aunt Trudy left for London the year I was born.
So I only got to know her and my cousins Roger and Wendy when they moved to Winnipeg. She was a cool auntie. Who got me even though I am different.
She encouraged me in my art and enjoyed getting pieces from me. She was generous enough to share her art with me too and I will cherish those gifts even more, now that she is gone.
She will be missed by me, my husband Dale who she welcomed into our family with open arms, and my sister Wendy,
Goodbye beautiful soul, we love you with all our hearts.

Our dear and much loved Auntie Trudy was very special and will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
I remember going downstairs to play with my cousins Roger and Wendy and to spend time with Trudy when we all shared that house in East Finchley, they were very happy times.
And I have many wonderful memories of our visits to Canada when we were so welcomed by Trudy and all our Canadian family.
And time we spent in London together in later years. I remember so many great things about Trudy, her creativity, humour, warmth and kindness to all of us and most of all love,
Rest in peace, beautiful Auntie Trudy xxx

I remember the day Roger came to join us at Glenwood school like it was yesterday. Mom Peters welcomed us all into her home at any time of any day whether it was one of the frequent and memorable "social" events or just a very small gathering in mid afternoon.
If you have met either Roger or Wendy but did not have a chance to meet Mom you will know just how special a woman she was.
Thank you for making our lives better. Rest in Peace.

My beautiful & amazingly lovely auntie Trudy, I was also very young when we all lived together in London. I have few memories of our time together, as I was also very young, but always remember the many times we would chat together on video chats with Wendy & we would always speak at Christmas. I have wonderful memories of when she came to London with Wendy, Roger & both their families, Trudy stayed at our flat & what a joy it was to hang out & spend time together, I remember her buying me a foot stool due to the fact that I would often fall asleep in my chair & funnily enough I still do all these years later & still have the stool. I will forever cherish the memories & time we spent together, our many chats over the years. Auntie Trudy was such an amazing & beautiful soul, one of the special ones in my life & all of our lives. You will be so missed by many, I will cherish my memories of you & hold you in my heart & soul forever.
Rest in Eternal Peace Auntie Trudy!
Bless you.

Great memories of my beloved auntie. Although I was just a baby and a little young to remember much of our time living together in London, when I was in Winnipeg I stayed with Trudy in the A frame. She gave me her bed to sleep in (whilst she slept on the setee) and would make me lovely breakfasts every morning. Always enjoyed the moments we spent together In London and Winnipeg. A beautiful soul and shining light in our family. Will be missed by all in this earthly realm but will always be with us in spirit.
Rest in Peace Beautiful Lady!
Bless
X
