EVELYN GRACE KOCH PETERSON

Teacher, avid traveler, and life-long learner, our mom, sister, friend, colleague, and neighbor passed away on December 9 at the age of 77. Evelyn will be deeply missed by her children Susan (Nevil Stephens) and Gregory (Christie and children Hunter and Emma).

Evelyn was born March 26, 1946, the fourth child of the late Lester and Alice (Nahrgang) Koch. She grew up on a farm near New Hamburg, Ontario along with her nine siblings who survive: Earl (Lucille), Harold (Grace), Florence (Fred) Michelin, Eleanor Snyder, Russell (Hazel), Norman (Gwen), Shirley Henley, Kenneth (Lorrie), Allan (Julia). She was a special aunt to her many nieces and nephews and their families.

Evelyn’s teaching career spanned 35 years, beginning as an intrepid twenty-two year old in Togo, West Africa, and ending at Rosslyn Academy in Kenya, East Africa.

During the intervening years she raised her children, built her career as a successful French and English teacher at various schools in Winnipeg, including 15 years at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, participated in church and community activities, travelled, and made many friends along the way.

After her retirement she continued teaching, this time in adult literacy and academic writing and tutoring. She was passionate about people and enjoyed keeping busy with social and volunteer activities.

Evelyn had a passion for travel. She visited over 35 countries and was especially fond of France. She loved to practice her language skills wherever she went.

Evelyn was not afraid to embrace new challenges. She taught us all a great deal about making choices and seeking serenity. Her determination to regain her footing after treatment of ovarian cancer in 2019 was awe-inspiring.  She so appreciated the ongoing support from her family and close friends during her illness.

A dear friend to everyone she met, Evelyn will live on in our hearts. “Cherish those you love” were her parting words in her final visits.

A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held on Friday, December 15 at 11:00 am at Charleswood Mennonite Church, 699 Haney Street, Winnipeg, MB. A livestream of the service will be available above, or by clicking here

Donations in her memory may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or the Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba.

Evelyn's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I volunteered with Evelyn at CCMB for just over a year. She trained me and made me feel truly appreciated whenever I saw her. We frequently discussed our travel plans and favourite books, and she would tell me about her time as a teacher. She was someone who I thoroughly looked forward to seeing every week on Thursdays. You are so deeply missed Evelyn ❤

Evelyn will always be in my heart. Her grace, strength, compassion, intelligence, generosity, sense of humour and so many other qualities were an example for me and for so many others. I loved our Thursday night wine and snack evenings where we talked about everything: books,  puzzles and language apps we exchanged, trips taken or in the planning, our mutual love of France, politics, movies, our kids, human intricacies…We also laughed so much especially when we attended the annual WAG World’s best ads screenings or at our Beginner Italian classes or our Pickle ball games at the St. James Civic Centre. Miss you Evelyn! Adieu! Hope you’re having fun in your next life. 💕

Floor 23 is very quiet without Evelyn. I met Evelyn in the Fall of 2022 as she gathered together new and old tenants from our floor. She was so warm and welcoming that one couldn't  help but gravitate towards her. I am so sad that she has passed away as I would have liked to get to know her better. My sincere condolences to her family. Isle❤

I will miss her cheery greeting in the hallways of our apartment building, her infectious laugh as we shared stories  and positive outlook of life even when it was tough.  She inspired me!  May the memories carry you as you mourn her loss.

I met Evelyn through the Goal (adult literacy program). This is what I wrote on the day she passed: God is always at work in our lives. I had not seen my dear friend, in many ways mentor and past boss since 2018. Once I moved back I reached out to her and was informed by a mutual colleague that she (my past boss) had limited time left (sudden news). I had the privilege of visiting her one last time and it was such a special visit- that I hold close to my heart.  There are some people that you meet that truly touch your life. Evelyn was that kind of person; her laugh filled up a room, she had that amazing humour and always encouraged me. She was also an adventurous spirit who was a world traveler and loved her children/family. She was always patient, kind and giving back. Although I cannot find many photos-this is our recent/last one together. I am happy I could say good bye.  The angels welcomed you home today. 💗

My life touched Evelyn's so briefly - not nearly enough - she was suffering from Neuropathy in her feet and I have nerve damage in my lower legs. She shared some of the things she was doing to strengthen her feet and to walk better - she encouraged me with her upbeat and positive attitude. I wish I could have had more time with her - and gotten to know her better. She was an inspiration!!!! My sincere condolences to her family and friends

I met Evelyn through my pilates  She was  using a walker and in shoes she didn’t  think were very stylish…we worked outside in bare feet.  She was an egar student.  her  goal was to go to Portugal  and wear sexier shoes!!   She was an absolute delight to work with.. we laughed a lot and  she was easy to teach.  I am so thrilled that She  reached  her goal and made her dream come true… She was so thrilled… My love and heart go out to all her family and friends.

I met Evelyn at the Goal Program. She was my boss and mentor. Immediately I though what a remarkable, gregarious woman. I enjoyed her smile and infectious laugh. We remained good friends over the years and shared good coffee and conversation. Evelyn was my guiding light over the past year as we both fought this challenging disease. Her resilience and determination inspired me to keep moving forward every day. Evelyn is one in a million and I'm so fortunate to have had her in my life. I will miss you my dear friend. My heart felt condolences to her family.  Shannon Hocken

Not afraid to embrace new challenges- so true. On our first France trip together in 1990, she drove a manual shift nine passenger mini van full of students through Paris and 4000 km as we tootled around France!  A caring, thoughtful, kind and dedicated colleague, travel partner and friend. So blessed every time you laughed your way into my life!

Every once in a while you meet someone and just wish you had known them your whole life. That’s how I felt meeting Evelyn and that feeling grew stronger the longer I knew her. The way she bubbled over with happiness and enthusiasm and a true love for life were simply infectious. And you just knew there was a wealth of wisdom hidden behind her words. She had a gift for uplifting. Our little grandson’s eyes lit up every time we met in the pool, as he braced himself for her teasingly cheerful “FARLEY! Are you here AGAIN?” The way she had with people was wonderful. I’m sure she touched so many lives in a meaningful and memorable way during her career. I’ll miss you, Evelyn and I’ll always wish we had met sooner, but I’m very thankful for the time that I did know you.

Evelyn was a bright and shining star. Her wonderful sense of humour and her contagious laughter is a memory that I will never forget. Her kindness, advocacy and her caring for her adult literacy classes was foremost in her mind. Evelyn worked for me at the Elmwood GOAL Adult Literacy Program. She was a wonderful teacher and always celebrated her students successes. She was a cat lover, a craftsperson and loved her family. I will miss you Evelyn, you were a very special person in my life. ❤❤❤

We have known Evelyn for decades — as a colleague at Westgate (Werner) and then at Rosslyn (both of us). She became a dear friend. And then eventually we moved into the apartment building that Evelyn called home. As neighbours we gave each other space but also support. A perfect arrangement.  We have laughed and cried together. What a privilege it has been to learn so many things from and with her! We will miss Evelyn’s knock at our door, our impromptu visits, our shared history. Sending her family our condolences.  Adelia and Werner Wiens

I was an AP English student of Evelyn’s at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate. I still have crystal clear memories of how she encouraged me, challenged me, and shared her love of literature in what became one of favourite courses. I think of her teachings often even now, 20 years later. My condolences to her family and loved ones. She was special to so many people.

I shared many happy times with Evelyn but what I took away from.these was her spirit and strength. She made good out of bad and found joy in pain. What an inspiration to me. Thank you Evelyn!
