MICHAEL “MIKEEY” PETERSON

September 17, 1997- January 9, 2021

Michael Armand Peterson passed away suddenly on Jan 9, 2021 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  He will be forever missed by his mom and dad; Kris and Bev Peterson, and his little sister,  Marley  (Mat).  Michael was fortunate to have grandparents; Dale and Phyllis Hokanson, and Anton and Valdine Peterson.  He had a large extended family of aunts and uncles, and cousins who loved him.  His loss will be felt by the many friends he had.  He loved to meet new people and made friends of all ages wherever he went.

Michael grew up in Hnausa and Riverton.  He acted in the CTV movie “ELIJAH” when he was 9 years old, and at the age of 10, he was cast in the movie “BILLY”.  He attended high school in Selkirk when our family moved to St. Andrews.  After graduation, he went on to study Human Resource Management at Red River College.  This past year Michael had moved to Winnipeg, where he had worked in loss prevention and sales.

Michael loved to travel, and had been on many family vacations within Canada and the U.S.   Michael’s favourite trip was a road trip with his dad after graduation.  They travelled to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco where his dad surprised him with a tour of Google headquarters.

Michael loved nature and the outdoors.  He grew up swimming in Lake Winnipeg, and our family enjoyed many camping trips to Hecla and Steeprock with his cousins.  At home on the farm, he could be found by the fire pit, dogs and cats at his side.  Recently Michael had mourned the loss of his loyal feline buddy “Virgo”.

Michael’s interest were varied and vast, he excelled at creating video projects for school and for personal use. Michael’s social activism included leading an action group that lobbied LSD and the provincial government to place cameras on the side of school buses.  The high school project he was most proud of saw Michael invite the late Elijah Harper to LSRCSS to discuss social injustice and racism to over a 100 students and staff.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Asita Mehta for her lifelong care of Michael.  She was his staunch advocate and he loved her dearly.

Cremation has occurred and due to the pandemic, a celebration of life will be delayed until later this year.  In the meantime, Michael's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. They also encourage the sharing of photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Bruce Oake Memorial Fund, PO Box 61084 Grant Park, Winnipeg, MB R3M 3X8 or a charity of your choice.

Micheal was amazing young man. I remember when he came to the dental office where I worked. Always full of joy and such a great supporter of his sister. No words can take the pain of his passing away. But his memory will live on in the hearts of many. Hugs  Bonnie

My heart sunk at this loss 💓 I became friends with Mikey while managing the portrait studio in Walmart.  He very quickly became a friend and the highlight of my work day.  He truly embodied this welcoming and kind presence, which  was undoubtedly must have been the lead to many friendships.  He was a beautiful soul who made an imprint. I feel very fortunate to have met him.  It felt important to me to share how highly he spoke to me about his parents and family and you could tell that he felt well supported and loved.   I think that was really modeled by the type of person he was. Even though I do not know his family directly please know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers, same to all that is grieving.  Please be kind to yourselves at this difficult time.

Jeannette first met Michael when she was hired to meet the parents of children entering Kindergarten. Her first impression was what a kind, gentle and lovable child. Her heart fell in love with him immediately. We shared a bond when she subbed in some of his classes. She was so happy to share a big hug with him at Selkirk Walmart. We were heartbroken when we heard of his passing. The video tribute to Michael made Jeannette cry. Rest in peace, Michael. You hold a special place in our hearts. Condolences to all of Michael's loving family, he will be missed by all. ❤ Jeannette & Lloyd Roche
