WILFRED DONALD “DONNIE” PHILLIPS

It is with great sadness the family of Don Phillips announce his sudden passing at home on January 10, 2023 at the age of 80.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Cheryle, daughter Loree (Frank) Waterhouse, son Travis (Nadine) Phillips; grandchildren Colby & Cailin Waterhouse and Julia Phillips; great-granddaughter Coraline Waterhouse; sister Bev (Bill)Wilson; brother-in-law Rick (Joan) Wainwright; sisters-in-law Janet Phillips & Betty Wainwright and many nieces, nephews and friends.  Don was predeceased by his brother Bill, stepdad Bert Caskey and mother Jean.

The oldest of three children, Don was born in Souris, MB and later moved to MacGregor, MB.  As a youth he enjoyed playing football and riding motorcycles.  He was an avid reader who believed a book could be enjoyed over and over.  As a young adult, he settled on a career in Autobody Repair and attended Brandon Community College. He took great pride in his work, always the perfectionist.  Every job got his very best, but his passion was working on antique automobiles.  He was also well known for his custom motorcycle gas tanks.

Don and Cheryle were married August 2nd, 1969 and after a short stint in Neepawa, returned to Brandon to raise their family. Don’s hobbies included archery, for which he won many awards in competition and hunting, though he spent more time admiring the animals than hunting them.  Artistically inclined and skilled with his hands, Don kept himself busy crafting everything from bows & arrows to candle lanterns.  Anyone who knew Don though, knows that his passion really lay in his love of history, particularly early Canadian history.  He was able to bring to life this love through his participation with the Manitoba Muzzle loaders Brandon Chapter.  As one of the original members of the club, Don spent many a happy weekend camping with his family while attending club activities, particularly enjoying the re-enactments the club put on for Pine Fort Days.  It was during this very special weekend each year that he could share his passion and knowledge with the public.

Don was very proud of his children, grandchildren and the latest member of his family his great-granddaughter.  He will be greatly missed by all.  At Don’s request, his memory will be cherished privately.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice.
