DENIS JOSEPH PILLOUD

February 9, 1948 - January 1, 2021

It is with great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Denis Pilloud of St. Claude, Manitoba, on January 1, 2021, at the age 72 years.

Denis was predeceased by his father Edouard; mother Valentine (née LeGarff); siblings, Roland and Roger; sister-in-law Claudette (née Le Cunff); and brother-in-law Denis Lacroix. He is survived by his sisters, Yvonne Lacroix and Denise Pilloud. Also left to mourn his loss his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many, many great friends.

In his early younger days, Denis worked at Versatile in Winnipeg for many years. His work would take him away from time to time.  Even though he found himself as far north as Flin Flon, Manitoba to work in the mines and as far south as Hobart, Oklahoma to Custom Combine with his good friends the Bruneau’s, he always found his way back home to St. Claude. Farming was his life, and was in his blood. He first farmed with his dad on the family farm, eventually taking it over. Later on, Denis joined the Bruneau Farm family and farmed with them, which he loved. His great nephews and great nieces were lucky to have had many opportunities to ride along with Denis on the machinery over the years.

Denis was well known in the community for his quick humour, his willingness to help and the jokes. So many jokes. It didn’t matter if you were 5 years old or 90 years old, he always had a joke ready. The same rang true when it came to having a drink. You could be 18 or 90, Denis was always ready and willing to have a drink with you.  Denis was also known for his generosity, and he was especially generous for his infamous cabbage rolls. He loved to share them with friends and family. They will be missed as well.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of Denis' friends for their many words of kindness and support during this difficult time. A special thank you to Maurice Rouire, Claude Bruneau and Ron Green for their care, concern and compassion for Denis on January 1.

Rest in peace Denis, you will be greatly missed but we are comforted with the thought you are reunited with loved ones. We are also sure that your good friend, Jack Forbes was waiting for you at the gates with a rye.

A celebration of Denis’ life will be announced at a later date, when COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed. In the meantime, Denis’ family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

He is gone

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived

You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

When we moved to St.Claude in 1989, Denis was one of the first locals I met and became friends with. Enjoyed his humor, quick wit and kindness. And who can forget those beautiful blue eyes, that twinkled when he was being devlish?  So sorry to hear of his illness and passing, sympathy to family and all that knew him.

Our deepest sympathy to Denis' family and friends. There was never a dull moment when Denis would come through the door. We were never sure who he'd be teasing, none of us were spared. So we'd try hard to have a good comeback for him, not wanting to disappoint him and we new he would be back for more.  Thank-you Denis for those memorable moments.

I had gone for a walk with my kids this past summer, while walking by, we noticed that Denis was in his garden. My 4 year old says “Hi Denis, I really like your tomatoes!” After talking for a while, we left with handfuls of tomatoes and cucumbers, even though I said no many times!  Definitely going to miss you Denis!

Best story was when Denis had given us his famous cabbage rolls and we couldn't believe how great they were!  In disbelief, I asked his mom "How much help did you give him?"  She said she would "stay right out of his way when he made the 'mess' - it was all his cooking."   This was at Christmas time one year, but we had closed the restaurant and gone to Alberta for a whole week.  Upon returning, knowing he would ask how we liked his cabbage rolls, we had a great laugh while waiting for him to come in for coffee.      We had written on the menu board, Daily Special, CABBAGE ROLLS, Half price!!!          Of course they weren't his but we allowed the charade to continue all day.  We'll miss Denis, and could  easily fill a small novel with stories. A poem written for his 64th birthday from his friends at Mama Lou's Encore: Most often he's rising at the crack of dawn; Can't watch Canada AM, it's no longer on. Days usually include intermittent coffee breaks, 'cause many consecutive workdays guarantee a few aches. We hear extreme pining for a piece of cherry pie; "Can never get enough", he laments with a sigh.... He is blessed with those eyebrows resembling a lynx; spouting nature knowledge 'bout the sex lives of minks. At Blitz he's the banker, overseeing the pot; Winning is fine - a good loser he is not! Sure great with numbers without hardly thinking; Becomes quite rude and sharp-tongued when he is drinking. For winning or splitting pots, he must have the knack; But heavy quarters lower his pants, "Oh no, we see crack!" You're unique and we're happy to call you our friend; Have a wonderful 64th birthday, Denis.   The End.

Sympathy to the family.    Remembering Denis always brings a smile.   Roaming the country in his white impala with the gang was always good for a laugh.   Always knew when we were stuck Denis would  go to "sleep."   So much fun.   Thanks for the friendship.

Our sympathies to Denis's family. I worked with Denis when he worked with Versatile. I gave him a ride to work for a couple of years. I dropped off my daughter every day and Denis always had a black licorice lozenge for her. She still remarks about this when ever she passes the apartment on Stafford. Denis was a great guy he will be missed.

I have many great memories of working with Denis at Versatile.  Everyday was exciting.  One time Denis had sold his boss half a pig, awhile later his boss upset him so Denis started a rumour that the pig he had sold him had drowned in the dugout before he butchered it.  This rumour was untrue but made sure his boss would hear about it.  The guy threw away all the pork and never ate pork again. Rest in peace Denis. Claude du Bourg.

My sympathies to Denis’s family. Denis will for sure not be forgotten anytime soon! Still remember meeting him at Philippot Shop Easy Foods when I started working there right after high school and quickly got to learn that you had to come up with some good quick comebacks to Denis remarks and jokes because he had no shortage of them in the back of his mind. Denis was definitely a person that grows on someone and after a while I really looked forward to the next time I’d see Denis come in to the store or see him in town to hear what he had on his mind, was up to that day or one of his many jokes. Always a good laugh even when sometimes he had his super serious face on. That face never lasted long until he cracked a grin and twinkle in his eye would come out again.  RIP Denis!

My deepest sympathies to Yvonne and Denise and family. These past few days have made me remember the times I spent in Denis company. Never a dull time always full of fun. Denis taught me how to be a friend - accept those around you and never judge them. This is a hard truth that I have come to learn. Thank you my friend - RIP until we meet again.
