STEVEN PIND

March 22, 1960 – November 4, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Steve Pind on November 4, 2023 at the age of 63.

Steve will be deeply missed by his wife Mariko, his children Meredith, Adrienne (Jeff), and Nolan, former wife and friend Molly, siblings David (Angela), Kevin (Sharon), Maureen (Bill), Scott (Shaylene), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Pamela, and Niels.

Steve was born in Toronto, ON on March 22, 1960. He lived outside of Lakefield, ON for much of his childhood farming corn and raising and showing cattle. He attended university at Brock, Queen’s, and University of Toronto, where he met and married Molly.  Soon after, Meredith was born. The family moved to San Diego, CA when Steve started working at Scripps Research Institute.  There they welcomed Adrienne. In 1996 he began working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the University of Manitoba. Steve and Mariko met, and then were married in 2007. Together, they welcomed Nolan into their life, and the family was complete.

Upon his retirement in 2013, Steve dedicated much of his time to looking after Nolan.  His children were the centre of his universe.  He was immensely proud of each of them, and enjoyed spending time with them. In recent years he enjoyed sharing his love of hockey and what he learned as a goalie with Nolan. He loved to go camping, travelling, bicycling, and listening to music, particularly Neil Young.  He had many hobbies including repairing stereos, woodworking, and building bikes. Steve will be remembered for his honesty, his sense of humour, and his unconditional love for his family. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he also had a soft spot for his dogs and cats.

Cremation has already taken place. Per his wishes, a private celebration of life will be held for close family members.

Steve was truly generous and compassionate, and helped anyone in need. He would have loved nothing more than for others to give back to the community in the same spirit. If desired, donations in memory of Steve can be made to the Toba Centre for Children and Youth, the Main Street Project, or any charity of your choice.

Steve's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

I thought you might enjoy seeing this picture of Steve at work in the Department of Biochemistry & Medical Genetics in 2006. He was a great colleague and friend to me- I was really lucky to have had him as a friend all of these years. My love and sympathy to all of you- Mariko, Nolan, Adrienne, Meredith, Molly and the rest of Steve's family.
