MARGARET PITT

June 18, 1954- December 13, 2021

It is with heavy hearts and immense sadness that we announce the passing our dearly beloved wife, mother, nana, sister, and friend Margaret Pitt. She passed away peacefully and bravely surrounded by her family on the afternoon of December 13th, 2021, at Deer Lodge Centre.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her husband Keith Pitt; her daughters Amanda and Michelle; her grandsons Keighan and Kwnylen; her brother Albert as well as the innumerable family and friends whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her parents Eileen and Luke Tierney.

Margaret was born on June 18th, 1954, in Dublin, Ireland to Eileen and Luke; the second and last-born child. She grew up with an incredibly close-knit extended family who were more like one big nuclear family. She was lucky enough to form a sisterly bond to her cousins Brenda and Marie that continued all through their lives. She took great pride in her Irish heritage, even after she moved half-way across the world Ireland was always her home and one of the most important aspects of what made her, her.  Forty years after she left home if she spoke to anyone back in Dublin her accent would start creeping back in which never failed to amuse those around her.

Margaret was a rebellious, mischievous, and kind girl throughout her school years, and created wonderful connections with her girlfriends that she maintained friendships with right until her passing. At the tender age of 18 Margaret took a leap of faith and moved to Sydney Australia, which was incredibly brave considering the only person she knew there was her bother Albert, and her sense of direction was so bad that people joked she could get lost in her own backyard.  In Sydney she got a job as a law firm receptionist and moved into an apartment on the beach. While in Sydney she had many adventures including meeting her first husband Gordon who convinced her to leave the sun and sand of Bondi Beach for his hometown; the white tundra of Winnipeg. In 1977 they arrived and one year later they had their first child Michelle, followed three years later by another daughter Amanda. As she grew up Amanda also inherited her mom’s love of travel, and they were able to take a few international trips together to Europe and the Caribbean.  Margaret spent most of her adult years driving a school bus for River East School Division but one of Margaret’s greatest roles in life was her life as a foster parent which was her passion for over 20 years. Margaret spent every summer camping and swimming in Beausejour, first with her children and eventually with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Margaret had copious interests but her favorite thing in the world was to spend time with friends talking and laughing, especially over a few cups of strong coffee.

In June 2011 Margaret married the love of her life Keith after meeting at a bbq, and together they embarked on a journey of adventure and love. They took motorcycle trips across both Canada and the US, crisscrossed across her home country of Ireland, walked the white sand beaches of Mexico and Cuba, explored Australia as well as so many other experiences big and small. Whether they were kissing the Blarney Stone upside down and backward or just riding their bikes in their neighborhood everyday together was a fun filled adventure fun of love.

Margaret was the most generous, loving, and adventurous spirit who will be greatly missed by all those who were lucky enough to be part of her story. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a service will be held in her honor. Margaret’s family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. To Margaret’s family- I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I knew Margaret as a foster parent and worked with her for 6 years. I always loved going to her home for coffee and cookies, and marveled at how clean her house always was regardless of how many kids were in it! One of my favourite memories was coming to her home to see the reveal of the “dream room” project for a young lady who she fostered. Margaret was a wonderful human being and will be very missed.

I worked with Margaret for many years when she started fostering for MYS. She was always a pleasure to be around- always chatting and happy. We used to wrap up our meetings and then have another extended chat at her door when I was leaving. We’d chuckle about that every time! I was so sorry to hear of her passing and send my condolences to all of her family.

Sending my deepest sympathy to Keith and Amanda. Margaret and I were school friends in Loreto Primary and Secondary Schools in Dublin. We met when we were five, got up to lots of mischief and had many great adventures together. We both left Ireland but met a few times in Dublin during our adult years and had many telephone conversations and text messages over the last few years. We put the world to rights, went down Memory Lane, laughed about our childhood escapades and more recently talked about her illness. I was in awe of her great courage and strength. She was inspirational.  Will remember you with love Margaret. Til we meet again, Mary Woods
