It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of Jeffrey John Plantje, 61, of Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Jeff was born on March 25, 1965 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to John & Penny Plantje. Jeff was a loving partner, step-father and brother, a loyal friend and a proud resident of Winnipeg. He was known for his strong work ethic, kind heart and loving nature. He had a vibrant spirit and loved cooking, gardening, or cheering on his favorite teams. He could light up a room with his personality, quick wit and storytelling, or confound you with his large vocabulary that had some scratching their heads to figure out what he had just said, and was always ready to help anyone in need. If you had a problem he would happily help solve it if he could or answer any questions that were thrown his way, and if he didn't know the answer he would definitely look into it for you. He was young at heart and it showed in his boyish humor, and occasional horrible dad joke.
Jeff was born in Winnipeg, but spent many years as a child in Alberta before returning to Winnipeg at the age of 16. He completed high school at J.H. Bruns, and proceeded to do both a Bachelor of Arts and a law degree at the University of Manitoba.
Jeff had a profound love of the outdoors, and loved golfing, playing slow pitch with the Maniax, wandering the dog parks with Sara, Cass and the kids, and even hiking when the occasion presented itself. He loved to travel and had expressed the want in recent months to do more of it. He enjoyed gardening and was creating what he called his oasis in the back yard where he could be found on a Sunday afternoon napping under a tree with Sara close by. He loved to cook and bake and these are things he has passed on to Cass's kids. He enjoyed his monthly poker night and his fantasy football, and fantasy hockey with friends. He was trying to get back to yoga and the gym in the hopes of returning to playing ball next summer.
Over the last 8 years he had fallen into the roll of step-dad to Cass's kids, who even though they are predominantly adults embraced him happily as part of their lives and family. He was always up for helping with things like income tax, university applications, resumes and reading over assignments or just listening to the kids talk about whatever they were into at the time. He attended Parade nights at cadets, football games, Elli's productions for school or Fringe festival, and was extremely honoured to attend their graduations and let them know how extremely proud he was of them. He encouraged them to reach for their dreams even if they felt they were unattainable at the time and there was never such a thing as a stupid question even if it had been asked more than once.
He is survived by his common-law spouse Cassandra Suppes and her children Jose, Elli, Brenden, Liam and Imriel, his son Dylan Glanfield, and his sister Jill (Dan) Unruh of Edmonton, Alberta, as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents John & Penny Plantje. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and unforgettable memories.
A Celebration of Jeff's life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026 from 1:30-3:30pm at the Belgium Club located at 407 Provencher Blvd in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to an animal rescue of your choosing or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
