Wally Plishka
WALTER "WALLY" PLISHKA
August 29, 1940 - May 13, 2018
Wally passed away peacefully in the Health Science Centre on May 13, 2018, with his family at his side at the age of 77 years.
He is survived by his wife Audrey Plishka; sons Art (Melody) Plishka and Mel (Janice) Plishka; daughter Brenda (Denis) Bernier; seven grandchildren Andrew, Chantal (Gary), Eric (Catherine), Alex (Jennie), Nick, Maggie, and Mikayla; one sister Suzie Hudson (Rick Payment); brothers Dean (Lori), Joe, Victor, George (Bev), Bill (Adele), and James, and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his parents Walter and Annie, brother Colin Carlson, sister Barb Richardson.
Dad was born on August 29, 1940 in Fisher Branch, Manitoba. He met his wife, Audrey, in 1959. They were married in 1962 and moved to Winnipeg. Over the course of several years, Wally held several jobs including selling windows, pumping gas and auto mechanic. Dad left Winnipeg for a brief time just before his first son, Art, was born to move to Winkler, working for his Uncle Roy running the local hotel and bar. The call of the “big city” lured him back to Winnipeg, where he worked two jobs to provide for his growing family as the second bundle of joy, Brenda, arrived. After renting a few homes, Walter and Audrey bought their first and only home in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood and along came bundle of joy number three, Melvin.
Dad was passionate about farming and tried his hand at it in the early 1980’s. Although he didn’t continue with it, he was always there to help out his brother Bill during harvest and seeding, climbing up on to the tractor until just a few years ago.
Walter started working for Manitoba Hydro in 1973 as a heavy-duty mechanic and spent 13 years working up north at the Jenpeg generating station. He retired at age 63, after working there for 30 years.
Dad loved to watch his sons playing hockey and attended all their games. He also truly enjoyed watching his daughter Brenda tap dancing and playing baton. Wally and his brothers bonded during hunting season, spending hours in the bush waiting for the elusive buck to show up.
Although Dad will be sadly missed by all who knew him, we are comforted in the knowledge that he is now pain free and unencumbered to pursue all his favourite hobbies and activities.
The family would like to thank the staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their constant and loving care. We would also like to thank the nursing staff at the Health Sciences Centre for the care they gave us as well as our Dad in his last few days.
A celebration of Wally’s life will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).
