NORMAN JOSEPH REMEDIOS

November 9, 1945 - August 15, 2021

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dearest Norman aka “Stormin Norman” on Sunday, August 15, 2021, in the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 75.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Cassandra, daughter Cynthia Pearl (Christian) and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Remy and Crosby Taylor. He is survived by his sisters Pamela Chen (Paul), Mildred Barber and Brother Rudy Remedios and numerous nieces and nephews and dear cousins across the globe. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanislaus and Pearl Remedios, his brother Stanley and his sister in law Clarissa. His presence will be sorely missed by his family, friends, neighbours and all who knew him.

Norman was born in Calcutta, India on November 9, 1945. After graduating from Mrs. Curry’s Day School, he found employment at Phelps & Company, a men’s tailoring business where he was employed until he immigrated to Toronto, Canada in December, 1969. As a new immigrant he had some difficulty in procuring employment, but finally got hired by American Standard in their Inventory Control Department. In the Fall of 1974 Norman and Cassandra decided to head west to Winnipeg to start a brand new life and family. He decided to join The Winnipeg Transit as a bus operator. He worked a lot of various shifts at the start, but finally was able to pick his shift and bus route and even got weekends off. He put in his 30 years of service retiring with a full pension.

Norman and Cassandra married in 1970. Their 50th Wedding Anniversary was celebrated in January, 2020 on the Sapphire Princess on a 14 day trip to South East Asia. This was followed up by a six week holiday in Australia visiting family and friends.

Norm’s passions were music, sports and travel. He was an ardent collector of records both the long playing and the 45’s as well as box CD’s and DVD sets. This passion led to us attending various concert venues when his favourite artist/ musician played in town. Norm was an excellent dancer and everyone loved the way he jived. He loved tennis, soccer and golf, but his passion was badminton, which he enjoyed with his buddies at the Greendell Community Centre. His love of travel took him “downunder” on at least ten occasions and various trips across the globe to England, Spain, India, New Zealand, Fiji, South East Asia, the Caribbean, Alaska, across Canada and the United States including Hawaii.

We would like to give our sincerest thanks and gratitude to Dr. Michael Peter Sochocki and Dr. Khalid as well as all the other dedicated and compassionate nurses and staff on GH 6 namely Crystal, Debbie, Kate, Laine and Tamara - Speech Pathologist And GH4 namely Ryan and Darryl for making Norman’s last few hours comfortable and peaceful.

In keeping with Norman’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral will be held. Norm’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

In memory of Norm, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation Of Manitoba and Siloam Mission.

Dearest Cassy, Cynthia, Christian, Remy and Crosby. My deepest condolences for the loss of your Husband, Dad and Grandpa. Norm/Normie once again my hearts feels so empty. Norm and Glenn were first cousins but they both referred to each other as Bro’s. Cassy and Normie made a road trip with his new red SUV and many others to join us for our New Years Dance. I will hold our memories to India for a AI reunion,  vacation January 2020 a 14 days cruise on Princess to Asia and the 3 of our extended to meet our Remedios family in Melbourne. Cassy mentioned Norm’s passion for music, sports, travel and thumbs for his smooth dancing style. Norm love I will miss our jiving, till we meet again and dance again. The video brought back so many memories. Rest In Peace Cuz. ❤❤❤

It was shocking to hear about the sad passing of Norman. I came to know him through my very good friend, his wife Cassandra, who I met at Brooke Bond India, Kolkata, and who worked along with me for a very long time over the years. Cassy and I were best of friends till she immigrated to Canada. I met Norman personally only till a few years ago when both he and Cassy visited Kolkata, India.  He was a thorough gentleman and I instantly took a liking to him. May the good Lord keep him in his loving arms and may Cassy and the family find the strength to bear this great loss. Rest in peace Norman.

I never had the good fortune to meet Norman , but the fact that he was sharing life with Cassy❤, my bosom  friend from childhood days, made him a special person .  Before he was a good person ... Now he is a divine presence  .🙏👍.

I met Norm a number of years ago when he showed up to play badminton at Greendell one afternoon and enjoyed immensely the time we had to play either together or in opposition....he was keenly competitive and brought a new level of competitiveness to our group....I was always impressed that he came, without exception, with a variety of matching shorts and tops...we will immense him and sincerest condolences to his family...from the history in his obituary, Norm lived a full life in his short 75 years with us....Allan Webster

I met Norman and Cassandra at the AI Reunion in New Zealand in 2021.  I could not believe my eyes at the annual ball. I had never seen such fancy footwork.  I met them again at other reunions. Norman was always impeccably dressed and a perfect gentleman. I went to an American school with his cousins Jennifer and Colin Remedios in Gaya, India 1955. He will be sorely missed. Bert Payne

I met Norm through work - he is one amazing man - we became friends and he always had good advice.  The one thing I knew about Norm is that he always had my back - he would never allow anyone to say anything bad about anyone - I will miss his visits.  God Bless you Norm and may god give peace and healing to Cassandra and his family

I met Norm the first time I started playing badminton at Greendell in October 2012. He was very welcoming and respectful, always. I admired the dignity and respect he brought to the sport of badminton at Greendell. When he was on the court, Norm was all business. I enjoyed playing with or opposite him  because in either situation I always  learned something from him. He loved food, although you couldn't tell that from his trim build. He would always give me tips where I could buy the best East Indian cuisine. Our trips to India in December 2018 coincided but we travelled to different parts of the country. We both brought back many memories which we shared with each other.  Norm, you'll be missed. May your soul rest in Peace  - John Chand
