TAMI RUTH RIFFEL

May 24, 1967 – July 24, 2024

With her family at her side, Tami passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on July 24, 2024.

Tami was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Heather Riffel. She is survived by her brother Rob (Wendy); and nephew Mike (Katie); grand niece Isla; and Evan (Emily). She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Tami was born and raised in Elmwood where she attended Lord Selkirk Elementary, Elmwood Junior High and Elmwood High Schools.

While growing up Tami enjoyed her summers with family and friends at Netley Creek.

Tami worked for Manitoba Public Insurance for over 33 years. She started out as Data Control Clerk and at the time of her passing she supervised the Benefit Administration Unit in the Personal Injury Department. During her time at MPI Tami made numerous lasting friendships and was respected by all who worked with her. She could always be counted on to instigate a prank now and then to share a laugh with those she worked with.

Anyone who knew Tami knows how much she loved her fur babies Tommy, Bradley, Archie, Mimi, and Lucky. She loved them dearly. She was also passionate about cats in general, having fostered numerous cats until they found their forever homes. She volunteered with the Winnipeg Lost Cat Assistance group, Feral Friends Sanctuary, and the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Special thanks to Tami’s close friends Sonja and Ken Steen and Joanne Keith for always being there for her. Tami and Sonja were like sisters from the time they met in elementary school to the day she passed. Joanne was Tami’s special friend from work, they bonded right off the bat. Even though they didn’t see each other every day anymore, they still shared special occasions together and spoke often.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the medical team in ICMS at St Boniface Hospital for their tireless care of Tami during her illness. You truly are extraordinary people.

An informal come-and-go to celebrate Tami will take place from 2:00pm – 4:00pm on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Rossmere Country Club, 925 Watt St.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Winnipeg Lost Cat Assistance at WLCADonate@gmail.com to help with the cost of fostering of Tami’s cats until they are adopted.

Tami’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Tami was truly a great friend she is irreplaceable. She was giving, reliable clumsy, spazzy, funny and smart. She was the trivial pursuit champ every time. My Aggrevation partner. I could count on her to come and help me at any time of the day or night. A truly fabulous listener, advice giver.

I'm heartbroken and saddened as I now have a gigantic hole in my life.

I have known Tami since elementary school.

The memories are immense, so many shared moments laughing till we cried, or snorted. 😂.

I will share a moment from about 25 or so yrs ago. We drove down to Grand Forks early spring. I was driving home, Tami in the passenger seat. We passed the border and was marvelling at how great the roads were with no ice.

I got out to pass the car in front of me, and saw a semi coming right at us!. (not realizing I pulled out onto oncoming traffic). I slammed on the brakes and low and behold the only patch of ice in all of Manitoba I found. We Spun a few times screaming the whole time in unison. Ended up in the ditch, the car never flipped just nicely landed pointing in the right direction to drive out of the ditch onto the side Road.

I remember we both looked at each other and said in unison I peed myself. Then realized we didn't our drinks flipped and spilled onto our seats. We laughed till we cried in the ditch of somewhere between Morris and Winnipeg.

I couldn't drive after that was too shaky. Tami drove the rest of the way like a little old lady (yeah hard to believe if you've ever been in a car with Tami 😂) We got to the city and it was snow and ice covered, approached a four way stop and she braked and we slid right through, screaming all over again. We got home safe and a little wet after a very long slow drive.

This is just one of many many memories with my dearest friend. All those Facebook memes we shared about growing old together will never come to fruition 😢. I will forever miss you Taminamini, little Riff. You get to see Bradley, Tommy, Diamond, Kali and Missy again. ❤️Say hi to Big Riff, Mr Riffel, and my Mama ❤️

Tami and I have volunteered on our condo board together for the last 4 years. She cared deeply about our building and all the owners. From the moment we first met, I could tell she was kind, caring and extremely dedicated to the people and things that were most important to her. Through all the trials and tribulations on the board over the years, Tami was a constant source of light and support for me. Together we accomplished many things and it won't be the same without her. I am so grateful I got to know and work with Tami. My deepest condolences to all her family and friends. She was a special person who will be very, very missed.

My deepest sympathy to Rob,Wendy and family. Although Tami and I hadn't seen each other in some time she was always a good friend. She will always be remembered for her caring and kind heart.

My deepest condolences to Tami's whole family. What an immense loss..

This world had nothing to gain by losing Tami. Always helpful. Always kind. Tami helped many people and their cats over the eight years I volunteered with her. Whether she was giving them a ride to their spay or neuter appointment, helping people find their missing cats, reuniting strays with their families or fostering kittens, she treated every one with care and respect because they mattered. A loving cat mom to the end. Her youngest fur kids are in good hands, and will eventually find new, loving homes. It’s Tommy and Bradley’s turn to take care of her now. Best wishes on your new assignment, Tami. Everything will be alright.

I have known Tami for over 20 years, she was one of the first people I was introduced to when I started at MPI.

She was like a fun Auntie to me.

We bonded over animals, cats in particular.

And when Tami had to start using a cane, I insisted on decorating it with stickers. That is my favourite memory.

I will miss you Tami. ❤️

I met Tami years ago when she first started volunteering for my cat spay/neuter program but we quickly became friends. Tami was a great person and a great fellow cat lady. Her loss is immeasurable. She gave so much of her time and her care to helping cats in need but also the people who love them. She volunteered at so many events, working with the public to make them feel comfortable and transported hundreds of cats to/from their appointments at the WHS. Tami was dedicated and passionate. The last time I saw Tami she was dropping off stuffed animals we give out to the kids who visit our office. But not only was Tami devoted to helping cats and their people, she was just a great person to chat with. I have so many memories of working with Tami to help cats but also so many good memories of just the great conversations I had with her, whether or not those conversations were even about cats. Tami's loss is immense and she will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences to her friends and family.
