LAURENT (LARRY) GASTON JOSEPH ROCHON

May 28, 1949 – July 22, 2024

Larry left us peacefully on Monday July 22, surrounded by the love of friends and family who came to say one last goodbye.

Born in Dufrost, Manitoba, Larry spent his early years in the countryside before the family settled on Kitson Street in Saint-Boniface. They quickly became integral members of the Précieux-Sang parish community, where Larry and his siblings attended school.

He began his entrepreneurial journey at just 12 years old, selling newspapers and later delivering watches and jewelry to be repaired for Norwood Jewelers. These early experiences laid the foundation for his successful career in sales, where his ability to connect with others led him to excel in real estate, auto paint, and insurance sales. Larry had a knack for making people feel valued and understood; traits that defined his interactions throughout his life.

In 1968, Larry met the love of his life, and their marriage at Précieux-Sang in 1970 marked the beginning of a deeply fulfilling partnership. Together, they prioritized family above all else, creating cherished memories on family trips and building a dream cottage in Falcon Lake that has brought them so much joy. Larry’s unwavering love for Suzanne was the cornerstone of their life together.

Larry was a devoted family man and a steadfast friend. He delighted in simple pleasures like traveling, family outings to the beach, boating, fishing and playing cards and pool with his friends and brothers. His warm and outgoing personality endeared him to everyone he met. He made everyone laugh. His quick wit, always accompanied by a dad joke, will be missed beyond measure.

Christmas was always a special time for the whole family. He loved the house full, and was a master at surprises and buying the perfect gift, especially for his wife who he adored so much.

Larry’s kindness and joyful spirit were evident in everything he did. Whether lending a helping hand, offering support to those in need, or simply sharing a good cup of coffee and conversation, he made a lasting impact on those around him. His passions for classic cars, music from the 1960s, and treats like black licorice and popcorn were his trademark, and will always remind us of him.

He now joins others in heaven, including his parents, Oscar and Lucille; his sisters, Beatrice and Jacqueline; his brother, Bob; brothers-in-law, Ernie, Ron, and Harold; as well as many close friends.

He is survived by his siblings, Diane, Roger (Flo), Don (Irene), and Fern (Paulette), with whom he remained incredibly close. Larry leaves behind his beloved wife Suzanne (née Savard); and his two daughters, Brigitte and Janelle (Chris). His grandchildren, Kiara, Luc, Grace, Samuelle, and Maxime were his absolute pride and joy.

We will miss him forever.

We wish we had more time.

“Wake up to the sound of music,

Mother Mary comes to me,

speaking words of wisdom,

let it be.”

– Paul McCartney

Many great memories with Larry and the family. Playing cards and yard games. spliting wood at the lake, helping with the cabin renovations. Larry always made me feel like family and extended this to my own family. Enjoy our conversation and the dad jokes and a few cold ones around the fire. You will be missed but never forgotten. Extending my love to the family and many more hugs if needed.

Even after knowing him for over 40 years, he couldn't say my name without making it "French"! It made me smile every time! You were loved by many and will be missed! Sending love to Suzanne, Janelle, Brigette, and the rest of his family!

Yvette Rochon, I am Larry's niece Don Rochon's daughter. My Uncle was a funny man always grinning ear to ear. A character. Larry was youthful, fun and dynamic. He told engaging stories and jokes and he showed up in the regular places. Like St. Vital Mall and our family gatherings and he just had this way of making you feel loved and noticed. He was very positive. Uncle Larry also showed up in an unlikely place and that was the Bible College I attended in the 90s. As a young college student with learning challenges it was alot for me to go live at a College and immerse myself in academics. But he was there to encourage me for whatever reason. I will never forget the wise and profound thing he said that day. After telling him I was surprised that I graduated from High School and made it to college. He said " You can do alot more than you think you can."And that really stayed with me. Now as I reflect on it. What he said impacted me. Today even what he said 27 years ago helps me get through life's difficult challenges as an adult. Uncle Larry will be missed. He will be remembered for his great personality and infectious enthusiasm and zest for life. At the end of his life communication was challenging for him and I prefer to remember him the way he was. The exuberance and warmth he exuded. Bon voyage Larry. It was great to have an uncle as profound and hilarious as you.

Larry wasn't just my brother's father-in-law; he impacted our lives in many different ways. He was always welcoming whenever we visited them in Falcon Lake. I cherished sitting by the fire, listening to him and my brother have great conversations. Larry was also my first realtor, who did an incredible job helping us sell our house in St. B and move to Ste. Agathe, getting us top dollar. Thank you for everything, Larry.

Sharon and I have known Larry and Suzanne for over 50 years and as others have pointed out Larry was a kind, caring, compassionate man who was deeply commited to his family. Reflecting over the past few days has allowed me to go down memory lane and recall moments Larry and I shared over that time. When I was twenty three years old I was teaching, coaching and going to night school so I had no time to look with Sharon for our first house, Enter larry -who sold us our first home and took Sharon all over the city so we could narrow down our choice. I came from a traditional street and never even heard the word side by side. Our side by side at 57 Bramwell was exactly what we needed. Two years old and not in need of any repairs. Larry used the word share many times when he was talking about the house. So we we headed downstairs I asked Larry, " What side of the basement is ours?" Ever the professional - he stopped himself from laughing and simply said, " It is all yours!" We became very good friends and went with Larry/Suzanne and Randee/Gary to Grand Forks a few times. As we all know American beer ranks just above bottled water - no zip at all. Yet Larry would have two of them and have to go for a nap!! Unreal! I could easily write much more but I will end with LARRY AND TOAST. Whenever we went for breakfast, Larry always said "dark" when he gave his order for toast. Often it was not to his liking but he suffered through the lighter toasted stuff. However when we went to a restautant that knew Larry well - the server would bring the toast flaming, blow the flames out in front of Larry and place the toast gently in front of him. Larry would then answer, "Perfect!" Larry is and always will be missed because he made the world a better place! Rest in peace buddy.

To Janelle and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. 15 years ago Larry was our real estate agent for current home. Of course we met him through Janelle during our few years working together. I had seen him a few times over the years when he needed a new appliance. Coincidently I lost my dad just a couple days ago so I can understand your sorry. Hang onto all the memories.....

I've been cooking bacon on the BBQ ever since I saw him do that in Falcon lake.

I always did, and always will, remember I got that from him.

Rest in peace Larry 🙏
