BEVERLEY ROUTLEY
1926 - 2024 - Age 97
It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing on August 2, 2024, of our dear mother Beverley Routley (née Smith). Born on December 10, 1926 in Toronto, ON, Beverley was the eldest of two children (brother Paul Smith) and daughter to Frank Smith and Helen Smith (née Klein).
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband Keith; her brother Paul Smith; his daughter Karen Smith; her parents, Frank and Helen Smith; brother and sister-in-law Iona and Ted Dyment; her daughter Pamela and her husband Mel; and just recently her son-in-law Ryan.
She is survived by her children: daughters, Barb Brako, Marian Peters (Gord); and sons, Mark (Wilma), Brent and Paul Routley; grandchildren, Jennifer (Aidan), Tanis (Sam), Lee Ann (Bryson), Derik, Mackenzie, Jackson (Zack), Ashley (Colton), Tammy (Omri), Jamie (Jimmy), Marvin (Colin) and Alex; great grandchildren, Avery, Luc, Braden, Ella, Cassie and Jace; sister-in-law, Glenna Cook; and former daughters-in-law, Tracy, Nancy and Luana. Mom is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mom was born and raised on Woodbine Avenue in the Beaches area of Toronto. Every spring, her parents moved the family to their home on Centre Island for the summer. Stretching the summers as much as possible, mom had stories of her journey to school in spring and fall, riding her bike to the ferry over to the mainland, hopping on two different street cars to arrive to her school. While mom was growing up in Toronto, she had a passion for playing the piano where she eventually earned her Level 10 in the Royal Conservatory of Music. She also spent many hours at the rink, honing her figure skating skills and was an avid basketball player playing for her high school team. Mom was an excellent student, and attended the University of Toronto, accomplishing her Dental Nursing program. While working at the University of Toronto in the Dentistry Faculty as a Registered Dental Nurse, she met Keith Routley, an aspiring dental student at the time. Mom and Dad had fabulous stories of taking the train from Toronto to Montreal where they had some fun times with friends, and grew closer. Mom and Dad married on February 11, 1950 at the Royal York Hotel, and shortly thereafter Keith finished his Dentistry degree. That same year they moved to Winnipeg, MB, Keith’s hometown, during the 1950 flood.
In Winnipeg, mom was a very active member of the community as part of the Women’s Dental Association, the Catholic Women’s League and a proud member and sponsor of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for over 40 years. Mom and Dad provided a wonderful environment for the six children they raised in their home on Oxford Street in River Heights and spending summers on Clearwater Bay on Lake of the Woods. Being an amazing cook and baker, mom loved to host family and friends, and it was rare to not have a full house of guests especially at the cottage. Mom was very creative and handmade many of the children’s clothing, beautiful ceramic figurines and Christmas trees and Christmas sweaters that would light up and play music! Mom and Dad loved to play bridge, with mom being in a bridge club for over 30 years. Mom and Dad held season tickets to the Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Winnipeg Ballet and Manitoba Theatre Centre. They also held a membership for many years at the Winnipeg Winter Club where they curled, bowled, and enjoyed TGIF with the whole family. They also loved to travel, taking the six kids to Expo ’67, trips to Banff, Jasper, visiting relatives in BC, Alberta and back to Toronto to visit our grandparents. She absolutely loved spending time at the family cottage both in the summer and winter, organizing island picnics, boat tours, ski-dooing and cross-country skiing in the winter. Mom was a wonderful swimmer and was always the first one in the lake in Spring and last one out in Fall.
When Dad retired, Mom and Dad became snowbirds and “Winter Texans” spending 15 years in Weslaco where they enjoyed golfing, playing cards, going to South Padre Island to enjoy the beach, shopping across the border in Progreso, Mexico and organizing many events in their community. At this time Mom and Dad moved from River Heights to Fort Street where Mom became the social coordinator for many events but was especially known for her famous Casino bus trips.
Mom was the best, always there for all six us of kids and our Dad. She lived a full and vibrant life; she will be forever in our hearts.
Mom spent her last few years of life at Tuxedo Villa and we would like to thank all of the amazing staff to ensure her last years were comfortable. A Celebration of Life for Mom will be held at 11:30am on October 3, 2024, at the gravesite Chapel Lawn (Assumption Cemetery), followed by a reception. Please RSVP to Barb Brako if you plan to attend. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to www.aa.org.
Beverley’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Bev was such an amazing aunt. I have so many wonderful memories of going to the cottage as a child. I remember our drive out west after my father passed. She made the trip so memorable during such a difficult time.. I remember all of the good meals she cooked for everyone at the cottage. One meal she taught me as a child was an open faced sandwich cooked under the grill. I still make them today and when I do, I think of her. We always looked forward to her visits to Mississauga on her way to Texas. On several trips she had bought our daughters special dolls from different countries. She made sure to put the dolls' shoes in her purse so they wouldn't get lost. She was always so kind. We went out west in 1986 and we spent sometime at the cottage. I remember her being so warm and welcoming. I really felt a part of the family. We will miss you Bev. You had such an amazing life.

What an amazing lady! There is neither time nor space enough to describe Bev's life and contributions to family and community. When I married her brother in 1957 (after a five year intro to the Smith clan) Bev graciously with love and wisdom guided me through the Smith/Routley organization. When my children suddenly lost their father in 1968, she and Keith acted like surrogate parents--motor trip to the Rockies, weeks at Lake of the Woods cottage, Xmas on Oxford Street (Yes, Karen, there really is a Santa Claus). These are treasured memories. Bev was a perfect hostess combining social skills, conversation and homemade food from her kitchen. Keith was never one to give her much of a heads up when bringing guests for a meal. On one occasion with little notice he brought two of the Church's dignatories home for lunch. Without batting an eye lash, Bev quickly brought out the linen table cloth, the Cross & Olive crystal and the Roiyal Crown Derby china. Campbell's mushroom soup with a sprig of parsley never looked so elegant and tasty as was the kitchen tap water with a slice of lemon. Move over Martha Stewart! Thank you, Bev, for the memories. We love you, miss you but we will remember you always. Rest in peace.

the first time Jackson took me to Canada, we went straight to grandmas place. She had put on a whole spread for us. Bev made me feel apart of the family from the get go and I'll never forget the laughter we shared. the memory of her will live on in our hearts forever. (Her cookies were the best I've ever had)
Rest in peac Bev a.k.a Grandma

Bev was the best mother-in-law one could hope for, and an all around lovely person. She was always kind and gracious, and accepting of everyone. Her energy for planning social events was amazing, and even after she moved to the nursing home she regularly beat me at cribbage. Her family meant a lot to her, and when we visited she was so hospitable, always offering food. She loved her seafood!! It was a privilege to know he. She will be missed.

I was always grateful that Bev played matchmaker for my mother and stepfather. I always enjoyed visits with her, and remember on a boat trip to Fort Saint Charles with the Williams she ate steak tartare. Rest in peace, Bev.

I had a great childhood growing up in Winnipeg and Lake of Woods in the summer thanks to Mom and Dad, Mom was a great support when I was playing in Badminton tournaments and especially her support when I competed in the 1984 Canada Winter Games, even at 62 years old my great upbringing has had a major impact on my life, as an adult we had major philosophical differences but this doesn't mean I didn't appreciate my great childhood, I was very lucky to have such great parents as a child which as stated has had a huge impact on my life. We will meet again Mom

The music that you hear in the video is one of the pieces that we'd hear mom playing in our den on Oxfor Street. She loved playing the classical pieces!!
