Melvin Sabiston
MELVIN EARL SABISTON
February 17, 1948 - May 11, 2020
It is will great sadness that the family of Melvin Earl Sabiston announces his passing. Melvin left this world, at the age of 72 years, on Monday, May 11, 2020, while in the Health Sciences Centre.
Melvin is survived by his daughters Denise Jones (Patrick) (grandsons Logan, Lucas, and Kellan of Flower Mound, Texas) and Crystal Lavallee (Gerald) (grandsons Brandon and Dorian of Winnipeg and the mother of his children, Shirley). He was predeceased by his mother Florence (née Chartrand) and father Walter.
Mel, as he was known by many, was born and raised in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg upon leaving high school and graduated from RRCC as a top-notch machinist, ending his career at MacDon Industries when he retired in 2013. He was proud of the special tools he made for each of his grandsons.
Melvin had a passion for (loud) music, which he passed on to his daughters and grandsons. He spent many hours listening to music and every song he played seemed to have a special meaning for him. Afternoon drives, in his beloved Dodge Avenger, to Lockport or Selkirk, with his case of CDs to listen to, was one of his favourite pastimes.
Along with sharing his love for music and stories about his youth, one could always count on being teased by Mel, with that mischievous twinkle in his eye, calling one by a nickname which he had affectionately assigned. One could also count on being given “The Claw”, which was a staple in the family household as the kids grew up.
In his younger days, he loved to ice skate. He still talked about challenging anyone on the ice. He passed on his skates to his youngest grandson and every winter asked if he had worn them. He also loved sports. He rarely missed a hockey game on tv or a football game unless his favourite team was losing. He always said when the Patriots made the call, he would be ready to hit the field!
A very special thank-you from his daughters to Shirley Sabiston, Marilyn Bousquet, and Clara Roussin for the continued love and support over the years and to the staff at Health Sciences Center for the remarkable care they provided during Mel’s time there.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Mel’s life will be held when it is possible to gather. In the meantime, Mel’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider uploading your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories by using the comment section on this page.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
