MARGARET CLARA SANDERSON

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret on June 2, 2023.

She will be sadly missed and remembered by her husband Reg; step-daughter Laura (Billy); brothers, Kris and Cameron (Jeri); sister Lavina; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Verne (Doreen); sister-in-law Ruth; and brother-in-law Charlie Allan. Margaret was born and raised in |Oak Point Manitoba where her parents Gudmundur (Mundy) and Clara Breckman resided.

There was great excitement in the Breckman farm household on January 24, 1937. Lavina (age 6) and Kris (age 7) were ushered into the kitchen and told to wait for the arrival of a baby. Large quantities of water were being heated on the wood stove. Aunty Margaret, a recent nursing graduate, present to assist with the delivery, was scurrying back and forth from bedroom to kitchen. Then it happened: a vigorous child's scream announced the arrival of a sister, aptly named Margaret after the aunt who helped bring her into the world.

Growing up in Oak Point, Margaret experienced all the joys and challenges of farm life; skating on the community rink or on the rink Dad always made in the back yard, dances, family car rides, sing-songs were some of the highlights. More work-related memories included fetching the cows, and preparing and delivering lunch to workers in the hay-field. Taking music lessons illustrates the difficulty of adding any educational frills, she would travel 15 miles by train to take lessons at Lundar and return by bus later in the day.

After Margaret graduated from Grade 12 at United College, she took a business/administration course at Success Business College. She then worked for Household Finance which at that time was among the largest domestic loans companies, with centres in Canada and the US. After a few years of general office work she became involved in the early development of a computer-based system. At that time Household Finance had a computer that was reported as second in size to the US government computers. Margaret was among 17 staff selected from across Canada to attend a two-week training program in Chicago to learn operating procedures for the new financial records system. Subsequently she became a supervisor as the system was introduced to Household Finance centres in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

After 17 years with Household Finance, she switched to Heritage Homes as a legal secretary which included responsibility for documentation of home sales contracts. Later she was employed by Manitoba Home Builders Association as an Executive Assistant.

Marg and Reg enjoyed many years of cottage life at Lake Malachi, located north of Kenora. Unfortunately, their first cottage, built with painstaking efforts, was destroyed by a forest fire. Not to be deterred they rebuilt even bigger and better on the same site. After retirement they became ‘Snow-Birds’ and spent several months in recreational areas in Mesa, Arizona.

Marg's step-daughter Laura and her husband Billy Yuen became part of the extended family and participated in many family events.

Margaret was a very warm, kind, compassionate person. She was always thinking of others comfort and well-being. She will be remembered for her good humour and thoughtfulness.
