KENNETH ALLAN SAWATZKY

August 5, 1950 - August 28, 2023

We are profoundly saddened to share the passing of Ken Sawatzky on August 28, 2023. He inspired us all as he, in his words, "travelled with his uninvited guest," pancreatic cancer, over the past four and a half years.

He leaves to mourn his life partner Linda; daughter Rebecca (Lon); son Tim (Meaghan); former wife Arlene; step- daughter Jessie (Matt); and step-son Ben (Aidan). He was treasured by all his grandchildren, Colton, Kai, Odin, Brax, Amy, Arlo and Tia. As a ‘Papa/Poppy,’ Ken charmed them with his playfulness and wisdom. He is also survived by his brothers, Walter (Joy) and Ron (Denise), joining his late brother Bob and his parents Frank and Susan in the beyond.

In his final months, Ken adventured across North America with his brothers, connected with treasured friends and shared meaningful memories with family.

For many years as a social worker for the province of Manitoba Ken expressed his gifts of love, compassion and wisdom supporting the hundreds of 'clients' who needed a caring guide on their journey through life.

Ken was a valued friend, walking gently along a shared path. He was clear about what he believed and understood to be true, while sincerely listening and responding to other seekers' perspectives, wonderings and tentative conclusions. On the golf course Ken favored playing ‘best ball’, reducing stress which resulted in a friendly, encouraging, joyful spirit for all.

As an avid cyclist, Ken wanted to finish with these words:

“Life and death are one, even as the forest and trail are one. What is it to die but to lean into the camber of a pine-needled ribbon of track, to experience the rush of adventure and the silence of peace.”

I was lucky enough to have Ken as a mentor and friend at MYS just before he retired. He deserved a long, healthy retirement and it's heartbreaking to hear his life was stolen by cancer. I am so sorry for your loss. Ken was an amazing man.

Ken and I were friends in elementary school and, after a ‘long and winding road’ we reconnected almost 4 years ago. We met monthly ever since, times that enriched my life immeasurably. Ken was courageous, realistic yet never negative, thoughtful and kind. I miss him and cherish his memory. I close with his signature approval 👍
