Rick Scanlon
RICHARD “RICK” EDWARD SCANLON
January 15, 1957 – August 22, 2024
A proud, strong, stubborn, hard loving Irishman, who was a true-blue long-time Bomber season ticket holder, has given up his seat mid-season. He would have never done so willingly, but he had a heart so big, he used up 100 years of loving in 67 years.
Rick attended and played football at Westwood Collegiate, which led to him being a lifetime Bombers fan. He had a nearly 20 year career at Quest Metals before moving to Wpg Transit, where he received multiple safe driver awards, in his 25 years prior to retirement.
Rick was at the Palamino Club 33 years ago when he met his future wife, Sheila - a nurse who was home from Texas. Rick was smitten. They very quickly had a deep, unwavering love that got them through many challenges, one of which was Sheila’s MS diagnosis. Despite what was ahead, Rick never ever considered letting go. They renewed vows for their 10th anniversary in Texas and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this past July.
Rick loved his mom, Beverly and handled her health challenges with love and devotion when she became wheelchair bound in her last 9 years.
Rick became a proud Dad in 1986 when Robyn was born. His goal was to be the best dad in the world - he just always did the right thing! And oh my - she is her father’s daughter in so many ways! She is the stars in his sky and butterfly kisses on his cheeks. When Douglas showed up on the scene, Rick was leery but he lovingly gained a son-in-law in 2009.
Rick had a deep, unconditional love for his grandkids, arriving in 2010 & 2013. Ava joined him in his interest of true crime. Greyson is a skilled sports player and Grandpa loved watching his games and practices. They each had personal connections with their Grandpa and they loved each other to the moon and back.
Rick’s retirement bucket list had one less item after he & Sheila went to London, then joined Danny & Katrina for an Ireland bus tour this past May. A great time was had by all.
Rick was a lover of all animals - even picking up and moving the frogs to safety while cutting grass. He had cats and fish, but Sheila turned him into a dog lover. You can bet he has cookies in his pockets for Keiko, Suzie & Emily when he sees them.
Sadly, he leaves his 2 pups Molly & Cooper, his family & many great friends.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 603 Wellington Cres. If you have, please wear your Bombers attire or green for the Irishman!
Rick’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

My deepest condolences to Sheila and Rick's family. Rick was a neighbour who I met while walking our dogs when we first moved in down the street. He was always lovely and kind and we connected over a love of dogs. We always chatted, when we ran into each other, about our pups, work, kids and family. He was a sweet man who, you could tell, adored his family. I will miss running into him, catching up, and sharing some laughs. My thoughts are with everyone who loved him.

Dearest Rick, your passing was a shock and far too soon. You lived a full and happy life. Although our life together was short and sweet, I will cherish our time together many years ago 💖 Please wrap your arms around our daughter Robyn and around our grandchildren and give them comfort and courage during this very sad time. You have left them with a heart full of love and many great memories. RIP sweet man . You will be very missed but greatly remembered forever 💙

Aah, man. Words. Rick would not be at a loss for words.. First time I met Rick, he had me laughing and chuckling from the "hi, , nice to meet you." Stories! Memories! He always shared the excitement and love he had for his family by sharing the stories and memories of family times. Thank you for the honest laughs, the true joy of life you lived, the willingness to help anyone who needed and the constant reminder that life was to be lived not just walked though.
Fly high, laugh loud, smile wide and keep the beer cold and the seats hot! Put a little sparkle dust in the Bomber's corn flakes for the next 2 games!
- Love and Heart hugs Sheila, Robyn and family as well as all of your friends-family. Sincere sympathy.

Hey buddy, although I did not get to know you till later in our career, I realized what an amazing person you were. You would always go out of your way to help other people out and always welcome people into your home with open arms.
Rick, you were so proud of your family. You would always talk about Sheila and your grandkids as well as your dogs and how they meant the world to you.
We were the three amigos and now unfortunately, we are now the two amigos . You are going to be missed.
Cheers thinking about you. 🍻

Our hearts go out to you Sheila, Robyn, Doug & family. The world lost a great man. Rick was a loving husband, father, grandfather & a good friend. We looked forward to our visits together as there was always something to laugh about & be thankful for. Rick always lit up the room with his smile & his baby blue eyes! Bill & Rick had nicknames for each other. Bill would refer to Rick as " Hey Sailor!" & Rick would respond with " Hey Buttercup!" Rick was truly a selfless man who always put others before himself. We are grateful for the time we had together. He will be sincerely missed.

Bill and I are so happy to have had the honour of calling Rick a friend. Rick's sense of humour was one that kept us on our toes and in stitches. We will miss Rick and all the fun and laughter.
