ELIZABETH ANNE SCHIRMER

(née HORNE)

August 5, 1948 – November 29, 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Schirmer at St. Boniface Hospital.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ivy and Rod Horne; husband Perce (1998); and partner, Brian Grevstad (2020). She will be missed by brother David (Dianne); sister Jennifer (David); and nephews, Allan (Kim), Neil (Claire), Michael (Lindsay), and niece Andrea (Neil); as well as lifelong friends and her Horne and McMurray cousins. She loved her great nieces and nephews, Kate, Alex, John, Julie, Brian, Ariana, Keiran, and Ellie. Her life was enriched by the Grevstad family, and in particular step-granddaughter, Olivia.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Elizabeth taught elementary school for a decade. Through the joy of travel, she met Perce Schirmer while travelling in the UK. They fell in love by writing letters. When they married, Elizabeth moved to Adelaide, Australia, where she lived happily and travelled the world. Once widowed, she returned to Canada in 2000 to renew her life in Winnipeg and spend time with her parents. She was able to again attend the McMurray family Christmas party and the Horne Thanksgiving party at the family cottage in Matlock.

Elizabeth showed remarkable courage throughout her life, taking significant risks for love and adventure. She always gave back to her communities of Adelaide, Australia and Winnipeg. She enjoyed many volunteer opportunities including The Migration Museum in Adelaide, Ronald McDonald House in both Adelaide and Winnipeg, helping newcomers learn English and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 4 at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (525 Wardlaw Avenue). To watch the Celebration of Life, please click here.

Donations in memory of Elizabeth may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Parkinson’s Society of Manitoba.

I knew Elizabeth when she joined FriendshipForce Manitoba and had the great pleasure of travelling with her to 5 different cities in canada to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. She loved to travel and visited many countries. She moved to assisted living a few years ago and made many friends there.. she had Parkinsons but dealt with it very well. She was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

I met Elizabeth shortly after her return from Australia when she joined Friendship Force Manitoba.  It was always a pleasure working with Elizabeth on various committees and on the Board.  In her quiet way she was always available with good advice and patience.  We will all miss her.  Sincere condolences to her family.

Elizabeth was a long time member of Friendship Force Manitoba and served on many committees and in many board positions. Many meetings were held in the common room in her building on Stradbrook. Her energy seemed endless and she was always a valuable mentor to newer members as we learned the ropes. We will miss her.  Denise Lawson, President Friendship Force Manitoba
