SHIRLEY ANN SCHLAG

October 15, 1952 – September 14, 2025

We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved mother, Shirley Ann Schlag, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was predeceased by her parents, Douglas and Doris Brasch; and her brother Gary. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Trent (Jackie), Dana (Cory), and Tracy (Paul); her five grandchildren: Callie, Eric, Ella, Owen, and Hazel; and her siblings: Ray (Cathy), Lois (Ross), Kathy (Ivan), Jim, and Darcy (Erin), along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Shirley was born on October 15, 1952, and raised in Grandview, Manitoba. After graduating high school, she moved to Winnipeg, where she worked at the hospital as a clerk. In October 1972, she met our dad, Clifford, through a mutual friend at the bar where he worked. They were engaged that December and married that following spring, on May 5, 1973, in Grandview.

Together, they raised three children and shared a love for curling, baseball, and bowling. Shirley spent much of her career at CMHC, later taking a buyout and working various jobs to support her family. After divorcing Clifford in 2005, she sold her Winnipeg home and moved to her cherished cottage in Lester Beach, purchased with an inheritance from her parents.

There, she worked in homecare, a role she found deeply fulfilling. She built strong bonds with coworkers and the people she cared for, retiring in the spring of 2020. Shirley took great pride in her home and yard at Lester Beach, never shying away from hard work and always ready to tackle any project.

She had many hobbies, she enjoyed wood carving, rock painting, knitting cozy facecloths, toques, and scarves, as well as working with stained glass. She also loved bowling, dancing, and taking Zumba classes. She loved her daily 5 km walks with friends and neighbours.

Becoming a grandmother brought out a softer, more affectionate side of her— she was a fun-loving, energetic grandma who played wholeheartedly with her grandchildren, creating lasting memories through laughter and love.

Shirley celebrated her 70th birthday in October 2022. The following summer, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She faced her illness with strength and grace, always protecting and putting her children first—right up until her final breath.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Selkirk Cancer Care team for their compassionate care over the past two years, and to the Pine Falls Health Centre staff for their support in her final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 4, 2025, at the Eagles Club No. 3870, 3459 Pembina Hwy, from 1:00–4:00 p.m., with speeches beginning at 2:00 p.m. A light lunch will be served.

Shirley’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Some say that when you pass you are "called home". No one made you feel like you were home the way Shirl did. She gave me a home my first year of uni & took me in. KY58 golden oldies always playing on the radio. Supper on the stove. I still make her pork chop recipe to this day. And I'm still wondering how much booze was in those ice cream pails in the basement deep freeze!? She had a great love of nature & always seemed happiest there. She was so graceful, generous and stoic. She had the best smile and uproarious bust out laughter. She could stop you in your tracks with her mom glance... staring down her nose past her glasses at you like a superpower that made you blab the truth!

My heart goes out to her family who she loved beyond words. She was a hell of a lady and I am glad to have never got on her bad side because I've seen her swing an axe! Country girl to the max... Nitty gritty dirt band playing in the thunderbird.

I'm sure there was a long line of loved ones waiting at the pearly gates to welcome her... and a one eyed malamute howling and dancing with joy, ready to walk the heavens with her. No words can convey just how deep her loss will be felt as a matriarch who felt like home to so many. I know her generosity of spirit, stoicism and cunning wit will live on in her children & grandkids who she loved so so very much. She was already an angel among us and I am so very grateful to have known her. Her Hostas and love for her family were epic. Like every sunset photo she took from the rock beach.

Rest easy Shirl.

So many fond memories that we are left with -- yard work, long walks, diners, laughter. Shirley is already missed greatly.

We will never forget the time the men were playing 500 arguing and cheating loudly on Christmas Day. Shirley walked over to the table, took the cards and threw them in the burning fireplace. It was the only deck of cards in the house. The girls cheered for her actions and there was a lot of sad men.

My sincere condolences to Dana,Trent and Tracy and their families

Also for the Brasch family as they all lost one of Gods best work.

For whatever reason in our family she was referred to as Auntie Shus.

She was always there for anyone who needed her in any way

Will miss you Shus and one day we will meet again 💔🫶🏼

was so sad to hear of Shirley's passing. Growing up I remember my cousin always having Elvis Presley posters in her room. We all loved his music. We will all miss you, Shirley.❤️
