Joanne Schoemaker
JOANNE SCHOEMAKER
April 16, 1958 – October 29, 2020
On October 29th with dignity and resolve, Joanne said her last goodbyes and passed peacefully with Charlie and Annette by her side after battling heart failure for many years.
Joanne will be remembered and missed by her family: husband Charlie, mother Dina, sisters Annette (John), Jackie (William), brothers Willy (Karen), Eddy, nieces and nephews, Nicole (Guillaume), Anthony (Kaity), Erin (Jeff), Kayla, Nathan, Kristen (Shawn), Jennifer, Ashley (David), many great nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Claudia, Cathy (Marc), Cindy (Randy), best friends Linda (Marv), Frances (John) and her newest 4 legged fur baby Jasper. She was ready to join her Dad, other family members and very special buddies Cairo and Duncan.
Joanne was born April 16, 1958 in Winnipeg where she spent her childhood. The priority she placed on family was learned at this early age in a loving household. Big sister Joanne was always looking out for her siblings. There were many happy times with family and friends.
Joanne maintained lifelong friendships with Frances and Linda who she met in her school days. She considered herself blessed to have such good friends still in her life. After high school, Joanne spent a few years living in BC. She loved it there and often dreamed of moving back. She enjoyed opportunities to visit family there for whatever celebrations were happening.
In 1992, she met Charlie and they began their life together. She was quickly welcomed as part of his family.
Joanne had a variety of jobs throughout her life and was a hardworking, dedicated employee. She leaves many friends from her days at New Flyer and LV Control.
A role she loved immensely was being “Auntie Joanne.” She was extremely proud of all of her many nieces, nephews and now their spouses and children. She would light up when sharing any news or pictures of their families, accomplishments or adventures.
Christmas was Joanne’s favourite time of year. Every year, she enjoyed decorating her house and making a beautiful themed table setting for Christmas dinner. Everyone looked forward to her annual picture with Duncan and Santa. She also enjoyed her backyard sanctuary of many beautiful flowers and her special Fairy Garden, where she paid tribute to the people in her life. She enjoyed sharing the significance and meaning of each item with others. Camping at Bird’s Hill Park was another great source of enjoyment; the campsite always nicely decorated with lights and homey accessories.
Thank you to all the medical professionals who helped Joanne along her journey: Dr. Cleghorn, Dr. Singer, all of the staff at St. Boniface Hospital Asper 4 & 5 and the Cardiac Transplant Clinic, with special thanks to Sherry, Drs. Ghorpade, Zieroth, Arora, Strumpher, Sidhu, Barac, Schaffer, Singh and all of the VAD Team health care aides who supported Joanne at home over the last year. She truly appreciated the extraordinary efforts that everyone made on her behalf.
Joanne also had a strong faith and was fortunate to have the support of the Pastoral Care Team at St. Boniface Hospital as her health issues became increasingly untenable. Special thanks to Alana and Tim who visited Joanne regularly.
In this time when we can’t be together, Joanne would want us to believe in angels and fairies; knowing that they are watching over us with love, positivity and hopefulness.
As per Joanne’s wishes, there will be no formal service. The family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. They also encourage the sharing of photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.
Rest in Peace Joanne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
