ADOLPH SCHUREK

October 25, 1930 - June 2, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Adolph Schurek passed away peacefully in the early morning of Thursday, June 2, 2022.

Adolph was born in Hay Lakes, Alberta to Jennie (Maruschak) & Mike Schurek. His father passed away in a farm accident when Adolph was young and he grew up on the family farm in a small one-room farmhouse with his mother and two older brothers, Stanley and Louis.  In his early years, he enjoyed curling, and while his brothers managed the farm, he left home to pursue a high-school education.  His 1948 graduation yearbook stated his ambition was ‘office work’, and at 17, he set off for the city to get further training and find a job. He ultimately lived up to his ambition of finding office work in Marketing & Accounting with Imperial Oil where he established a 38-year long career. Promotions and transfers took him across the prairies, living in Edmonton, Regina, and Winnipeg, and the company vacation program enabled him to be a world-traveller.  He took an early retirement at the age of 56, fulfilling yet another dream and ambition!

Thanks to a blind-date in 1970, he was introduced to Diane Head, a French and maths teacher at River East Collegiate in Winnipeg. They later married in 1972.  They had two daughters, Carolyn (Morrow) and Kristen (Kindrachuk). and he spent the bulk of the 1990s chauffeuring them to their dancing lessons and a variety of activities.

Adolph took great advantage of his early retirement.  He loved to go camping with the family, travel on cruises, learn the latest computer technology, and watch curling, football, and baseball.  He also spent much of his retirement going to writing classes, chronicling his family history and writing his life story.

Adolph was the kind of person that everyone loved to have around.  While he was often the quiet guy in the room, he was always up for joining in social events, conversing over a beer, leading community groups, playing cards, or solving puzzles. He would often surprise you with a crack of humour along the way. Adolph was who you would reach out to if you needed a helping hand.   He was handy by nature and creative in solving problems; if you asked him to help you with anything, he would fix it up flawlessly.

Adolph will be missed dearly by his family and friends, and we are so lucky that he spent so much of his life capturing it for our memories.

A private family internment will be held at St. Vital Cemetery.

My condolences to Diane, Carolyn, Kristen and their families. I have fond memories spending time with Adolph at Head family get togethers. I will always recall his even tempered, good natured persona. He was gentlemanly and bright and it was always fun to play a game of pool with him. May he Rest In Peace. - Don and Sandy Head
