Barry was born in Selkirk MB and grew up there till 1975 when our family moved to Matheson Island MB. Barry was dad’s right-hand man throughout his years at home often going out on expeditions on Lake Winnipeg and the many lighthouses our dad attended as Asst Lighthouse keeper on Lake Winnipeg and Lake Superior. He spent much time with dad on land and water and would share those fascinating stories with us. He had an amazing memory.
Barry enjoyed his wonderful big family and was always available to visit or help in any situation at the drop of a hat. Barry was a chip off the old block, our dad, Charles Settee. He had a wealth of stories he could tell in true story telling fashion, making people laugh and be happy. But he also had such a caring, comforting and wise side. His favorite people were his neecies/nephews/great-neecies/nephews. No matter what age they knew and loved Unk. If he was in a bus stop or seen in the neighborhood, the older ones would stop and pick up Unk and give him a ride. Often taking him home to visit for a few days..
Barry worked at the Selkirk Rolling Mills, Lamb Air in Thompson, Fox Lake Mine in Lynn Lake, did sub-contract work in Vancouver and Calgary, installing steel studs to mention a few. He made many friends with his wit and sense of humour. He spent his last years in the North end of Mountain and Main and thoroughly enjoyed his place and home. He was always happy, laughing and joking, playing games on his computer, talking to his baby girls and helping them along in any way he could. He enjoyed going North to Thompson where he shingled a roof all by himself (became a hero in the in the neighborhood in the process and a funny one too), installed flooring, sat with his pets as much as they were ours. Our homes were his as much as ours because he built so much into them - into us. He cared for us in his own way and our way and for that we will ever be grateful. He loved music and had a special song to share with each of us on Facebook to let us now he was thinking of us.
Barry graduated in 2009 from the Applied Counselling Certificate Program with honours. He continued to present these skills throughout life and his relationships.
Barry was baptized as an adult. He knew there was always someone caring for him and providing amazing miracles towards him. Like the time he was on Lake Winnipeg in front of Matheson Island and the ice was breaking up right behind them as he and a friend raced for land in a vehicle with water gushing in. Barry said he didn’t know what happened next but it was like he was swiped off the car and landed on land. He said he knelt down and kissed the ground and thanked the Lord. He always asked that the song The Maker by Daniel Lanois be played at his funeral.
Celebration of life services will be held at Ethical Death Care - 603 Wellington CR in Winnipeg MB on Monday, August 22, 2022 at 2pm with Helen & Fred Peters officiating. Internment will be at Matheson Island at a later date.
Forever in our hearts.
