ARTHUR W. “ART” SHENDROSKI

May 30, 1947 – January 26, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Arthur Shendroski, at Riverview Health Centre in the early morning of Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the age of 73 years.

Arthur is survived by his wife Edith. His daughter Cathy (Simon), sister Florence (Bruce), brother Donnie (Betty) and his many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.  He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Sophie Shendroski.

Arthur was the oldest of three children raised in Hadashville, MB.  When he was in his twenties, he moved to Winnipeg for a short time before returning to his home of Hadashville after getting married.  In his adult years he split his time working for Sun Gro Horticulture and farming.  His cattle, pigeons, doves, chickens, geese and other assorted animals were a huge part of his life that kept him young. You could often find him puttering around somewhere on the property building a bird house to attract the purple martins, driving his John Deere tractor or quad, going for a dip in the river or one of the local lakes, having a wiener roast with his wife and daughter or visiting with his cousins Garry and Tony.

He was a proud member of the Winnipeg Fancy Pigeon Association.  Arthur could quite often be found visiting one of the pigeon shows, conversing with one of the other enthusiasts like Teddy, Isaak or Jerry or working on an extension for his Pigeon Coops.

Always the type of person not to be knocked down by anything in life he could go for a hip operation one day and wanting to be out and about walking the next day, working on his next project.  Arthur was always there with a story about something (often one of his adventures from when he was a youngster playing hooky, his adventures in the City, or one of his “home-made” jokes.  Arthur loved nothing more than to sit back with an ice cream sandwich in his hand or sit down to a great home cooked meal. He was a very independent person who lived life on his own terms and tried to instill this in those around him especially his daughter.  His heart lay in Hadashville and the surrounding area. His favourite Sunday was a drive around the river and back roads, stopping to look at progress of the local farmer’s crops or cattle, enjoying a treat at the local gas station before heading home to put some meat on the barbecue.

He enjoyed watching Western Movies, his favourite being the Lonesome Dove series of which he watched his VHS copy numerous times.

Cathy and family would also like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Bethesda Hospital, Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre for the great care provided to him in his final days.  Also to Tony Bargenda, Holley Gulenchyn and Teddy Krysko for helping out during this difficult time.  Also, to Tony Mewusch, for being such a good friend over the years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contributions in Arthur’s memory to Health Sciences Centre Foundation or Diabetes Canada.

A remembrance of Arthur's life will be held at a later date for close friends and family once Covid Restrictions allow it.  In the meantime, Arthur's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. They also encourage the sharing of photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

A special thank you to Shane and Anthony of Ethical Death Care, for all your help with the cremation arrangements.  Arthur would have been so impressed!

Condolences to the family and all those who knew and loved Arthur. As a kid growing up in Ste Anne MB (my grandmother and his mother being sisters) we moving to Alberta in 1979 left me with only one real vivid memory of Arthur and it was a great one I still think of from time to time. Walter, Donnie and Arthur pulled into our driveway one day with two brand new Mustang Mach I muscle cars - WOW. One was red and the other yellow and those brothers were like rock stars to me that day. R.I.P. Arthur

Dear Edith ,Cathy, Florence Donnie and Families, our heartfelt thoughts go out to you. Cousin Arthur was always at our house when he was a young man. He would always make us laugh. And he always ate ALL my Mom or Nanny's home-made donuts.  He also made swimming at Aunty Sophie and Uncle Walter's beach ..so much fun.  I will miss visiting with him at my Dad's house.  Arthur , hope you have some luck wrangling up those wild horses ! And also, I hope heaven has the "all you can eat chicken buffet".  Rest in Peace.  Love Cousin Candice Bargenda & Brad, Tristen & Harlee Nazar.

Our condolences to Edith, Cathy and all of Art’s friends.  When Hadashville became our country get-away 15 years ago we soon met Art and learned that our farmhouse was his family homestead.  Art became part of our weekend and summer visits to the farm, with his stories of the area’s history and tips on country living.  When life led us to a retirement location other than our plan for Hadashville, we had a hard time making that decision and a big part of that was our friendship with Arthur.  Thank you for having been such a great neighbour! We had our granary building from Hadashville moved down the number 1 highway to our new property, and we are that much more thankful for having done so, as it will be a great reminder of our time knowing Art, who even drove the distance to wave to us as the building travelled to its new home. You will be missed.

Gone are the days when Arthur would fly to town in his Mustang. After retirement Arthur would visit weekly and tell hilarious stories about the characters he partied and worked with on the railway and at the Bog. We will have a brewski for you Arch. Rest in peace. Cousin Garry

Edith my condolences to you and your family. I met Art at SunGro. He enjoyed giving this union rep a grilling during visits to the workplace. He often brought up issues that benefited co-workers just by them being talked about. Mary Johnson, UFCW retiree
